Wellwood lodge is ideally located for exploring this unique and attractive area of England's Peak district.

Countryside forms the backdrop and far reaching views are from the front windows. A short walk from the house takes you to heather moorlands, woods and wetlands. No car? not a problem with train and buses into the town centre.

Buxton's beauty is a popular choice for weddings, the house is in walking distance of the Palace Hotel, Old Hall Hotel, Devonshire Dome and Pavilion Gardens, all popular reception venues. We have had brides leave from our door for their big day, families delighted to have a venue where they can relax informally together without the constraints of a hotel.

The house is on a hillside with front and enclosed rear garden with a small lawn. For a small fee we allow owners to bring their well behaved dogs to enjoy their holiday too.

Buxton's vibrant and cosmopolitan town centre is just 10 minutes on foot.

I will personally welcome my visitors and endeavor to point you in the direction of essential things to do and see.

As a resident since childhood I am an enthusiast of my beautiful town, the specialist shops within the Cavendish arcade the former spa bathing area, the extensive choice of places to sample the local gastronomic delights, the wonderful Opera house and the stunning Pooles cavern which is rated as England's finest show cavern are just a few of the highlights. The beautifully kept 23 acre Pavilion gardens is a wonderful place for all ages to enjoy a fun filled time.

Location description from owner

The England region

From Buxton the A6 and A515 roads take you quickly and scenically to the pretty towns of Bakewell and Ashbourne, and to Chatsworth, the seat of the Duke and Duchess of Devonshire, and Haddon Hall, a marvelous Elizabethan house. For those with a real love of country houses, you can reach the superb Hardwick Hall near Chesterfield in about an hour. Lovely Kedleston Hall near Derby is also well worth a visit and is reachable in just under an hour. For those with a passion for industrial history, the World Heritage town of Cromford, the birthplace of Britain’s industrial revolution is only a 40 minute drive away.

To the west is Lyme park famed for its filming of Pride and Prejudice, Little Moreton Hall, Tatton Park and Dunham Massey all splendid examples of National Trust properties in East Cheshire.

Peak district country side is ever changing, pretty river valleys give way to high crags and escarpments, beauty in every direction.

Buxton

Built on the River Wye, and overlooked by Axe Edge Moor, Buxton has a history as a spa town due to its geothermal spring which rises at a constant temperature of 28 °C. The spring waters are piped to St Ann's Well on the historic Georgian Crescent where anyone can take the water.

Buxton is the highest market town in England, holding markets on Tuesdays and Saturdays throughout the year.

The beautiful Pavilion Gardens are enjoyed by residents and visitors alike. The combination of walks, lakes, water fowl, play areas and miniature train ensure that they remain a firm favourite with the whole family.

You may also like to consider indulging in spa treatment therapy at the nearby Devonshire Dome within the University buildings. It is one of the most dramatic spaces in Britain and the largest unsupported dome in Europe. Built in 1779 by the 5th Duke of Devonshire, this magnificent grade II* listed building has dominated the Buxton sky line ever since, open to the public at most times to gaze in awe at the internal dome and listen to the acoustics over a cup of coffee perhaps.

indulge in a little retail therapy at the specialist shops within the Cavendish arcade, the former spa bathing area. There is an extensive choice of places to eat to suit all tastes and pockets.

The wonderful Opera house a salute to Frank Matcham's inspiration in 1903 delivers a varied programme of drama, concerts, stand up comedians throughout the year.

Pooles Cavern & Buxton Country Park.

This magnificent natural cavern features spectacular stalactites and crystal formations. Regular guided tours take you through spacious, well lit chambers where you will be introduced to Derbyshires largest stalactite and the unique poached egg stalagmites, it is rated as England's finest show cavern. The surrounding Country Park features woodland trails up to Solomon's temple, stunning 360 degree panoramic views are well worth the climb!

With the gathering fame and quality of its summer festival and the new development surrounding the re-opening of the pump rooms and Crescent these are exciting times for local and visitor alike. Though still a place of enduring elegance and peacefulness, modern Buxton pulses with modern cultural activity.

Buxton makes a great base for a Derbyshire holiday ideally located within half an hour of a large number of attractions for all age groups and interests. Walking costs nothing and this stunning area brings such delight with its very varied scenery within short distances.

“Great weekend for special family party”

Reviewed 5 Oct 2016

We stayed at Wellwood Lodge the last weekend in September for a family celebration, the property is ideally situated for the centre of Buxton, only a ten minute walk to the shops and pavilion gardens. There were 10 adults and 4 children in the group but the house is very spacious, especially the large comfortable lounge that it never felt crowded. The house was very clean and extremely well appointed with a fully equipped kitchen, including bread maker in which the owner had a loaf cooking for our arrival plus two bottles of wine and a bottle of local beer as a welcoming gift. The dining room was ideal with a large square table that easily accommodated 12. The owner made us very welcome and cots and high chairs were provided on request. Plenty of parking for the five cars we used. Would recommend this property to anyone looking for a short stay in Buxton.

Owner's reply: Many thanks for your wonderful review of your Buxton stay, so pleased it met your needs so well. This winter we will be addressing the lounge decor in phase two of our upgrades and hope you will return at some point and recommend to friends. Susan

“Great place to stay for a big family group”

Reviewed 22 Nov 2012

This is a well equipped spacious house. There were 12 of us and we felt that we had plenty of room. Good access to the centre of Buxton and some nice walks from the house without the need to get in a car.

“Loved this place - big kitchen/dining room you can sit and talk in, warm, very comfortable”

Reviewed 12 Oct 2012

Very comfortable house, great for groups or large family - even gives you choice of where to spend the evening - if you want to sit round the table(which is huge) after a meal, - or to retire to the living room -which is also spacious. The area is quiet, slept well.

“Home from home!”

Reviewed 11 Oct 2012

Friendly welcome from owners again this year. This was our second visit to Wellwood Lodge. Wonderful house for peace and quiet but within walking distance of the town centre. Everything you could possibly need for a family get together or entertaining. Good spacious accommodation, clean and tidy, well equipped. Really comfortable beds. Loved the freshly baked bread on arrival. Hope to be back for a third visit next year!

“An ideal holiday home for our large family, well equipped and well maintained.”

Reviewed 22 Aug 2012

Wellwood Lodge had plenty of space to accommodate our large family, we particularly appreciated the fact that all of us could easily fit around the dining table. It was a good location for us to explore the surrounding Peak district and we also felt the location in Buxton was quite good, being only a short stroll into the town. We had absolutely everything we needed during the week - even the weather was quite good! Overall everybody in the family agreed that it had been a good choice of holiday location.

“Perfect celebration venue”

Reviewed 11 Jul 2012

I wanted somewhere to spend my special birthday weekend with friends and Wellwood lodge was recommended to me. I didn't look anywhere else after viewing this place on line and I was right not to as this was absolutely the perfect place. The house was spotless and accommodated the 10 of us (plus toddler) easily. Every bedroom is really well sized with plenty of storage and there's enough space between each to not be disturbing anyone if you're an early riser - or a late bed goer! We catered for ourselves both nights and found the facilities to be outstanding. The kitchen is roomy, well laid out, fantastically well equipped and leads onto the very spacious dining room where we wiled away many an hour! The layout of the table makes it a really sociable area. The huge living area was brilliant and the real centre of the house for our weekend - though you always found someone just chilling in the Conservatory! What I also loved was how 'remote' you felt yet Buxton town centre is literally just a 15/20 minute walk down the road. I had an absolutely fantastic birthday weekend hugely helped by being in such a lovely house that we all immediately felt at home in. (Oh and having a freshly made loaf of bread baking away for you on arrival was a very nice touch!!)

“Lovely accomodation but some awful weather!”

Reviewed 18 Jun 2012

We had a special anniversary to celebrate and we were given a very warm welcome at Wellwood Lodge with the smell of the freshly baked bread to greet us as we entered the property! The accomodation was just right for our family group of 12 - including 5 children. Everywhere was clean and we needed the central heating on because the weather was so poor for quite a percentage of the weekend, but the house was warm. There were plenty of bathrooms and showers. The games room was a useful addition to the activities we had taken in preparation for the rain!! We would certainly recommend this propertyand the owners will do all they can to make your stay a good one.

Owner's reply: Thank you very much for writing with enthusiasm about your special occasion. Yes the weather was awful, such a shame but couldn't be helped, at least the house afforded you lots of space for indoor activities! I hope we can welcome you again in the future.

“Perfect for a family gathering”

Reviewed 30 May 2012

We had a gathering of the family at Wellwood Lodge to celebrate a ruby wedding. The house is perfect for a large group, having large, high ceilinged rooms and plenty of bedrooms and bathrooms to accommodate everybody. The house is well presented and clean and there are plenty of utensils in the kitchen and crockery for a large party. We were lucky with perfect weather but there is always the games room to fill a wet day. The location is superb, with the town a short walk away and pleasant walks from the house to the surrounding countryside.

Owner's reply: Thank you for your splendid review. Pleased we were able to provide the perfect house for your special celebration along with great weather too! There is a a 6ft fence between the houses so neighbours have to go to their upper floors to be peeping toms!

“The house was wonderfully equipped and in an excellent location for a holiday.”

The house was extremely comfortable and well equipped. Our family enjoyed walking and cycling in the area and then returning to the house to share a meal at the end of the day was great.Pleanty to see and do in the area.We thoroughly recommend it.

“A quite outstanding house for a large group”

Reviewed 19 Mar 2012

With space for 12+ to spread out, this is a great place for a group of family &/or friends to stay. Well-located for walking in the Peak District yet just a few minutes walk from the town centre of Buxton with all its amenities. Very comfortable and well-furnished bedrooms, with enough bathrooms and showers for everyone. The kitchen was extremely well-equipped and the big square dining table was just right for twelve. The conservatory and games room were added bonuses.

Owner's reply: Thank you so much for sharing your experience of Wellwood lodge with such enthusiasm, we try our hardest to deliver what our guests seek so it is rewarding when all goes exceedingly well and you are prepared to share the detail with others who are looking to stay in the area.
