The Derbyshire region
From Buxton the A6 and A515 roads take you quickly and scenically to the pretty towns of Bakewell and Ashbourne, and to Chatsworth, the seat of the Duke and Duchess of Devonshire, and Haddon Hall, a marvelous Elizabethan house. For those with a real love of country houses, you can reach the superb Hardwick Hall nr Chesterfield in about an hour.
Lovely Kedleston Hall near Derby is also well worth a visit and is reachable in just under an hour. For those with a passion for industrial history, the World Heritage town of Cromford, the birthplace of Britain’s industrial revolution is only a 40 minute drive away.
Peak district country side is ever changing, pretty river valleys give way to high crags and escarpments, beauty in every direction.
The wonderful Buxton is one of our great historical Spa towns. It is also the highest market town in England. With the gathering fame and quality of its summer festivals and the new development surrounding the re-opening of the pump rooms, these are exciting times for local and visitor alike. Though still a place of enduring elegance and peacefulness, modern Buxton pulses with modern cultural activity.
The Buxton Festival has become one of Britain’s best. Held annually through two weeks in July it draws many famous national and international names from the worlds of literature and music (of the opera, chamber and classical variety). A flourishing fringe runs parallel with the festival proper and is now the biggest in England. It includes a fascinating range of events: music; theatre; poetry; comedy; fine arts and much more.
The Gilbert and Sullivan festival has also won huge acclaim since its inception in 1994 and is now of world importance. It follows the Buxton festival at the end of July and runs into mid-August.
Poole's Cavern & Buxton Country Park. This magnificent natural cavern features spectacular stalactites and crystal formations. Regular guided tours take you through spacious, well lit chambers where you will be introduced to Derbyshire's largest stalactite and the unique 'poached egg' stalagmites. The Country Park features woodland trails to stunning panoramic views.
Buxton makes a great base for a Derbyshire holiday ideally located within half an hour of a large number of attractions for all age groups and interests. Walking costs nothing and this stunning area brings such delight with its very varied scenery within short distances.

"Great place to stay for a big family group"
This is a well equipped spacious house. There were 12 of us and we felt that we had plenty of room. Good access to the centre of Buxton and some nice walks from the house without the need to get in a car.

"Loved this place - big kitchen/dining room you can sit and talk in, warm, very comfortable"
Very comfortable house, great for groups or large family - even gives you choice of where to spend the evening - if you want to sit round the table(which is huge) after a meal, - or to retire to the living room -which is also spacious. The area is quiet, slept well.

"Home from home!"
Friendly welcome from owners again this year. This was our second visit to Wellwood Lodge. Wonderful house for peace and quiet but within walking distance of the town centre. Everything you could possibly need for a family get together or entertaining. Good spacious accommodation, clean and tidy, well equipped. Really comfortable beds. Loved the freshly baked bread on arrival. Hope to be back for a third visit next year!

"An ideal holiday home for our large family, well equipped and well maintained."
Wellwood Lodge had plenty of space to accommodate our large family, we particularly appreciated the fact that all of us could easily fit around the dining table. It was a good location for us to explore the surrounding Peak district and we also felt the location in Buxton was quite good, being only a short stroll into the town. We had absolutely everything we needed during the week - even the weather was quite good! Overall everybody in the family agreed that it had been a good choice of holiday location.

"Perfect celebration venue"
I wanted somewhere to spend my special birthday weekend with friends and Wellwood lodge was recommended to me. I didn't look anywhere else after viewing this place on line and I was right not to as this was absolutely the perfect place. The house was spotless and accommodated the 10 of us (plus toddler) easily. Every bedroom is really well sized with plenty of storage and there's enough space between each to not be disturbing anyone if you're an early riser - or a late bed goer! We catered for ourselves both nights and found the facilities to be outstanding. The kitchen is roomy, well laid out, fantastically well equipped and leads onto the very spacious dining room where we wiled away many an hour! The layout of the table makes it a really sociable area. The huge living area was brilliant and the real centre of the house for our weekend - though you always found someone just chilling in the Conservatory! What I also loved was how 'remote' you felt yet Buxton town centre is literally just a 15/20 minute walk down the road. I had an absolutely fantastic birthday weekend hugely helped by being in such a lovely house that we all immediately felt at home in. (Oh and having a freshly made loaf of bread baking away for you on arrival was a very nice touch!!)

"Lovely accomodation but some awful weather!"
We had a special anniversary to celebrate and we were given a very warm welcome at Wellwood Lodge with the smell of the freshly baked bread to greet us as we entered the property! The accomodation was just right for our family group of 12 - including 5 children. Everywhere was clean and we needed the central heating on because the weather was so poor for quite a percentage of the weekend, but the house was warm. There were plenty of bathrooms and showers. The games room was a useful addition to the activities we had taken in preparation for the rain!! We would certainly recommend this propertyand the owners will do all they can to make your stay a good one.
Thank you very much for writing with enthusiasm about your special occasion. Yes the weather was awful, such a shame but couldn't be helped, at least the house afforded you lots of space for indoor activities! I hope we can welcome you again in the future.

"Perfect for a family gathering"
We had a gathering of the family at Wellwood Lodge to celebrate a ruby wedding. The house is perfect for a large group, having large, high ceilinged rooms and plenty of bedrooms and bathrooms to accommodate everybody. The house is well presented and clean and there are plenty of utensils in the kitchen and crockery for a large party. We were lucky with perfect weather but there is always the games room to fill a wet day. The location is superb, with the town a short walk away and pleasant walks from the house to the surrounding countryside.
Thank you for your splendid review. Pleased we were able to provide the perfect house for your special celebration along with great weather too! There is a a 6ft fence between the houses so neighbours have to go to their upper floors to be peeping toms!

"A quite outstanding house for a large group"
With space for 12+ to spread out, this is a great place for a group of family &/or friends to stay. Well-located for walking in the Peak District yet just a few minutes walk from the town centre of Buxton with all its amenities. Very comfortable and well-furnished bedrooms, with enough bathrooms and showers for everyone. The kitchen was extremely well-equipped and the big square dining table was just right for twelve. The conservatory and games room were added bonuses.
Thank you so much for sharing your experience of Wellwood lodge with such enthusiasm, we try our hardest to deliver what our guests seek so it is rewarding when all goes exceedingly well and you are prepared to share the detail with others who are looking to stay in the area.
