Cottages and log cabins in the Lake District

If you're looking to experience the most magnificent natural scenery England has to offer, you can't go wrong with the Lake District. Book a rural retreat, like a charming cottage or log cabin, to really make the most of your time in this spectacular landscape.

Breathtaking natural beauty

The Lake District's lush fells and valleys are scattered with small villages; charming clusters of cottages in a landscape that hasn't changed in centuries. Why not choose a cosy cottage in one of these quiet rural communities as your base? Or a secluded log cabin to put you right in the heart of the area's natural beauty?

Explore the 16 lakes, meres and tarns scattered across the county and you'll see cottages nestled on the shore with unparalleled views over the water. But if you prefer the atmosphere and amenities of a market town, you're still spoilt for choice with picturesque options like Keswick, Ambleside and Penrith.

Things to do in the Lake District

If you're seeking the classic Lake District experience, head to Lake Windermere. Here, you can take a boat trip on the water while marvelling at the magnificent peaks surrounding you. There are plenty of holiday homes dotted along the shore in pretty spots such as Bowness-on-Windermere.

Nearby Ullswater doesn't disappoint, either, with plenty of pebbled bays along the lakeside to stop for a picnic and skim some stones across the water. While you're there, don't miss the spectacular waterfalls of Aira Force; with ample parking and a variety of walks, it's the perfect place for a family trip.

Speaking of family trips, one of the most popular attractions is The World of Beatrix Potter. This centre celebrates Peter Rabbit author Beatrix Potter and all the work she did to preserve the land and livelihood of the Lake District.

Inspiration

With its inspiring scenery, wealth of activities and relaxed pace of life, the Lake District is a fabulous staycation destination for families. Renting a cottage or log cabin gives you all the flexibility and space of your own home and sets you up perfectly to enjoy England's most picturesque landscape.

Why Cumbria?

Are you up for an outdoor adventure? Booking your holiday rental in Cumbria gives you the chance to make the most out of the rolling hills, stunning scenery and tranquil lakes. Pick yours today before they all go!

About Cumbria

On the northernmost point of England, Cumbria is one of the largest counties in the country. However, you won't find many built up areas here. Most of the landscape has been left untouched by developers and builders, and lets nature flourish within its borders.

With such an abundance of nature and peacefulness, it's no surprise that lots of artists and authors have come here to try their craft. William Wordsworth, John Ruskin, Beatrix Potter and Ken Russell were all inspired by this magnificent area.

What to do

For something a little different, try the Predator Experience in Cartmel. Choose the creature or creatures you want to interact with and spend a day learning about them. There are bird of prey falconry days, reptile and mammal experiences and you can even go walking with wolves!

There are several waterfalls throughout this part of the Lake District, so why not climb up and see one? Aira Force in Penrith is spectacular.

Top Cumbria travel tips

Top Destination reviews

Cartmel Hill, Cartmel
Fabulous house - gorgeous views - everything high quality and in immaculate condition.

We absolutely loved Cartmel Hill. The house literally sits on a hill with stunning views across the countryside. All the rooms are beautifully furnished, this is a house you can really relax in. The garden is beautiful and with the new summer house it is simply perfect for lazing away a sunny day. I can't recommend this holiday home highly enough - the owners have thought of everything. The walk to Cartmel is about 30 minutes and quite a bit of it is single track road but there isn't much traffic to bother you. Make sure you pre book a taxi if you don't fancy the walk back as they are few and far between. see more
Damson Cabin
Amazing accommodation!

These beautiful cabins are ideally located for a trip to the lakes, with Windermere a 20 minute drive where we did paddleboarding. The cabins are definitely family friendly and the owners have thought to include everything from board games, to a bottle of milk and some loo roll. Owners are very accommodating to our extremely late arrival and the area is so peaceful. We had family over to visit and its safe to say we'll all be booking again! see more
The Hayloft Sleeps 7 Luxury Barn Cartmel & Grange over Sands 4 Star Gold Award
Couldn't fault the hayloft

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay in the hayloft. Beautifully presented, well looked after and very homely. Lovely enclosed garden for our dogs and our 18month old daughter. Very spacious for 6 people to stay, lovely comfortable beds and sofas and a lovely travel cot provided at no extra charge. We were pleasently surprised at the little extras provided, tea, coffee, sugar etc, dog bowls, bed & cage which we used during our stay. Only thing was the games we got out to play were broken or had pieces missing so couldn't use them but had plenty to keep us entertained without these anyway. We visited the Lakeland miniature village not far away in Flookburgh which was fantastic! Well worth a visit! And had a lovely walk around the ornimental gardens in grange over sands and fed the ducks one night. We visited the Safari Zoo, and spent a day at Coniston Water one day too. We also spent half a day at Fell Foot Country Park which is absolutely lovely!! And a day at Bowness on Windermere. Really enjoyable family holiday and would recommend the hayloft xx see more
Apartment B
Apartment B, Kendal

We had a fantastic 4 night stay, with 3 adults and 2 boys aged 6 and 9. The apartment had everything we needed (and more, eg the hot tub!) and was extremely clean and well laid out. Location was great, perfect for a game of cricket on Kendal Green before we left, too. Cath was super fast at responding to my questions on email, and we really appreciated the efforts Steve made to keep the hot tub in full working order for us. Can't recommend highly enough. Thanks for a wonderful stay, we hope to return again. see more
Family-sized self-catering accommodation in Orton
Explore the Lakes

We stayed in the old School house Orton as a base to explore the Lakes. Brilliant upside down house with kitchen and living accommodation on first floor as well as one of the 3 bedrooms and a large bathroom. Cosy well equipped house with everything you could need. Dogs welcome which is a bonus. Parking for several cars. Downstairs bathroom and 2 further bedrooms and a further large bathroom all lovely. We felt at home here and found the local village a treat. Not a chore to drive into main Lakes area from the village as it's beautiful and close enough. Highly recommend the house for couples, families and those with dogs. see more
Beautiful Oak Beamed Cottage near Lake Windermere
The Peathouse

This was a lovely, clean, well apppointed, cottage. It was exactly what we hoped for and how it was advertised. A touch out of the way but that’s what we wanted. Good internet connection though for our son who insisted on taking his xbox. I would like to bet that in summer when the weather is better it is a spectacular place. see more
