“What a wonderful place” On behalf of the whole family, six of us, we would like the thank Helen for allowing us the use of her fantastic home and for being so helpful when booking. As a family we have loved Keswick for the last 30 years but in this cul de sac and with the views from the upper lounge we will be back. Keswick and the surrounding area has so much to offer, even our two teenaged granddaughters were pleasantly surprised. The family's highlight of the week was to get within a metre of three red squirrels.

“eighteen years and counting....” We enjoyed our eighteenth stay at Ash Gill, and that should be a good endorsement of itself. We are all keen walkers, and Ash Gill provides superb access to the surrounding fells. The village has two pubs and it is great to stroll to one - in two minutes - for good beer, wines and food, after a rewarding day outside. The house facilities are good, recently updated, and our hosts invariably helpful. How long can we keep going?

“Beautiful cottage in a perfect setting!” My boyfriend and I spent a few days in Bridge cottage just after New Year. We loved our stay there, it is easy walking distance into town whilst being out of the way down a quiet dead end road. The river is right next to the property and as the weather was sadly against us during our stay, we spent a lot of our time just enjoying relaxing in the cottage. The parking allocation is great, right next to the property. There are also many footpaths right on the doorstep which we would love to return to and explore. WE are hoping to visit again (in the summer next time) and explore the area further.

“Another fantastic holiday” Returning for the 3rd time we had the most fantastic 2 weeks at Moss Eccles Tarn. It really is a home from home, so well equipped and comfortable, you just settle in straight away. Lovely location on the site, great for going off for walks, you really don't have to take the car out, there is so much on the door step. Kids and dogs loved it, and we got to unwind. So many things to do nearby, we still haven't exhausted the area, so will definitely be back!! Thank you Susan for all your help with the booking too!

“Amazing stay at Mistletoe Lodge” Fantastic place to stay in the Lake District and this property has it all, it’s modern, clean, tidy, well positioned and the owners made regular contact before the booking to make sure our stay was effortless. The hot tub is the icing on the cake I can’t recommend this lodge enough and I’m not sure you will find a better one on White cross Bay. Thanks for letting us book your lodge and we would certainly consider staying here again

“Great hosts and a great stay” We used the cottage as a base for a festival in the area, and it was a perfect choice. Peaceful spot and the cottage is comfortable and full of character. The couple who run it are great and even came out late to pick us up when we got a little stranded one night! And as an added bonus it's a working farm so there are fresh eggs in the morning! Highly recommend as a base for exploring the area.

“Superb location and accomodation” There was ample space for the family of 5, with all the things you would need for a holiday. Very quiet and peaceful location, which is just what we wanted. We made 3 walks straight from the door. The walk to Hawkshead is mainly off the road with good views of the lake, we made it several times for shopping at the Coop. We especially enjoyed late afternoon and evening games on the terrace. Reversing into the drive is a good test of ones driving skills, you can always park at the park just up the road. The only complaints were from the children, the internet was slow (not the owners fault) and the TVs were "awful"... but who wants internet and TV on holiday :) Would thoroughly recommend to anyone who wants to get away from it all and have peace and quiet.

“Very comfortable bungalow, quiet location, beautiful garden and lovely views” Lothlorien is a very comfortable, well equipped bungalow set in a lovely spacious garden with a summerhouse. It is within 20 mins drive of Lake Windermere, is about 4 miles from Cartmel and is a short walk to the promenade path leading to Grange Over Sands with a variety of interesting shops and cafes. The owners David and Pam were very friendly and could not do enough for us and the information provided in the bungalow about the area was excellent, in our time of renting we have only met the owners on two occasions. The kitchen was equipped with everything we needed as a family and there I made good use of the Summerhouse to disappear for a quiet read. The beds were the most comfortable I've slept in. The bungalow also has a lovely modern spacious bathroom. During our time at Lothlorien we visited the South lakes, Morecambe, Keswick, Derwent Water, Hawkshead, Windermere and Coniston as well as taking the sea road from Ulverston to Barrow on a wet afternoon where we discovered Piel Castle. We also attended Masquepony Festival at Cartmel which my 15 year old daughter found very entertaining. An ideal location for visiting the Lake District in more comfortable surroundings would be difficult to find. For the majority of the holiday the sun shone and the beautiful surrounding were a pleasure to visit. I look forward to coming back to the Lake District and Lothlorien in the future. I have been asked to provide a comment on what could be better - regarding the bungalow there is nothing other than access to a washing line (though my husband says if anything sits still for long enough it gets washed) and just for information only, Grange Over Sands has very little for teenagers, though that was not a problem in the case of my daughter as we travelled out daily. Regarding Holiday Lettings, it was not possible to book the dates I wanted from Monday to Monday - these dates were only offered as 2 short breaks - Monday to Friday and Friday to Monday. With the agreement and help of David and Pam we were accepted for the dates we needed and experienced a lovely holiday.

“An idyllic and beautifully set out large cottage - the perfect place for Christmas” Ings was a stunning place to spend a week with our 3 young children and extended family. With 2 well laid out lounges, a fully functioning well equipped kitchen, huge oven and separate yet attached dining room gave us all the space we needed. High standard of bedrooms, separate utility enabled us to stay on top of all washing/drying and keep wet walking clothing out of the main house. Plenty of parking, cottage up your very own lane! Lovely front garden to play in and perfectly situated for walks around the area. Local pub fantastic food and good walk back to relax! Upstairs lounge provided the perfect haven for Christmas morning and log burner and open fire in lounges provided a very cosy atmosphere. We all loved our week and hope to visit again!

“Great base to explore the Lakes” Longthwaite was perfect for me and a group of friends as a base to go walking & cycling around Borrowdale. As Tim (the owner) says, it doesn't have all the mod cons, but it's full of character, has plenty of room and a fantastic wood burning stove! The location is excellent - very close to the river, walking distance to nearby pubs and you have immediate access to many walking routes without the need to drive. We loved it and will definitely be back for a future visit!

“Wonderful vacation cottage!” What a lovely cottage. The owner was fabulous to work with...from reservations to directions ..she was excellent at communicating with us. The cottage was immaculately clean when we arrived and well furnished. It is located in a nice village and we had no problems finding parking in front of the cottage. The cottage is located on a steep hill and has steep narrow steps so might prevent issues for those with limited mobility or very small children. However, I do have arthritic knees and still found the top floor room and its lovely view worth the climb to sleep up there rather than on the 1st floor. There are no toilets on the ground floor so the stairs are not avoidable. The owner contacted us prior to arrival to ask about gates for the stairs as they can be installed for younger children. I would not hesitate to stay in this cottage again if we return to the area for a holiday.

Holiday boathouse in Ullswater

Ullswater boathouse

1 bedroom • 1 bathroom • sleeps 2

“Breathtaking!” The boathouse really is unique and special! Myself and my partner spent three nights in the boathouse which really was the best trip we have been on. The view from the windows are breathtaking. The binoculars provided made it even better to see the stunning views of the lake. Upon arrival there were rose petals, chocolates and champagne which were a lovely touch. The boathouse is in a great location - 10 minute drive from Penrith where there are superstores and about 40 minutes from Lake Windermere. The boathouse itself is immaculate and is a home away from home. The amenities are outstanding - there is everything in the boathouse you could need. The DVD selection is also very good! Jayne was extremely helpful and friendly and she went above and beyond with the information she provided before the trip. I highly recommend the boathouse - you will be left with the amazing memories that we are!

Cumbria holidays

If you're looking to experience the most magnificent natural scenery England has to offer, you can't go wrong with the Lake District. Book a rural retreat, like a charming cottage or log cabin, to really make the most of your time in this spectacular landscape.

Breathtaking natural beauty

The Lake District's lush fells and valleys are scattered with small villages; charming clusters of cottages in a landscape that hasn't changed in centuries. Why not choose a cosy cottage in one of these quiet rural communities as your base? Or a secluded log cabin to put you right in the heart of the area's natural beauty?

Explore the 16 lakes, meres and tarns scattered across the county and you'll see cottages nestled on the shore with unparalleled views over the water. But if you prefer the atmosphere and amenities of a market town, you're still spoilt for choice with picturesque options like Keswick, Ambleside and Penrith.

Things to do in the Lake District

If you're seeking the classic Lake District experience, head to Lake Windermere. Here, you can take a boat trip on the water while marvelling at the magnificent peaks surrounding you. There are plenty of holiday homes dotted along the shore in pretty spots such as Bowness-on-Windermere.

Nearby Ullswater doesn't disappoint, either, with plenty of pebbled bays along the lakeside to stop for a picnic and skim some stones across the water. While you're there, don't miss the spectacular waterfalls of Aira Force; with ample parking and a variety of walks, it's the perfect place for a family trip.

Speaking of family trips, one of the most popular attractions is The World of Beatrix Potter. This centre celebrates Peter Rabbit author Beatrix Potter and all the work she did to preserve the land and livelihood of the Lake District.

With its inspiring scenery, wealth of activities and relaxed pace of life, the Lake District is a fabulous staycation destination for families. Renting a cottage or log cabin gives you all the flexibility and space of your own home and sets you up perfectly to enjoy England's most picturesque landscape.

Why Cumbria?

Are you up for an outdoor adventure? Booking your holiday rental in Cumbria gives you the chance to make the most out of the rolling hills, stunning scenery and tranquil lakes. Pick yours today before they all go!

About Cumbria

On the northernmost point of England, Cumbria is one of the largest counties in the country. However, you won't find many built up areas here. Most of the landscape has been left untouched by developers and builders, and lets nature flourish within its borders.

With such an abundance of nature and peacefulness, it's no surprise that lots of artists and authors have come here to try their craft. William Wordsworth, John Ruskin, Beatrix Potter and Ken Russell were all inspired by this magnificent area.

What to do

For something a little different, try the Predator Experience in Cartmel. Choose the creature or creatures you want to interact with and spend a day learning about them. There are bird of prey falconry days, reptile and mammal experiences and you can even go walking with wolves!

There are several waterfalls throughout this part of the Lake District, so why not climb up and see one? Aira Force in Penrith is spectacular.

Top Cumbria travel tips

Come to a holiday rental in Cumbria and embrace the great outdoors! You'll never have another trip like it.

Cherry Tree Cottage, Windermere 4 * Visit England
Ideal location

Fantastic, everything spotlessly clean and plenty of room, only 3 of us but with 2 double and two single rooms could easily have been even more value for money if you have a larger family or sharing with friends. Located just about midway between bowness and windimere towns there is ample choice of shops bars restaurants. Property is set over 3 floors with living room and kitchen on the second so probably not best suited if you struggle with stairs. We'll appointed modern kitchen and decent WiFi! Only thing I can think the Property could benefit from would be some outdoor furniture in the garden but otherwise everything we needed.see more

Happy holidays

The house was perfect for us. Love the slow cooker. All the bedrooms are quite large, beds were very comfortable. The only downside was the patio slabs at the front were loose. My daughter nearly lost her balance when she took the dog out in the middle of the night. We all had a great time. I would recommend it to everyone photos from the house looking at the sea.see more

Perfect location with Stunning views

Location was perfect for us as we wanted to explore the surrounding area without having to travel too far out. we did all that and more. The views from the bedroom window was breath-taking. everything is literally on the doorstep (get some good walking shoes) The Beeches is a very attractive full of character homely property with lots of quirkiness and fine attention to detail which we loved. what more can I say clean/close to town/complete with everything/large layout/comfortable, and cant wait to go back because we have so much more to see and do. So happy to have met the owners George and Judy too. very friendly accommodating owners. thank you for a lovely stay.see more
Dog friendly cottage in central Ambleside
Quirky cottage in a great location

We enjoyed our stay at this lovely clean cottage. The welcome pack was greatly appreciated too. Communicate with the owner was excellent. The location is perfect, close walking distance in to the centre and easy to access public transport. It was adequately furnished with everything you need for a stay here. Parking was very tight though, especially if you have two large vehicles parked side by side, it makes it difficult to get things like pushchairs, cases etc in between the parked cars but don’t be put off by this. It is on a main road and therefore you will hear traffic noise but not enough to stop you from getting a good nights sleep. I can highly recommend this quirky cottage and loved it’s perfect location.see more

Tithe Cottage (Wood Farm Self Catering Cottages)
A great stay at a lovely location

We really enjoyed our stay at Tithe Cottage. It's a lovely barn conversion in a wonderfully peaceful rural location, though only 10 minutes from Cockermouth and 20-25 minutes from Keswick by car. There are some good local walks and it's close to Whinlatter Forest (Segway expedition was great!). Anghie and Rolf are lovely hosts and we found the cottage very clean and well equipped with everything we needed. The beds are very comfy and the pictures hardly do the space justice, the bedrooms were large and plenty of room in the lounge and dining room for all six of us to spread out. Dishwasher, washer/dryer and pet-free ticked all our requirements and we would love to come back and stay again.see more
