Why Peak District National Park?

Rolling hills rise into striking fells as you enter the hiker's paradise that is the Peak District. Grab your boots, your rucksack and your camera - you'll need them to capture the full beauty of the UK's original national park. Surrounded by Derbyshire countryside, historic villages and stately homes, you'll find it easy to unwind and forget about the outside world.

Accommodation in rural Derbyshire ranges from idyllic stone cottages hidden in the fells to small town apartments and even a whole village pub. Whether you're going back to basics or want all the home comforts, holiday rentals in the Peak District will provide.

National treasures

On the eastern fringes of the Peak District sits the magnificent Chatsworth House, home to the Cavendish family since 1549. Luckily, the doors to this stately home - the set for Pride & Prejudice and Death Comes to Pemberley - are open to the public. In addition to lavish classical architecture, Chatsworth contains a collection of sculpture and artwork spanning some 4,000 years. The maze in the grounds is always a hit with children unimpressed by Rembrandt.

Stepping further back in time, Haddon Hall, seat of the Duke of Rutland, dates from the 11th century. As at Chatsworth House, filmmakers have scrambled to capitalise on its beauty: alongside numerous period dramas, Haddon became Prince Humperdinck's castle for The Princess Bride. It's a fortified manor rather than a true castle, but it's a great day out by any definition.

Take a hike

The Peak District lies at the southern tip of the Pennine Hills, famed for their outstanding beauty and accessible trails. There's nothing to stop you getting out there and enjoying nature. The ridge walk from Mam Tor to Losehill is a favourite among hikers, taking the highest route through the northern Peak District. There is no better view to be found.

A more gentle, but equally pretty, route takes the explorer through Dovedale National Nature Reserve and along the River Dove (and its infamous stepping stones). There's a small car parking charge, and it's best to arrive early, but it's one of the finest valley walks in the country.

Birch Cottage
Comfy stay, great location!

We stayed in the Birch cottage on Broadhurst Farm. This cottage is 10 minutes from Alton Towers and many other outside visitor hot spots. There were many leaflets recommending where to visit. The cottage was clean and comfortable with everything we needed for our stay. There is a dishwasher, washer/tumble and pegs and line to dry your clothes. We were able to request a baby cot and stair gate at no extra charge which freed up valuable space in the car. The grounds are well kept and secured with gates for peace of mind when the children were out playing on the trampoline and swings. The hosts Linda and Paul assure you to let them know if you need anything at all. They stay in there own house on the farm, you have lots of privacy. They arranged for Hugo the rabbit to visit the children. Other animals that you can see and pet are the gineau pigs and Diesel the pig. We will definitely be returning in the future. We ordered our a food shop to be delivered when we arrived, Tesco had problems finding us so we had to drive to collect which wasn't convenient. Asda were delivering to guests no problem. Recommend Tissington bike hire/trail (15mins away) Dovedale stone and hill climbing (15-20mins away) Poole Cavern (30 mins spectacular drive away) see more
The Mill Wheel
Lovely, lovely accommodation in an ideal position within Bakewell

This was excellent accommodation in terms of its facilities, cleanliness and quality. We wanted for nothing. It has the added benefits of two allocated parking spaces and is right in the heart of Bakewell. It is also not far from other attractions such as Matlock, Black Rocks, National Stone Centre etc etc. The owner responded to questions and made us feel welcome with touches like providing some basic food stuffs. We had our grandson aged 3 with us and it was ideal for him as well. There is a local swimming pool and a well equipped park. We would definitely go back to The Mill Wheel. see more

Beautiful cottage in Peak District

This is one of the nicest cottages I have stayed at ;it was spotlessly clean and comfortable and very cosy . We were greeted with lovely flowers and a freshly made cake and lots of extra touches like bubble bath . It is very good value for money. There are some beautiful walks from the cottage and some nice pubs which are dog friendly . There aren't many shops but a lovely bakery . The owners are helpful and friendly. When I visit this area again I would definitely stay again . ; see more
Two bed character cottage, Sheldon, Near Bakewell in the Peak District
Absolutely charming

This cottage was perfect for our first family holiday with our 7 month old baby and dog. The cottage was bigger than expected and very thoughtfully kitted out. We loved the character and features of the property (and soon got used to ducking in the bedroom). The location is ideal for walking with a choice of short strolls or longer more energetic walks, right from your doorstep. The village is peaceful with a friendly pub and is only 5 minutes drive from Bakewell. All sight seeing was easy found within 5 - 30 minutes drive. We couldn't have found a better place to spend our holiday. see more
