“The place was perfect for our large family gathering, suitable for all ages and tastes.” We wanted to rent somewhere peaceful for a large family celebration, where we would have space to come together yet be quiet if necessary. Grand Augue more than fulfilled our expectations and the group of 30, from 3 continents and ranging in age from 1 - 67 years old, were all very happy. The four houses are interesting and quirky and well equipped, and the grounds large and maintained. We loved the pool, gardens, the games area and being able to eat en masse in the large kitchen or outside. Quieter members found plenty of corners to snuggle up with their book or sketch pad.
Bob, the owner, was delightful to deal with and could not have been more helpful.
The local area provided many small towns and villages to explore by car or bike and we loved the markets, shopping, eating and the vineyard especially.
“Expectations Exceeded” "Expectations Exceeded". These two words pretty much describe our entire week's stay …
> From the booking process through the closing/farewell process!
> From the initial drive up the tree lined driveway to the farewell wave!
There were 12 of us in our group (some couples and some singles) and the chateau provided ample areas for us all to be together, plenty of space for smaller group gatherings and lots of little nooks for some alone time if desired.
Our group really likes food. We like everything about food! So how fortunate were we to be at this chateau in this incredible part of France? The people of this region live off the land and their products at the various open markets reflect their love of and pride in the food and products of their region.
The great kitchens at the chateau were spacious and well laid out and provided some of our best times. I say kitchens because there are 2 kitchens - one in the house and one at the pool/BBQ area. There are also 3 eating areas that easily accommodated the entire group - the dining room right across from the kitchen, the outside patio area just outside the kitchen and the fabulous arbor covered dining area in the pool/BBQ area. Needless to say our meals were fantastic and most of all ... FUN!
I know it sounds like we were totally immersed in "food" … well, maybe we were but we all took enough time to enjoy other wonderful aspects of the chateau: the pool - my personal favorite (I swam almost every day); the stable of bikes; the fruit trees - the plums were delicious; plenty of outside open area for games large and small; and, the Lot River with all it has to offer. Chateau Caillac truly offers something for everyone.
We found the chateau an its grounds to be a true reflection of the pictures on the website - all beautifully kept up. The house itself is clean, comfortable and well appointed, the pool is clean and inviting (even in October!) and the grounds are so well cared for.
I would be remiss if I ended this without giving a nod to Kim, "the housekeeper". Kim was at the chateau to welcome us and continued to be a wonderful resource throughout our stay. She was always just a phone call away. Thanks, Kim.
So, now I will end this review just the way I started … "Expectations Exceeded"
“Beautiful chateau with lots of character. Great group holiday” An extended family stay of 3 generations enjoyed this beautiful chateau in July/August 2013. The house certainly has the WOW factor yet is not stuffy and is bright and airy and perfectly cool in a hot summer.
the kitchen is fully equipped with everything you need and plenty of fridge and storage space. the bedrooms were beautiful and each unique (the photos dont really do it justice) and 6 ensuites were handy though there wasnt always enough hot water for everyone to have a hot shower at end of day by pool. With such a large party (16 of us) it was great to get space and not feel on top of one another. Pool area was beautiful and very sheltered which would be perfect if weather wasn't so hot, as for us we simply used the pool to cool down!
there is now wifi access though due to such large house it only really worked in Kitchen area which was not a problem for us.
The housekeeper came everyday and was very friendly and helpful.
The area itself is lovely and we did a few day trips to Poitier and took a canoe ride in Chinon which was beautiful town and would spend some more time there. There was plenty of literature about the area (& house) though not so much if it in English. Due to us being such a large party we tended to eat in in evenings. The supermarket in the village had everything we needed and the table in the kitchen fits everyone around, as well as outdoor area for bbq.
the grounds are lovely and great to explore, there was a herb garden and fruit trees - cherries were perfectly ripe while we were there.
“Comfortable stay in a quiet yet central place that oozes history” We stayed with a family of 4 for a week at the Vauguyon and thoroughly enjoyed Celian's hospitality in his castle. The place oozes history, with stories about Rabelais, Richelieu etc. Yet facilities have been fully refurbished with a lot of style offering all modern comfort.
Location is perfect. Just a few km from the historic city of Chinon, and many famous Loire castles (Villandry, Langeais, ...) within a half hour drive.
Celian is a great host, providing full privacy in our fully secluded section of the castle, but being available with generous stories and advice when needed. Warmly recommended for families as well as couples looking for a romantic getaway.
