One trip to France is never enough. How do you choose between the culture and romance of Paris, long summers on the Côte d'Azur and the quiet life in rural Normandy? There's nothing for it: you'll have to visit every year.
Holiday villas in France (also known as gites) range from small cottages and converted barns to the expansive stone farmhouses loved by lifestyle magazines. In the more rural parts of France, self-catering is the best option - don't feel too bad if your cooking is overshadowed by the legendary French cuisine! But perhaps you'd prefer the south coast, where French gites take on a Mediterranean style, complete with terracotta roofs and, if you're lucky, private pools. Choosing a French holiday home is an adventure in itself.
Step back in time with a visit to the Medieval city of Carcassonne. Guarded by impenetrable walls and proud towers, you'll half expect to see knights in armour riding out from the city gates. Narrowly escaping demolition in 1849, Carcassonne has been painstakingly restored to glory, and is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
If you prefer your castles crumbling, however, the ruins of Chateau de Queribus cling precariously to mountain where Aude borders Pyrenees-Orientales. You'll need to be fit (and brave!) to make the climb, but the view is unmatched.
Rouen is another magnificent city for history buffs. Located northwest of Paris in Haute-Normandie, Rouen has been the seat of Viking counts, French dukes and even English kings. The imposing Cathedrale Notre-Dame de Rouen should be your first stop. Though it narrowly escaped destruction during World War II, the nave and Saint Romain's tower date from the 12th century. Nearby, the Vieux Rouen is among Europe's most beautiful city centres. In places, the ancient, wood-framed shops lean together so closely you'd think they hold each other up.
The finer things
Release your inner oenologist with tours around France's most famous vineyards. Experts, like Avignon Wine Tours' Francois, offer small groups the chance to engage with France's most famous tradition: winemaking. You'll get the chance to learn about, taste and of course drink the region's favourite tipple at source. If you're more interested in eating than drinking, fromageries like the one at Graindorge will let you in on the secrets of the world's finest cheeses.
