Lying 100 miles off the Scottish mainland, the archipelago of islands known as the Scotland Isles have a rich, Norse heritage and some of the most beautiful beaches in the country. Why not search for your perfect holiday rental in the Shetland Isles today?
About the Shetland Isles
This archipelago of over 100 islands is sparsely populated, with only 15 of the islands inhabited. From the mainland to Unst, Scotland’s northernmost inhabited island with its Viking heritage, Shetland actually lies closer to Scandinavia than Scotland. Even the dialect here has a Scandinavian lilt, and there are reminders of the region’s Viking roots around every corner.
What to Do
Head to Sumburgh Head RSPB Reserve, Shetland’s most easily-accessible seabird colony, where you can see birds such as razorbills and puffins in their natural habitat – you may even spot seals, if you’re lucky!
Because Shetland is closer to the North Pole than anywhere else in the UK, it’s the best place to see the Northern Lights between October and March.
Top Shetland Isles Travel Tips
Come here in January and you might catch the Up Helly Aa Festival, a series of fire festivals held in Lerwick on the last Tuesday in January each year, marking the end of the Yule season.
The stunning Shetland Isles are the perfect destination for a relaxing break – find your perfect holiday rental in the Shetland Isles today.

Beautiful accomadation with everything needed for a relaxing break ,the cottage is only a couple of minutes from the ferry ,mind a budget for £19 every time you want to go back to Shetland mainland .Really cannot fault the cottage in any way and the owners that went out of their way to get a welcoming pack for my wife's birthday . …

*Cosy Traditional Croft House / Scalloway
A really cosy stay in this lovely cottage. We wanted a winter relaxing break, somewhere a little different and it was. We had every type of weather, but unfortunately not the right conditions to see the northern lights. Pamela made us so welcome and the cottage immaculate and just perfect, with stunning views. Perfect location - with great walks and cycling opportunities on the door-step. Beautiful views over the sea and access to a well-known beach a short distance away. Although Coorgrind is set in a quiet location, Lerwick is within easy access. The accommodation itself is lovely with all of your self-catering needs met. Would definitely return and highly recommend. …
Self contained Apartment stunning view
Nice place but I have a few suggestions.....
This wasn’t my first trip to Shetland so I knew what I was getting into. My first suggestion is to tone down the claim of a great view....yes, at the front of the house where you park the view is pretty great but from any of the windows in the apartment or the deck not so much. The view is to the west but there’s a privacy fence around the garden that pretty much restricts the view. When sitting on the deck I could hear the sheep in the fields out there but couldn’t see them.
My biggest complaint was that I was there during the midsummer “Simmer Dim” but there are no shades to darken the bedroom. The white drapes were absolutely no use, any time I woke up it was light in the room so I consequently wasn’t able to sleep well there. I know it could have been better, my first night in Shetland in the Scalloway Hotel was just fine with their drapes.
My other problem was with the induction cooktop....in spite of instructions from Elizabeth I never was able to get it to work so I was never able to cook and eat the eggs she left from her own chickens! Maybe some written/posted instructions should be left for us poor dumb Americans..... There were also no instructions for what to do with our trash so I just left it. And I was very glad I had remembered to bring my own sharp knives as there was not one knife other than a butter knife in the place....cutting bread and cheese would have been quite difficult......... …

Superb accommodation in a lovely part of town
We thoroughly enjoyed using this lovely house for our week long stay in the Shetlands. It was the perfect location for walks, visiting the sea and very quiet at night. The owner really thought of everything, from the clear signing on how things worked, to all mod cons. The living area was large and spacey and the kitchen superbly equipped. Highly recommended. …
Voortrekker - Mogill Apartment
A little piece of paradise
This little studio apartment is set in the most wonderful of locations, with landscape views of the east coast of Shetland and only 10 minutes from the airport.
The apartment itself has all the amenites required for your stay, all you really need to provide for yourself is food. There is good wifi, and there is also good mobile signal (4G on both vodafone and EE). There is readily available parking at the property.
The owners are very welcoming and although i didnt converse with them much, they are on site if you have any issues. I would definitely recommend the property and would of course consider staying here again should i return in the future. …
Really enjoyed the peace and quiet of the island,Magnus is a lovely guy,we were lucky enough to meet his wife who is equally friendly.to stay here you really need to plan ahead, make sure you have plenty of food/drink for extra days incase you can’t leave when planned, you really are in the hands of the weather, towels and bedding tea coffee and cleaning products there but that is all,it’s no trouble taking stuff out there though,Magnus takes you from the boat to the cottage, you park at the little harbour of walls.£5.40 per person per crossing, such a bargain. …
