About Dumfries and Galloway

Lying on the River Nith, Dumfries is known as the ‘Queen of the South’, and the town has had its fair share of famous residents. J.M. Barrie, author of Peter Pan, once lived here, as did the famous Scots poet Robert (Rabbie) Burns, whose former house is now a museum that’s well worth visiting.

What to do

Mountain biking enthusiasts can take to the trails at Mabie 7Stanes, where you’ll find a variety of trails suitable for all levels, from beginners to experienced riders.

In the town centre, Dumfries Museum lets you uncover local history, or catch a show at the Theatre Royal, Scotland’s oldest working theatre, dating back to the late 1700s.

Nutkin Cottage

Lovely quiet cottage on the edge of the Galloway forest. Ideal base to explore Wigtownshire and Kircudbrightshire.Kirroughtree visitor centre is only a few minutes away with miles of forest walks to explore and cycle hire (if you are feeling more energetic!) - great for kids. Only ten minutes drive into Newton Stewart with shops, cafes and pubs. Red squirrel a frequent early morning visitor - well it is Nutkin Cottage! see more
The Carriage
Fantastic

stayed at the carriage for four nights. Our two boys had a fantastic time played outside every day for hours very child friendly and safe. We visited Cocobean and cream of Galloway our highlight was the Aviation museum in Dumfries thoroughly enjoyed. Thank you Eric for your help with the outside oven. Boys are now wanting one for our back garden. The carriage was a great experience and we will be returning hopefully soon. see more
Sandytoes Log Cabin, Barend Holiday Village
Lovely place in lovely place!

The house is lovely. Really comfy with space enough for 2 adults and 4 teenagers, and a dog. We saw badgers outside, and a woodpecker on the bird feeders (a fabulous addition to the balcony, always full of birds, a delight). The pub onsite does good food. The beach is nearby and excellent. We spent most evenings there even when we went elsewhere for a day out. There's plenty to do and see in the area. The only thing missing was a coffee machine/cafetière, so bring your own if, like me, you're a coffee addict. Otherwise, perfect! see more

Good, roomy, dog friendly accomodation, in a small, picturesque village. Friendly, helpful, 'meet & greet' owner on site. Nice local walks, from the house and only 15 minutes drive to the coast at Luce Bay. Stranraer & Port Patrick 25 minutes away. We would stay there again. … see more
Cumstoun Lodge
Mrs

The lodge is in a great location to use as a base and go out exploring. Although the lodge was very cold when we arrived, the whole place warms up quickly once the heaters are on. The lodge is fully equipped with everything you'll need for a self catering holiday. Dalbeattie is a ten minute drive away for any necessary essentials. As we were there for Burns Night, we got some haggis from the butchers in Dalbeattie, and had a traditional burns supper. We did a lovely coastal walk with our Border Collie, from Sandyhills Caravan Park (which is only 500yrds down the road from the entrance to the lodges) to Rockcliffe, which is about 5.5miles, and caught the bus back. Beautiful sea views and a great walk. One of the highlights of staying here is the wildlife. If you take bird seed and nuts for the squirrels, you won't be disappointed. We also saw deer and a badger, and we only stayed three nights. Beautiful part of the world to visit and a great place to stay. see more
