Why Scottish Highlands?

The Scottish Highlands are among Europe's most imposing landscapes. Visitors come expecting crags and lochs, windswept mountains and deep-rooted tradition; that's exactly what they get. Venturing north of Stirling and Dundee, the intrepid traveler won't find another city until Inverness, where the legendary Loch Ness meets the Moray Firth. From there, winding roads and unspoilt vistas carry you to John O'Groats and the steely North Sea.

Highlands holiday cottages come in all shapes and sizes. If you're hoping to get closer to nature, lochside log cabins are an excellent - and economical - option. Or how about a stone cottage near the foot the UK's tallest mountain, Ben Nevis? Unless you're staying in a larger town, self catering in the Scottish Highlands is often the best option - it's unusual to get room service on a mountainside! If you're planning to stay somewhere truly remote, be sure to arrange some basic supplies beforehand.

Weird and wonderful

Without a doubt, Scotland has the UK's strangest wildlife. So strange, in fact, that it has eluded would-be monster hunters for decades. If you want to catch a glimpse of Nessie, perhaps a cruise along the vast Loch Ness, plus a tour of the crumbled Urquhart Castle, will be the ideal day out.

In the Cairngorm mountains to the south, you can walk among Britain's only herd of reindeer. You'll need a good pair of hiking boots, but the opportunity to feed them by hand is as popular with adults as it is with younger visitors.

Into the wild

Those with the stomach for adventure might consider scaling all 1,200m of Ben Nevis to reach the highest point in the country, 1,346m above sea level. You can leave your ice axes at home in summer, but it is a tough hike. Set aside a whole day to do it and savour the view from the summit.

From the highest point to the most northerly: at John O'Groats you can look out to sea from the very tip of mainland Scotland. A few miles west in Gills Bay or Scrabster, you can hop on a boat to the Orkney islands, home to thriving communities of islanders and countless wild birds. There are only a few sailings a day, so plan thoroughly if you don't intend to stay.

Braes Self-catering Studio Apartment, Ullapool
Great little studio apartment with fabulous views and lovely owners

Located on the hill overlooking Loch Broom this has super views of the mountains and the water. The town is walkable although on the return trip it is advisable to turn and admire the view from time to time. We got it down to 25 minutes to the sea front on the way down and 30 on the way back. Comfortable apartment, spacious bathroom and huge bed. Craig and Rosie very helpful and made our stay very enjoyable. see more

Daviot Lodge
Perfect peace and quiet

We loved our stay at Daviot Lodge and were completely relaxed throughout. The lodge was well equipped, homely (especially with the fire on) and comfortable. A bit cold in the mornings but what can we expect in December! It was in a great location to explore the surrounding area and not far from Inverness if we needed a supermarket. It was a wonderful refuge before the Christmas madness and the perfect way to spend my birthday in the peace and quiet of the Highlands. see more

Amazing owners, place & stay

Last minute weekend stay. Less than 24 hours notice and Rhona, the owner warmly welcomed me and my 2 boys, she was so helpful, accomodating & thoughful! The house is very easy to find on the maps. Friendly quiet area & got a sea view! The beach is just 5 minutes walk away. Cannot find any fault in the house, very warm, cozy, clean, spacious, you got everything you need in the kitchen, even an electric blanket! The house could accomodate 8 people! My 2 boys aged 9 & 10 years old, loved the massive attic/ 2nd lounge, watching on the huge (2nd) telly and playing. Having the room for themselves! Inverness is just 20minutes drive away. Loch Ness is just a 40 minute drive, so glad we made the visit/drive on the way back home hoping to see Nessie. Me & my boys loved every minute of our stay here. Will definitely go back next visit to the highlands! I highly recommend the place! Better than a Five Star hotel with warmth and true feeling of being "Home" Thank you so much! see more
