“Cosy Exmoor stay” Had a fantastic time the cottage is the quintessential Exmoor cottage just the most lovely relaxing time. Well equipped and beautifully clean. Lovely evenings spent in front of the fire no tv on just great conversation and a large glass of red. The pub The Black Venus in the village serves excellent home cooked country style food. Probably lovely in the summer but for me to hunker down in the winter is just fab.

“Boomerang visits” How many times can I say what a great little place this is? We've been back here on numerous occasions and at different times of year and the place never disappoints. The pluses for us are; no mobile coverage (but superfast broadband in the cottage area), no traffic (even at peak times), no noisey neighbours (on-site kids playground at the top of the hill), no dogs left howling in the cottages whilst owners walk to the excellent gastro-pub 2 mins away, tasty "home cooked" take-aways from the village shop 2 mins away and countless footpaths to wander the local countryside on. Be mindful that "footpaths" do NOT mean tarmac pavements and that country lanes (without pavements) can be winding (hairpin bends) and steep at times. That's why there are some fantastic views from the road as you drive along the A39. What traffic you do meet tends not to be pushy or inconsiderate. Be prepared for a slower pace of life when you get here and for exceptionally friendly natives.

“Excellent Holiday Home” I stayed in Inglenook for a 5day stay. Lovely period cottage. Log burning stove was a bonus, kept us snuggly warm. Everything we needed for a peaceful escape. Beds are super comfortable. The surrounding area is full of wildlife which is enchanting. I would not hesitate to recommend Inglenook to all my friends. The owners are very friendly and helpful. Nothing is too much trouble.

-Re-review: Home from home

We never go anywhere twice if we don't like everything about the place we stay, (we can be very picky) but we have returned here for a number of years now. Challacombe is a great little village, with friendly people, quiet lanes, a Post Office (that does home-made take-aways on Tuesdays: we had a lovely roast chicken dinner but the previous week was pork in cider) and a pub with great food. I was far too relaxed to cook every night and could just about manage the 3 minute walk; though with so much to look at it usually took 10 . You can tell it's a safe place for dogs and children because the ducks from the stream were laying their eggs in the road and soft verges. These charming lanes come with an abundance of wildflowers rather than white lines and if you like walking you'll love the footpaths that lead off the lanes and all within a 2 minute walk from the cottage door. We still haven't got round to all of them! The cottage itself is roomy and well-equipped.Being out in the National Park the cottages have a septic tank but that doesn't cause any issues unless you're daft enough to flush baby wipes down the loo and bung up the pipes, which only causes a back-up and a pong in the cottage where it was done. There are no phones in the cottages and a mobile signal is a bit hit-and-miss but you can always log on to the wi-fi and make the folks you left behind jealous, like we did. The wi-fi isn't fast enough for streaming but who has time for that anyway? We also found it so much better to wake up to the sounds of birds than the noise of traffic. (Rush hour in the village consists of a car and a quad-bike at around 7.30am & again at 4.30pm as far as we could tell. Each cottage here has it's own garden but they all vary in size. The Gatehouse garden is like the Secret Garden. It's not manicured into a green desert and devoid of life. There is no lawn, the plants are exuberant and so is the wildlife. In half an hour we counted 12 different species of birds, a couple of (now rare) hedgehogs and loads of butterflies. There are two other areas in the grounds to loll about in. On the flat, and across the car-park, is a wildlife area. Obviously this is "managed wild" and there is a largish pond so children and dogs should be supervised. It might get a bit squishy underfoot sometimes too so not somewhere to wear your Jimmy Choos. The other area is up the hill. Kids and dogs love running through the long grass to the play frame whilst I prefer to use the mown paths to sneak a peek over the wall at the Alpacas in the adjoining field. If you and your children would like something a little more exotic the Exmoor Zoo is just a ten minute drive up the road; where you can get really close to all the exhibits and their keepers. If you like to relax on holiday, connect with nature, recharge your batteries and see the night sky covered in twinkling stars, this is the place to come. If you just want to move your life to a different location for a while, go somewhere else.see more

Ideal base for a walking holiday

Stayed here for a family walking holiday. The farmhouse is spacious and comfortable, the kitchen is well equipped. The owners met us on arrival and were very informative about the area. The Black Venus, just up the road, is friendly and serves good food and beer. Next time we're visiting the area, this is where we'll stay.see more

Idyllic cottage full of character nestled in charming Challacombe, Exmoor

Challacombe is a small and quaint village nestled in the hills of Exmoor. Inglenook cottage is a couple of hundred yards off the main road, near a stream and surrounded by natural beauty. I booked Inglenook cottage on recommendation and as I was part of a small group of motorcyclists, I was keen to rent a cottage which had space to securely accomodate the motorcycles and also be very comfortable for four weary riders! On our trip down to the cottage, I left a message to inform the owners we would be arriving late and the keys were left in a safe place for us. When we arrived at the cottage, the fire was lit and there was a welcome pack with all the information about the cottage and the local area, as well as tea, coffee, milk and sugar. The cottage was spotlessly clean and well stocked with cutlery, crockery etc and even had plenty of washing detergents which was an unexpected bonus. The bedrooms and bathroom were spotlessly clean and the beds were comfortable and all very warm, so much so I had to open my window. There is lots to see and do in the area but as my friends and I were on a motorcycling adventure, we ventured further afield visiting many places rather than staying close to the cottage. Melanie came to see us in the morning of our first day and I have to say how delightfully welcoming and helpful she was and gave us so much information on places she thought may be worth visiting including the local area, including the local (Black Venus) where the food is delicious. We were told not to hesitate in contacting her if there were any issues or we needed any information. All in all, a pleasurable and memorable stay and my biker mates have said they would definitely go back and stay at Inglenook Cottage. I can't rate it highly enough.see more

Pleasant cottage in a lovely location.

We had a very pleasant stay in Garden Cottage. It is well equipped and comfortable. It was good to have fast internet access, there really was no phone signal! Melanie was very attentive, quickly producing replacements for 2 lightbulbs that failed. We enjoyed the peace and tranquillity, the only traffic we ever heard was an occasional tractor, usually with a sheepdog on the back. We were fascinated watching the birds on the feeders outside the garden door. We had two enjoyable meals in the Black Venus. It was essential to book in advance. This was true of most things. On the days we couldn’t book a restaurant, we ate in, one BBQ, one curry. The weather wasn’t particularly good considering it was mid-August, so we didn’t do much local walking. We did explore some of North Devon – RHS Rosemoor garden at Great Torrington was very impressive, and we did a pleasant 3 mile walk in the grounds of Arlington Court (NT). Both needed to be booked in advance. We also visited Watersmeet, a very impressive place. The walk down from the carpark and back is a bit strenuous, but well worth it. Woolacombe on Sunday in pleasant weather was ram packed, but the locals said it was less busy than some days! We walked from Tarr Steps upstream to the footbridge and back, really beautiful. We parked at Lynton, took the Cliff Railway down to Lynmouth, but when we saw the size of the queues to go back up we walked! We visited Clovelly, which was not that impressive. Yes, a lovely setting, but lots of people, and the walk down and back up is a bit taxing. Covid-19 social distancing: a bit mixed. Some people were very good, others didn’t seem bothered. The pubs were very well organised. All in all we enjoyed ourselves, but it would have been good to have had better weather.see more

Wisteria Cottage - Quiet, Cosy, Comfortable, Just What We Needed

We and our dog have just returned from a very pleasant, relaxing week at Wisteria cottage. The cottage is in a quiet area and is cosy, comfortable and remarkable well equipped; a regular home from home, with great wi-fi. There are lots of lovely local walks and the Black Venus, a very short walk away, provided us with some extremely tasty meals. Melanie and John were remarkably willing and helpful and their local knowledge guided us to some lovely interesting places and dog walks. We look forward to visiting again and happily recommend Wisteria for a “get away from it all” holiday. Eira & Davidsee more
