Relax at Exmoor Cottage Holidays, in front of the multi-fuel stove, or dine al fresco on the decking outside this charming cottage which is ideal for families, couples and pets. The Gatehouse is in a peaceful village location and is warm and comfortable with character features, private enclosed patio, large children's play area and just five minutes walk from a shop and pub.
The Gatehouse (part of "Town Tenement Farm") is cosy and snug, having recently been renovated with a modern kitchen and bathroom and insulated walls. There is a large living room with exposed beams, a multi-fuel stove, comfortable seating, Freeview TV and a dining area with dining table and chairs. There are French doors to a lovely private enclosed garden with large decked area and picnic table.
The fully-equipped kitchen has an electric oven & hob, fridge (freezer box), microwave and dishwasher. Upstairs are two bedrooms, a double bedroom and a triple (with a single bed and large bunks) and a bathroom with a bath (shower over), hand-basin & WC.
No-one can get bored at the Gatehouse. If the WiFi and 100 or so Freeview TV channels aren't enough there are many books, games & DVD's, and three acres of grounds to explore (with wild-flower meadow, wildlife pond, and large children's play area with two towers, bridge, swing, slide, climbing board & net, fireman's pole, etc). Watch the birds in the courtyard, or enjoy a family picnic in the grounds which has lovely views of Exmoor.
A cot, high chair, fire guard and stair gate are available free of charge, and towel sets available for hire (£5 per set comprising bath towel and hand towel). Dogs are very welcome (£18 per stay for each dog) and there is a lovely walk through the grounds where they can run off-lead. Hand-soap, cleaning materials and tea towels are provided, and a welcome pack with many essentials (until you can get to a shop) including a basket of logs & kindling, tea, coffee, sugar, fresh milk, bin bag, toilet paper, shampoo, conditioner & matches.
The Gatehouse is in the quiet and peaceful village of Challacombe and within the Exmoor National Park. Within 300 yards is an excellent pub with award-winning food and real ales, and a handy general shop and Post Office with delicious home-made cakes. Challacombe has excellent local walks and is an ideal central location from which to explore Exmoor, the sandy beaches of Woolacombe and Croyde, and the spectacular coastline of North Devon & Somerset.
The Gatehouse is one of five holiday cottages (known as "Exmoor Cottage Holidays") converted from a former farm. The cottages form a 'U' shape around a charming courtyard and each has a log burning stove and a private enclosed garden. The other four cottages (sleeping 1-6 people) are also available, look under "Challacombe". The owners, John & Melanie Moore, like to greet all customers personally and are available at the cottages most days to feed the birds and help you plan your day.

“-Re-review: Home from home”
We never go anywhere twice if we don't like everything about the place we stay, (we can be very picky) but we have returned here for a number of years now. Challacombe is a great little village, with friendly people, quiet lanes, a Post Office (that does home-made take-aways on Tuesdays: we had a lovely roast chicken dinner but the previous week was pork in cider) and a pub with great food. I was far too relaxed to cook every night and could just about manage the 3 minute walk; though with so much to look at it usually took 10 . You can tell it's a safe place for dogs and children because the ducks from the stream were laying their eggs in the road and soft verges. These charming lanes come with an abundance of wildflowers rather than white lines and if you like walking you'll love the footpaths that lead off the lanes and all within a 2 minute walk from the cottage door. We still haven't got round to all of them! The cottage itself is roomy and well-equipped.Being out in the National Park the cottages have a septic tank but that doesn't cause any issues unless you're daft enough to flush baby wipes down the loo and bung up the pipes, which only causes a back-up and a pong in the cottage where it was done. There are no phones in the cottages and a mobile signal is a bit hit-and-miss but you can always log on to the wi-fi and make the folks you left behind jealous, like we did. The wi-fi isn't fast enough for streaming but who has time for that anyway? We also found it so much better to wake up to the sounds of birds than the noise of traffic. (Rush hour in the village consists of a car and a quad-bike at around 7.30am & again at 4.30pm as far as we could tell. Each cottage here has it's own garden but they all vary in size. The Gatehouse garden is like the Secret Garden. It's not manicured into a green desert and devoid of life. There is no lawn, the plants are exuberant and so is the wildlife. In half an hour we counted 12 different species of birds, a couple of (now rare) hedgehogs and loads of butterflies. There are two other areas in the grounds to loll about in. On the flat, and across the car-park, is a wildlife area. Obviously this is "managed wild" and there is a largish pond so children and dogs should be supervised. It might get a bit squishy underfoot sometimes too so not somewhere to wear your Jimmy Choos. The other area is up the hill. Kids and dogs love running through the long grass to the play frame whilst I prefer to use the mown paths to sneak a peek over the wall at the Alpacas in the adjoining field. If you and your children would like something a little more exotic the Exmoor Zoo is just a ten minute drive up the road; where you can get really close to all the exhibits and their keepers. If you like to relax on holiday, connect with nature, recharge your batteries and see the night sky covered in twinkling stars, this is the place to come. If you just want to move your life to a different location for a while, go somewhere else.

“Perfect Holiday Retreat”
Exmoor Cottage Holidays is a true gem of a place, from it's stunning surroundings to its cozy comfy cottages. We have stayed on several occasions now and have never been disappointed. John & Melanie's (the owners) knowledge of the area and advice makes staying here extra special. The cottages are very well equipped and spotless. A truly perfect setting for those who seek comfort and restful vacations and the activity seeking vacations. One big added bonus for us is that pets are allowed. Thank you once again for a perfect get away see you next year !

“Great place to stay”
A wonderful cottage, the owners Melanie and John have obviously spent time to think what people want when they come away - spotlessly clean, well equipped, welcoming and cosy. They are hands on owners who care about their guests and about their property. The wood burner is a plus, with wood provided and the recycling shed is very impressive. Dogs are welcomed which is a real bonus. The pub is excellent and is within walking distance in the village which also boasts a good shop. A beautiful area and what better way to see it ........ We would highly recommend this gem and certainly hope to return.

“Peaceful respite in a lovely valley”
Stayed at the gatehouse in February , when most of the country and Devon was flooded..! Lovelŷ welcoming clean cottage . And our 2 dogs loved lying in front of the fire. Cottage is well equipped , very clean, .local pub up the road and another one at Parracombe , which we preferred. Had some some lovely walks , watched the sheep out of the longue window, listened to the birds tweeting, had all the seasons of snow, rain and sun. wonderful.... Owners supply wood for the fire so easy to put on. Will be returning , esp as we only live in East Devon, so not far to travel...
