Description from owner
Step back in time and relax beside the kitchen Rayburn or the huge inglenook fireplace in this charming C16th Farmhouse at Exmoor Cottage Holidays, ideal for families and pets. The comfortable Farmhouse has a peaceful village location and offers spacious accommodation, character features, enclosed gardens front & rear, a large children's playground and is just five minutes walk from a shop & pub.
The Farmhouse (known as "Town Tenement Farm") has the special atmosphere of a building that has been lived in for a long time, but with double-glazing and all modern comforts. There is plenty of space downstairs with a separate dining room, kitchen, sitting room and laundry room/WC. The large sitting room has an impressive stone inglenook fireplace (with bread oven & smoker) and multi-fuel stove, comfortable leather seating & Freeview TV. The panelled dining room has a lovely oak dining table perfect for family dinners, and a sofa and a second Freeview TV (so no arguments over what to watch!).
The Farmhouse kitchen is very well equipped with an electric oven & hob, microwave, fridge, freezer, dishwasher, and the added luxury of a traditional Rayburn cooker. There is a stable door to a lovely private enclosed garden with a picnic table and BBQ, ideal for al fresco dining. There is also a large utility room with washing machine, tumble dryer, iron & ironing board and downstairs WC. Upstairs are three bedrooms; a double, a twin, and a king-sized (or twin utilising a ziplink bed); and a bathroom and separate shower room, both with WC's.
No-one can get bored at the Farmhouse. If the free WiFi and nearly 100 Freeview TV channels aren't enough there are many books, games & DVD's, and three acres of grounds to explore (with wild-flower meadow, wildlife pond, and large children's play area with two towers, bridge, swing, slide, climbing board & net, fireman's pole, etc). Watch the birds in the front garden under the magnificent Wisteria, or enjoy a family picnic in the grounds which has lovely views of Exmoor.
A cot, high chair, fire guard and stair gate are available free of charge, and towel sets are available for hire (£5 per set of bath towel and hand towel). Dogs are very welcome (£18 per stay for each dog) and there is a lovely walk through the grounds where they can run off-lead. Hand-soap, cleaning materials and tea towels are provided, and a welcome pack with many essentials (until you can get to a shop) including a basket of logs & kindling, tea, coffee, sugar, fresh milk, bin bag, toilet paper, shampoo, conditioner & matches.
The Farmhouse is in the quiet and peaceful village of Challacombe and within the Exmoor National Park. Within 300 yards is an excellent pub with award-winning food and real ales, and a handy general shop and Post Office with delicious home-made cakes. Challacombe has excellent local walks and in an ideal central location from which to explore Exmoor, the sandy beaches of Woolacombe and Croyde, and the spectacular coastline of North Devon & Somerset.
The Farmhouse is one of five holiday cottages (known as "Exmoor Cottage Holidays") converted from a former farm. The cottages form a 'U' shape around a charming courtyard and each has a log burning stove and a private enclosed garden. The other four cottages (sleeping 1-5 people) are all available separately, please look under "Challacombe". The owners, John & Melanie Moore, like to greet all customers personally and are available at the cottages most days to feed the birds and help you plan your day.

- Very Good
We stayed 21st-28th October 2017, & what a fabulous holiday we had. The accommodation was everything we could have wished for. The owners were very welcoming & helpful with recommendations of places to visit & eat. Can't wait for our next stay, we would certainly recommend this accommodation to anyone wanting to explore the beauty of exmoor.
Owner's reply: Thank you so much for your lovely review. We are always happy to recommend things to see and do - we are glad that you found this helpful and that you enjoyed your stay. We look forward to seeing you again soon at Exmoor Cottage Holidays
“Cosy Exmoor stay”
Had a fantastic time the cottage is the quintessential Exmoor cottage just the most lovely relaxing time. Well equipped and beautifully clean. Lovely evenings spent in front of the fire no tv on just great conversation and a large glass of red. The pub The Black Venus in the village serves excellent home cooked country style food. Probably lovely in the summer but for me to hunker down in the winter is just fab.
Owner's reply: Thank you for your lovely review. Winter on Exmoor is stunning...as you say, switch off the TV and relax in front of the fire - bliss. We are glad that you enjoyed your stay in out traditional Farmhouse and look forward to welcoming you back again very soon.
“Blissful tranquility in a hideaway farmhouse”
What a treat, to stay in a traditional farmhouse in a stunning location. "Farmhouse" is everything you could want for a cosy getaway in the winter before the Christmas stress. Warm and inviting, the lounge has an open fireplace and wonderful sofas, the kitchen has a range as well as mod cons, the dining room has a great long table for lots of people to sit around, the beds are sooo comfy and the gardens are tranquil places to get back in touch with nature. The pub up the road serves delicious food, so if you don't fancy cooking you don't have to. Owners Melanie and John are delightful and go out of their way to ensure that you want for nothing during your stay. I can't recommend it highly enough and will definitely go back, as well as telling all my friends about it.
Owner's reply: Thank you so much for your great review. We are glad that you enjoyed your getaway in our Farmhouse. We are very lucky to have great gardens and a brill pub just a short walk away. We very much look forward to welcoming you again soon.
“Feels like a "Second Home"”
Have just returned from an excellent 10 day stay in The Farmhouse. We usually stay in the adjoining Inglenook Cottage which is a delightful and spacious cottage in its own right. However, this time we needed even more space as family members were joining us during the stay. The Farmhouse offers excellent and generous accommodation for a group of upto 6 people including 2 bathrooms, and, most importantly....3 loos!! Yet it still manages to feel cosy, warm and comfy. The kitchen is well equipped and we had several family meals eating in. We also took ourselves the 200 yards to The Black Venus pub on more than one occasion! It offers beautifully cooked food and excellent wine and beers. We have booked a stay for Christmas and New Year - when we will be back in Inglenook Cottage as it will be just the two of us plus our little dog. See you soon John and Melanie!
Owner's reply: Thank you for your brilliant review! We are so happy that you were comfortable in our Farmhouse - it is great for family get-togethers. The big kitchen and spacious dining room are lovely for family dining - we are glad you enjoyed your time here. We very much look forward to welcoming you back at Christmas / New Year. Best wishes Melanie and John
“Beautiful and relaxing”
We came for a wedding and the cottage helped us relax, there are fantastic walks and Humphrey Hill is just behind the cottage so that was wonderful for our 2 dogs.Melanie was very welcoming and friendly, would definitely go again.
Owner's reply: Thank you for your kind review. We are really glad you had a good wedding and enjoyed the local walks. We look forward to welcoming you again.
“Home from home”
We stayed in the farmhouse ,which was a little big for 2 was extremely comfortable ,with everything you could possibly need and a little bit more ,it was quiet and beautiful with extensive gardens all around .when you arrive you enter to a warm kitchen heated by an arga which our 2 dogs did not leave after long walks in ex moor .Callacombe is perfectly placed to explore all of ex moor we did some of the best walks we have ever done .At the end of an exhausting day you can go to the local pub the Black Venus which is 2 minutes walk away does some of the best pub food We have ever eaten especially the fish dishes ,also dogs made to feel very welcome . A wonderful weekend had by all many thanks especially from Kiara and Bertie
Owner's reply: Thank you for your great review. We are glad that you had a comfortable stay (and your dogs too - in front of the range in the kitchen is a great place for a doggy snooze). The walks on Exmoor are spectacular and having an excellent pub just a short stroll away is a bonus. We look forward to welcoming you back soon.
