“Perfect, Cosy & Unique .... A Home From Home” This is a wonderful cottage with all of the amenities you could need. Within walking distance of Ambleside with plenty of walks on the doorstep.
As soon as you enter The Mounting Steps you feel like you're at home. The fact that it is an "upside down" house makes it even more special.
If you're looking for a romantic breakaway in a quiet area but that is close enough to all that Ambleside has to offer, look no further.
The special touches of a bottle of wine & chocolates left by the owner are just the cherry on the cake!
This was our second stay at the cottage & we have already booked to stay again next year...thanks very much to Maggie & Greg for sharing their wonderful property.
“Perfect Lakes location” Above Stock is convenient, clean and comfortable. This was our third stay and we will be seeking to book again. The flat is very nicely furnished and very well situtaed in the centre of the lovely Lakeland town of Ambleside. The new bathroom is beautifully finished, the bedrooms are warm and spacious and the kitchen has all you require if you want to make your stay completely self catering.
“Wythburn apartment” Lovely welcome from mike and David, excelled themselves as hosts and davids advice on where to visit was excellent. Apartment was very homely with everything you needed and more. Nothing was a problem to ask for and the personal touches amazing, would go back there due to how we were welcomed and treat. Beautiful place lovely owners
“Cosy, very comfortable, well equipped accomodation in a beautiful location.” The accommodation is just big enough for two people but there is all the equipment needed. It is spotlessly clean and comfortable. It was great to be able to step outside and sit in a courtyard with a lovely view.
The garden and courtyard are shared with the other cottages.
The area is excellent for walking. It is a great location for the central and southern Lake District. There is a reliable bus service through Ambleside. The information in the Reception area is very useful especially other guests comments on local eating places.
There is no large supermarket very near, so it is best to come prepared.
“Lovely group of cottages set in spectacular location with breathtaking views” The spacious cottage is one of five located in a valley and set in rural countryside approximately 1 mile from Ambleside with ample parking and is very safe for young children. On arrival there was a vase of fresh flowers, milk in the fridge, a range of sachets for drinks and a plate of biscuits which we thought was a very nice touch. The cottage is upside down so the lounge and kitchen/diner are upstairs. The views are spectacular. The decor is very pleasant, in keeping with a country cottage, pine and squashy settees which are comfortable and homely. The facilities are very good. The log burner in the lounge is electric but is a nice feature. The kingsize bed was very comfortable. The en-suite is well-appointed, all towels and linen are provided, the shower is very efficient and there was always plenty of hot water. We found the use of free wi fi very useful. All the furnishings and fittings are of good condition. There is a back door leading to a pretty shared patio area. The Information Room is full of brochures with ideas of things to do and places to go. There are many walks you can do from the cottage without using your car. It is an excellent location for exploring The Lake District. The scenery in Autumn is magnificent. A little expensive but worth it.
“Fabulous place” Stayed here for four days with my wife and two sons, aged 16 & 10. The cottage is fabulous and has everything you need. Owners left a welcome pack of milk, bread, orange juice and a bottle of wine. Cottage is spotlessly clean. Great location for the town, loads of places to eat and drink. Great for walks and close to ferry. Great to have a parking space too. Would definitely recommend.
“Beautiful cottage in a beautiful location” We had a wonderful week in this beautiful cottage, 3 adults was a bit cosy but we were lucky enough to be able to eat outside in the grassed courtyard every evening.
Generally very well equipped - only problem we had is that the fridge/freezer is actually a fridge with a tiny icebox inside but the residents in number one came to our rescue and let us keep some frozen food in their freezer. The residents around the courtyard helped to make the holiday, the communal BBQ they invited us to join in with on the last night meant a lovely end to a very relaxing break. Would definitely return.
“This place really ticked all the boxes” A beautiful setting, so private yet close enough to Ambleside. All staff from the booking to the arrival were excellent. The kitchen had all we needed and the extra touches of having board games, high chair, stair gates, XBox were so helpful with children. Very comfortable.

Ideal holiday home
Perfect location near local attractions. The house was outstanding, clean & beautifully furnished, everything had been thought of. As we had excellent weather during our stay, we made good use of the outside balcony to admire the stunning scenery. …
Halfway House 4* Lakeland 17th cottage Ambleside
Halfway House - our perfect getaway!
Prior to booking this property we were looking for a house that was not situated within a town. We were delighted with the location of Halfway House as it is only a short drive from Ambleside for our everyday essentials. The entrance to the house itself could be easily missed (as our Tesco delivery driver also found out) but once found, perfectly easy to get to.
We stayed at this property for two weeks. We have two young children and found the location perfect for seeking plenty of adventures to keep them entertained. Equally, they thoroughly enjoyed playing in the garden with their toys whilst we watched on from the decking area. It was lovely to watch the birds, butterflies and frogs appreciating the garden too!
The property itself was well equipped for our needs. Whilst we were on holiday, we both still needed access to the internet for work commitments and we had no issues with the wifi.
This is the perfect place to relax and unwind. As a family we just loved it here and will return in the future.
Liz was very helpful throughout the booking process and in answering any of our queries prior to our visit. Thank you! …
TOM HEIGHTS, romantic, WIFI, private parking, shop & pub 5 minute walk, in Amble
Great apartment, perfectly situated
Stylish and well-equipped, it has everything you'll need. Right in the heart of Ambleside, lots of pubs and restaurants nearby. We loved sitting at the table by the window with a cup of coffee or a glass of wine and do some people watching. Zeffirelli's next door with live music and great vegetarian food is also worth mentioning. …

A wonderful stay in this lovely cottage... really comfortable, a home from home with an extra touch of luxury! Owner very helpful, great communication. …
Lovely spacious house with everything you need
I've been lucky enough to stay a few times at Lakefield House. The house itself is very comfortable with everything you need for a relaxed holiday - games, books, DVDs, more kitchen implements than I own myself. It's also well designed for a big group: it has two living areas, one of which is very spacious with an incredible view of the lake; room to hang wet coats and leave muddy boots, and plenty of bathrooms. Even if you're stuck in on wet days it never gets overcrowded and there's plenty to keep you entertained.
The location means we never had to travel very far to see the Lakedistrict sights. It's a few minutes walk to Beatrix Potter's house and there's also plenty of pretty walks we did straight from the house. Nearby we have visited lots of attractions including Ruskin's house, the lakes at Tarn Hows and the working Bobbin Mill, all of which I'd recommend.
It really is the ideal place to stay and I have always had a wonderful time at the house in this beautiful part of the Lakes. …
