“Perfect, Cosy & Unique .... A Home From Home” This is a wonderful cottage with all of the amenities you could need. Within walking distance of Ambleside with plenty of walks on the doorstep.
As soon as you enter The Mounting Steps you feel like you're at home. The fact that it is an "upside down" house makes it even more special.
If you're looking for a romantic breakaway in a quiet area but that is close enough to all that Ambleside has to offer, look no further.
The special touches of a bottle of wine & chocolates left by the owner are just the cherry on the cake!
This was our second stay at the cottage & we have already booked to stay again next year...thanks very much to Maggie & Greg for sharing their wonderful property.
“Perfect Lakes location” Above Stock is convenient, clean and comfortable. This was our third stay and we will be seeking to book again. The flat is very nicely furnished and very well situtaed in the centre of the lovely Lakeland town of Ambleside. The new bathroom is beautifully finished, the bedrooms are warm and spacious and the kitchen has all you require if you want to make your stay completely self catering.
“Beautiful apartment in an ideal location” We thoroughly enjoyed our stay in this beautiful apartment which is very cosy and well equipped. We loved the newly refurbished bathroom and the heated floor was very luxurious.
All the main facilities in Ambleside are just a short walk away (albeit down a sharp gradient).
Although we were visiting outside of the main season there were still plenty of good restaurants open with a good atmosphere.
“Lovely group of cottages set in spectacular location with breathtaking views” The spacious cottage is one of five located in a valley and set in rural countryside approximately 1 mile from Ambleside with ample parking and is very safe for young children. On arrival there was a vase of fresh flowers, milk in the fridge, a range of sachets for drinks and a plate of biscuits which we thought was a very nice touch. The cottage is upside down so the lounge and kitchen/diner are upstairs. The views are spectacular. The decor is very pleasant, in keeping with a country cottage, pine and squashy settees which are comfortable and homely. The facilities are very good. The log burner in the lounge is electric but is a nice feature. The kingsize bed was very comfortable. The en-suite is well-appointed, all towels and linen are provided, the shower is very efficient and there was always plenty of hot water. We found the use of free wi fi very useful. All the furnishings and fittings are of good condition. There is a back door leading to a pretty shared patio area. The Information Room is full of brochures with ideas of things to do and places to go. There are many walks you can do from the cottage without using your car. It is an excellent location for exploring The Lake District. The scenery in Autumn is magnificent. A little expensive but worth it.

Ambleside is a small traditional town in Cumbria. It hasn't changed much over the years, but the cobbled streets and Victorian houses remain a popular destination for tourists from around the world.
For centuries, it has been an inspirational spot for authors and artists. William Wordsworth, John Ruskin and Beatrix Potter all enjoyed their time here. Find out more about Ambleside's famous residents in the Armitt Museum during your stay.
What to Do
Make sure to visit Beatrix Potter's house, Hill Top. It's just as she left it, and is full of her writing and sketches. While there you'll see the beautiful landscape that inspired the tales of Peter Rabbit and his friends.

Lovely spacious house with everything you need
I've been lucky enough to stay a few times at Lakefield House. The house itself is very comfortable with everything you need for a relaxed holiday - games, books, DVDs, more kitchen implements than I own myself. It's also well designed for a big group: it has two living areas, one of which is very spacious with an incredible view of the lake; room to hang wet coats and leave muddy boots, and plenty of bathrooms. Even if you're stuck in on wet days it never gets overcrowded and there's plenty to keep you entertained.
The location means we never had to travel very far to see the Lakedistrict sights. It's a few minutes walk to Beatrix Potter's house and there's also plenty of pretty walks we did straight from the house. Nearby we have visited lots of attractions including Ruskin's house, the lakes at Tarn Hows and the working Bobbin Mill, all of which I'd recommend.
It really is the ideal place to stay and I have always had a wonderful time at the house in this beautiful part of the Lakes. …
Halfway House 4* Lakeland 17th cottage Ambleside
Fabulous, historical house to explore the Lake District
The house is in a great location to explore the area. It is away from the busyness of Ambleside and Windermere but only a short drive to either. It is in a beautiful setting on the edge of a small lake that can be accessed through a gate from the peaceful back garden. Unfortunately the weather prevented us from getting full enjoyment of the patio area and garden, but on a lovely day it would be perfect for that glass of wine or beer at the end of busy day. The house is a gem: very well appointed, excellent beds and warm and comfortable.
From here it is a 20 minute drive to Keswick ( great market on Thursday and Saturday) which is just a 5 minute drive to the Castlerigg Stone Circle. Take time to do this if you can.
The other things I would recommend is a drive to Hawkshead and Hill Top farm for a Beatrix Potter experience, the Lakeland Motor Museum and the fascinating Stott Bobbin Mill. …
The Dove Cot 4* romantic cottage Ambleside
This cottage is perfect for couples. Everything is there with lovely view and it’s a great location to explore the lakes, will definitely go back.
The cottage was hard to find at first as postcode given doesn’t match location according to Sar Nav. It is also on main road so a little difficult to see pulling out. However, when inside the cottage you do not hear the noise of the road. …
We loved our stay in this apartment - one of the most comfortable holiday properties we have ever rented. The location is perfect, literally steps from Ambleside where we spent our evenings enjoying the local restaurants. We had one glorious October day where we were able to sit on the balcony and take in the beautiful view. We spent our days fell walking and were delighted to arrive home to this comfortable apartment each afternoon. Having paid for three days leisure club membership we swam every afternoon, and always had the pool to ourselves.
The apartment is well equipped, microwave, dishwasher, sky tv, plenty of glasses, cutlery and crockery. It was immaculately presented, clean with incredibly comfortable furniture. One minor addition may be adding a soft mattress topper to the bed when set up as a king as without this it feels a little like two singles pushed together with a large ridge in the middle, however this is minor and would not prevent me from giving 5 stars.
We would love to return. …
The Old School House Hawkshead
Family get together
Location was brilliant, so easy to reach Coniston and Windermere for example. Enjoyed the ferry crossings. Very close and stroll to and from restaurants/pubs. The B&B was rented out as a self contained cottage to us, so we had the benefit of large ensuite rooms, two lounges and a large dining room. Additionally the authenticity of a very old building steeped in character. Ultimate self catering! Our hosts provided everything for a good stay right down to washing up liquid. Very clean and the beds were extremely comfortable. A goos nights sleep was had by all. We were lucky to be able to see the fireworks display from our window. We would look to book again next year. Excellent all round …
