Why Stow-on-the-Wold?

This charming market town in the Cotswolds is perfectly picturesque, and nestled at the top of a hill within the breathtakingly beautiful Cotswolds area. With a strong artistic and literary presence, it's the ideal place to relax and enjoy an idyllic time in the beautiful countryside, so be sure to book a holiday rental in Stow on the Wold.

About Stow on the Wold

Situated at the top of a hill in the Cotswolds, and at the junction of seven major roads, this Gloucestershire town has historically been an important trade centre, and still today offers some excellent shopping options.

The village originated as an Iron Age fort, because of its great defensive location at the top of a hill, and was the site of a major battle and Royalist surrender during the English Civil War, so there's a lot of history to explore.

What to Do

Browse the gorgeous works at the Fosse Gallery of Fine Art, or if photography is more your thing, the Peter Martin Gallery is an excellent place to visit and see some local work.

Learn about the exciting history of the area, including more about the historic Battle of Stow on the Wold at the lovely Visitor Information Centre.

Lovely Stay in Stow on the Wold

Posting House Barn is a beautiful three story house. Well equipped kitchen with plenty of seating. Pretty little garden with BBQ and table and chairs. Comfortable lounge with a variety of games and DVDs. Toilet andbedroom on each floor. We had top bedroom with the beams, beautiful room, just remember to duck :o) Situated just off the main square of Stow which was perfect. Recommend The Queens Head for Sunday lunch and Stow Lodge for a special meal out. Enjoy!! see more

Lovely cottage in an excellent location

We stayed for a week in January. We had friends come to visit for a few nights and so were at the max 8 capacity for a few days. We did not feel on top of each other and had plenty of room. A walk in shower would be a vast improvement as this is one thing the cottage lacks; it would drastically reduce getting ready time each morning. The shower on the top floor does not work sufficiently and it is very difficult to stand up straight because of the sloped ceilings. The cottage is a little gem footsteps away from the square which has a range of boutique shops and many pubs... we tried most of them and The Porch House was our favorite. We had a great time and would definitely recommend the place. We had a great time at the Indian next door to and the staff there were so friendly. We were worried about parking as there is no off street parking but we always found an available space outside or down the road from the cottage. The road outside is very busy and very noisy. I was not aware of this at the time of booking. I am a light sleeper and woke most mornings at 4.30am when lorries went thundering past, so don’t expect this to be a peaceful retreat. However, the amenities in the cottage and standard of furnishing, location definitely make up for it. Thank you for a great week away! see more
The Apartment, James William House, located in the heart of Stow on the Wold
Perfect stay in beautiful Stow-On-The-Wold.

My Husband and I have just returned from a short break at this beautiful apartment in Stow-On-The-Wold and I can highly recommend it! The location was just perfect, on a quiet street just off the main square and near the beautiful church. We normally stay at places a little more remote, but this time it was great to be in the centre and be able to walk to the local pubs in the evening and not have to worry about driving back (there is an allocated parking space near by). The apartment was decorated and furnished to very high standard. The living room was massive, with a separate bedroom (bed was so comfy!), and modern kitchen and bathroom. We even had a bottle of wine waiting for us on arrival, which was a great touch!. Overall, we love the Cotswolds and especially Stow and this apartment was just the perfect place to stay for us. We will definitely be staying here again on our next trip… see more
