Location description from owner

The England region

The Peak District National Park was the first National Park in the UK and is also the most popular. This is not surprising, given that Sheffield, Manchester and Birmingham are all within an hours drive. If you like walking there are many public footpaths around Winster, most notably the Limestone Way. Walks to nearby Birchover, Elton and Robin Hoods Stride are very popular. Cycling along the Tissington Trail and High Peak Trail offer long distance, traffic free cycling with bike hire available all year round. Close by are the delightful towns of Bakewell, Ashbourne and Matlock which are ideal for groceries and shopping. Chatsworth House, Haddon Hall, Hardwick House and Bolsover Castle are all within a short drive of Winster. Gulliver's Kingdom theme park in Matlock Bath is a great place to entertain younger children and for older children, Chesterfield contains a 10 screen cinema and bowling alley, whilst Alton Towers is only 40 mins drive away.

Winster

Winster Village was once a thriving lead mining village that boasted 20 pubs and 2000 residents. Today it is a popular tourist destination which still retains its village community. The age old tradition of the Winster Wakes, complete with Morris dancing, still continue today. The old part of the village contains some fine historical buildings such as the Market House and the poorhouse. The hillside to the north has many of the old lead mining cottages for which the village is renowned. The roads of East Bank and West Bank are bi-sected by footpaths, known locally as gennels, that allow walkers to view beautiful cottage gardens. Winster opens these gardens to the public when it hosts the Secret Gardens of Winster weekend. The pubs at Winster include the Miners Standard and the Bowling Green , the latter being CAMRA winner for local pubs.Winster is a great base for exploring the Peak District.

Getting around

The best way to get around the village is on foot and this provides some stunning views of the beautiful gardens from the footpaths. In and around the peak district, a car is the best way to get around. However, Winster is served by a regular bus service to Matlock, which has a railway station that connects to the Midlands.

Interaction with guest

We prefer to let people discover the Croft and the local area for themselves. However, as we have had holiday homes in the peak district for over 20 years, we can provide advice and help when requested.

“Rest & Relaxation!”

Reviewed 16 May 2017

What a fantastic cottage with everything you need to chill out and relax on your holiday. We had such a lovely time chilling and chatting in the well laid out garden before moving down into the conservatory once the sun went down. All in all between the cottage and the Peaks it's hard to beat!!

“Perfect Peak District cottage, packed with charm”

Reviewed 1 Dec 2016

This was my second stay at The Croft, and it won't be my last. The cottage is full of character and makes the perfect base for long walks, complete with crackling fire and hot bath at the end of a long, cold day! Loved every minute and look forward to being back in the future.

“Exellent holiday cottage”

We spent a wonderful 4 days here in the Peak District. The cottage is absolutely perfect and very well located in a super village with 2 pubs and a small shop. The owner was incredibly helpful - we would definitely stay here again.

“Derbyshire Delight!!”

What a beautiful little gem The Croft in Winster is!!! The cottage is very welcoming and warm and very well appointed! A lovely retreat to return to after a hard days walking with our two dogs. We had very thing we needed supplied in the cottage and to be able to use the garden so late in the season was an added bonus.......views to die for!!!! We found the village and villagers extremely friendly and enjoyed a lovely Sunday lunch in one of the village pubs The Bowling Green. Will definitely look to return again!!

“Excellent getaway cottage”

A delightful few days spent in this beautiful cottage and village. The cottage was perfect for a family of four; couldn't fault it. Communication with owner was first class. Would definitely say here again

“Lovely cosy cottage equipped to a very high standard”

Reviewed 30 Nov 2014

Really lovely cottage equipped to a very high specification. We stayed when the weather was dank and gloomy and it was lovely to arrive to a warm and cosy cottage. The views from the garden are fantastic and in summer the outdoor space for eating would be lovely. The stairs are very steep and so is the walk down to the village and this would be a problem for anyone with walking difficulties.

“Exceeded our expectations”

Reviewed 29 Jul 2013

The cottage is lovely and is in the idyllic village of Winster, in a very beautiful area of the country. The village shop and village pub are great. We had a fantastic meal at the pub in the neighbouring village. Myself, My husband, 2 kids and our dog stayed for a long weekend. The garden is small and perfect. Because it is at the top of the village the views are spectacular.

Owner's reply: I am glad to hear you had a wonderful stay at The Croft. Winster is very peaceful, a real gem in the Peak District. I do hope you return in the future.
