Location description from owner
The England region
Longwood Cottage is situated less than 15 minutes drive from the M.50 motorway yet is in another world being situated just off a winding country lane with very little passing traffic. The hamlet of Sollers Hope is situated in south east Herefordshire amongst some of the most beautiful countryside in Britain. Surrounded by woods, orchards, farmland and rollling green hills, it is bordered by Marcle Ridge from where there are superb views towards the Malvern Hills to the east, the Cotswolds to the south east, and the Welsh Borders and Black Mountains to the west. The River Wye is about two miles away, and the towns of Ross on Wye and Ledbury are both approximately eight miles away. Hereford City and its famous Cathedral (home of the Mappa Mundi) is approximately eight miles distant. There is easy access to many miles of footpaths, including the Wye Valley Walk and the Forest of Dean. Outdoor activities in the area include numerous golf courses, canoe expeditions on the River Wye and fishing. The nearby village of Much Marcle is the home of Weston's Cider, where you can a tour and enjoy a cider tasting. There are many ancient churches, fascinating old houses and gardens open to the public, as well as interesting leisure drives on uncrowded roads following the Black and White Village Trail, or over the hills to the book town of Hay on Wye. Throughout the summer there are countless country shows to visit, and in the autumn traditional ploughing matches take place with competitors and heavy horses and vintage tractors from all over the country.
Sollers Hope is the smallest of the picturesque Hope villages - both Woolhope and Fownhope are nearby and have country inns which are well known for their local ales and good food. However, if you enjoy cooking, why not take a bread making course at a nearby farmhouse.
The area is known for its unspoilt countryside and is listed as an area of outstanding natural beauty. Step back in time to enjoy the peace and tranquility and at night there is so little light pollution that star watching is a favourite pastime from the cottage deck. During you stay you may be lucky enough to see the local family of fallow deer pass through the adjacent fields, and there are frequently sightings of badgers, foxes and even occasionally hares at play. A short drive from the cottage is Haugh Wood with its miles of beautiful walks on gravel tracks - a lovely walk even when its raining.
The cottage itself is set within our 30 acre smallholding with the owner's property located a little way behind the cottage. There are uninterrupted views over the local countryside and visitors are welcome to walk in the grounds, sit at the picnic table by the lake or enjoy the wood. In the springtime the wild flowers in Long Wood have to be seen to be believed. This is a private woodland with a circular walk just for ourselves and our guests.
Ross on Wye is a short drive away with its variety of small shops, historic market hall and riverside walks.

“The owner makes you feel welcome and wanted, cottage so clean and excellent all round”
From the moment we arrived it was all about making us feel wanted. Veronica made my Mum, my cockapoo and myself so welcome. She was attentive without being over-powering. The accommodation and grounds were so much more than what we expected. The scenery was so beautiful. Tips on where to eat and go were spot on. I have already recommended the cottage to some friends and certainly plan on re-visiting later this year or next. I know I needed a holiday, but boy this one was over and above expectations. Thank you so, so much Veronica
