My wife and I have visited the island many times now and our love for the place and it’s people remains undiminished. This time, in addition to all that we knew we would enjoy we had the privilege of staying in awesome digs. What’s not to love about freshly brewed ground coffee on tap? Awesome. Everything else was top notch too, especially the drams, grub and staff at the hotel over the street. Brilliant time had by us and our dear auld friends, who fell in love with the place on their first visit to the isles in their early eighties. Troopers. And thanks …
Islay Cottages, Kilchoman
Spectacular setting, can only hear birdsong and waves....cosy cottage
My husband, 9 month daughter and me stayed in Sanaig cottage just before Easter and we really enjoyed it, very atmospheric and beautiful setting, hares, bird and wildlife and a ruined church by the sea. You can literally hear nothing but bird song and sea. Stunning beach! Roads in are a little potholed but OK. These are traditional small cottages (my favourite self catering!) but relatively spacious in everything but the bathroom and bath.
The owners provided a cot and high chair which was great. Just for information, you get towels, bed linen, tea towels, washing up liquid, salt and hand soap but no complimentary toiletries, tea or coffee (Not that I expect them, just FYI) so remember to bring your own. You get one coal fire set for you and then you need your own coal/wood/Kindling. FYI we got kindling from shop in Bowmore and it was very difficult to catch, very sappy! But so satisfying sit by roaring fire. Heating is underfloor (I think) and a thermostat in each room, we ended up turning heating off timer on to permanently on, as it was cold!
In summary, I think it's a great wee place and would happily go again, but would really appreciate a better shower, as the bath is very tiny and as I'm 5'7"tall I felt a bit farcical in the bath . If you are a visitor from abroad, used to spacious modern bathrooms and mix taps, it will be a bit of shock to the system and you won't find it pleasant. But I'm used to quickly older houses so I didn't mind too much.....
Pros -Amazing location, comfy cottage, helpful owners.
Cons- very squeaky double bed, small bathroom (toilet door hits toilet when opened) shower had poor pressure. Typical "older British house cottage" problems.... …
