Location description from owner

The Scotland region

The Isle of Islay is the southernmost of the inner Hebrides which lie off the west coast of Scotland. The islands of Jura and Colonsay, the Kintyre peninsula and Northern Ireland are Islay's neighbours.

Islay is home to just over 3,000 people and considerably more geese, other migratory birds and wildlife. The island provides plenty of opportunity to get away from it all with its vast sweeping panoramic vistas, miles of pristine white sandy beaches and some rugged totally uninhabited hillsides for the more adventurous. The weather is not always balmy - this is Scotland after all - but summers are often fine and there are compensations for the odd wet day: where else can you be the only person on a glorious 5 mile long sandy beach?

The island offers an amazing variety of activities including bird and wild life watching, walking and cycling trails, pony trekking, island hopping to Jura or Colonsay. There are 8 working whisky distilleries to visit, stunning deserted beaches stretching for miles, a world class links golf course and many ancient historical sites, not to mention the friendly locals who are happy to help you find your way around!

Port Charlotte

Port Charlotte is an idyllic, picture postcard conservation village of whitewashed Victorian cottages, built in the 1820s to provide accommodation for the workers at the Port Charlotte distillery. Situated on the shores of Loch Indaal with its white sandy beaches and sheltered waters, the village is now a popular holiday destination offering a tranquil and relaxing base from which to explore the wealth of activities Islay has to offer.

There are three excellent restaurants in the village: the award winning Port Charlotte Hotel with its fine dining restaurant and a cosy bar with over 200 Islay whiskies on offer; the Loch Indaal Hotel, with locally sourced seafood and reasonably priced pub menu; Yan's Kitchen for seafood and dishes using locally sourced produce. Both hotels regularly have live traditional music playing.

For those visitors wishing to explore Islay's world famous distilleries, Port Charlotte is just a few minutes' drive away from the Bruichladdich, Bowmore and Kilchoman distilleries and centrally placed to visit those further afield.

Local amenities in the village include a well-stocked village shop with post office and fuel pump, bicycle hire, the Museum of Islay Life and the Islay Wildlife Centre.
