The West Country region
The West Cornwall area is a premier holiday destination and offers something for everyone. Take your time to relax and bask in the sunshine, enjoying many of the golden beaches that adorn the West Cornwall coastline or take a relaxing walk through the lush moorland or a more energetic hike through the cliff tops which will give you access to amazing scenery and you may be lucky enough to catch a glimpse of dolphins playing in the Ocean.
Picturesque villages dot this area and there is always something happening in the summer months that range from local festivals to outdoor activities. There is an abundance of culture, heritage and spirit in this area. Sample the wonderful Cornish cuisine in one of the many traditional pubs or watch the sun set whilst enjoying cream tea and cakes in one of the many cafes. This area is also a must for shoppers with its mix of big name retail outlets and smaller eclectic shops.
Whether you are looking for an action packed holiday or somewhere to get away from it all, West Cornwall is an ideal destination for any type of holidaymaker.
Marazion lies on the coast of Mount's Bay and is an ideal destination for any holidaymaker. The golden sandy beaches are perfect for families and the ocean is clear and warm. The town itself is thriving and offers a good array of local shops, pubs and restaurants.
This location is a great base for touring and exploring the whole of west Cornwall, and is perfect for cycling or walking holidays (the cottage is right next to the South West Coast Path) and the local scenery is stunning.
Just offshore is St.Michael's Mount, the world-famous tidal island topped by a medieval church and castle. Walk to the island along a cobbled causeway or catch a ferryboat when the tide is in. St. Michael's Mount is the most popular National Trust attraction in the whole south-west and among the top 10 NT attractions in Great Britain.
Penzance is the tourist, business and shopping centre for the far west of Cornwall, the Lands End peninsula. The town has a combination of major supermarkets, national chain outlets and a wide range of smaller independent shops, well worth a look. It has the art-deco Jubilee Pool, a fabulous 1930s open-air lido, the Exchange art gallery, the Cornish Pirates home base.
Penzance is the transport hub for the area - it has direct rail links to London Paddington and other major British cities: the harbour has the ferry link to the Isles of Scilly: and it's on the A30 trunk road linking Cornwall to the rest of the UK, as well as being the centre for the bus network running to most towns and villages in the area.
St Ives holds a very special place in the heart of anyone who has ever visited this small Cornish fishing village. Wide beaches of golden sand washed by the a turquoise sea gives this western tip of the United Kingdom a uniquely Mediterranean feel.
Recently voted 'The Best Seaside Resort in the UK' by the US British Heritage Magazine, and a member of the exclusive most 'Beautiful Bays in the World Club', St Ives is a destination that will appeal to all ages and tastes.
For those who enjoy a beach-based holiday, the town's four main beaches have won numerous awards for cleanliness, professional lifeguard cover, superb café-restaurants and general facilities while Porthmeor beach, in particular, is one of Europe's major surfing venues.
For those who prefer to explore, a stroll around the streets and quaint cobbled alleyways of the old town will reveal fisherman's cottages decked with flower baskets and window boxes brimming with fuschias and geraniums - St Ives has won its category in the 'Britain in Bloom' competition for three consecutive years. Art galleries and studios exhibit paintings and sculptures by local artists who choose St Ives, with its unique and intense daylight, as a very special place to work. For the modern art lover there is, of course, the Tate Gallery, the Barbara Hepworth Studio and Museum and the Bernard Leach Pottery as well as the internationally-known September Festival of arts and music.
