The first thing you notice about Penpoll is the peace! Here you truly escape from the hustle and bustle of life - whatever the season - as Kingfishers dart in and out of the creek. It is a very special and much loved spot, where the choice is to enjoy the peace of the garden, and surrounding countryside, or to get involved in all the varied activities this beautiful part of the South Cornwall coast has to offer. There are stunning views of bird-life on the river and the surrounding countryside from the house and garden.

Recently refurbished, Penpoll is extremely comfortable, with an Aga and wood burner for cosy evenings. The four comfortable bedrooms - all with a view of the river - can accommodate two families of budding swallows and amazons. With dams in the creek to build, the large garden to explore, sailing lessons, boat hire or canoe expeditions in the harbour, safe sandy beaches to explore, the days are quickly filled. The pretty harbour town of Fowey boasts great restaurants, art galleries and shops. Golf, cycling and horse riding are all easily available within a 20 minute drive.

The West Country region

This is a spectacularly beautiful and unspoilt part of the South Cornish coast, with uninterrupted views of agricultural and National Trust land. The South Coast Path and The Saints Way provide some of the most beautiful walking scenery in Britain. It is a very special area to visit, whatever time of year you choose.

The comings and goings in Fowey's working harbour, and non stop boating activity are fascinating just to sit and watch even if you don't want to get on the water yourself. Visits from Navy ships, the tugs navigating large vessels in and out; yachts in full sail; the Lifeboat going out on rescue practice; sailing lessons and the thrills and spills of capsize drills, are all a regular morning's viewing over a cappucino or two!

Further afield, a visit to Falmouth's very impressive Maritime Museum is well worth a day trip (1+ hours) plus great food and shopping.

Lostwithiel

The working Harbour town of Fowey and the surrounding area is steeped in history, and made famous by the writings of Daphne du Maurier (see Rebecca's beach, Polridmouth 15mins from Penpoll), Sir Arthur Quiller Couch (sailing in Fowey Harbour). and Kenneth Williams, (Imagine Ratty and Mole from Wind in the Willows, as you canoe upriver for a picnic).

Favourite nearby beaches (within 15mins drive) include:

Lantic Bay. A bit of a walk, and a steep climb up but so worth it!

Talland Bay. Cafe & shop, rock pools and sandy beach

Polridmouth. Daphne du Maurier's beach at Menabiliy. A 10 minute walk, but again, worth it!

Polkerris. A true smuggler's cove beach, with pub and great restaurant right on the beach.

From Fowey, take a ferry across the bay to Megavissey where there is a steam train, or drive to St Austell and visit the Shipwreck rescue and Heritage Centre in Charlestown Bay. Polperro is another pretty historic harbour town to visit nearby. (30 mins drive)

Lerryn, (5 mins from Penpoll) is a dreamy riverside village. it has a great village store, from where you can buy and order groceries, and papers and a good pub in the heart of the village. Canoe and cycling expeditions are run from here, in addition to beautiful walks along the river Fowey.

Lostwithiel (15 mins from Penpoll), once the capital of Cornwall, has plenty to offer. Local history interest, climb up to the ruins of Restormel Castle, play a round of golf on the good golf course, browse antique shops, and the Duchy of Cornwall Nursery. Beyond here is Bodmin Moor - rugged and hauntingly beautiful. Good for walking and seeing the old tin and slate mines dotted about.

"Absolutely idyllic location and luxurious property"

This was the perfect holiday - having arrived at the property after an 9 hour drive, once we stepped through the doors of the cottage the stress immediately disappeared. It was beautifully furnished and of such high standard, everything had been thought of from the hot water bottles for the children to the real log fire and comfortable clean beds for the adults to make your stay enjoyable, it truly was luxurious. The fact that there was so much space in the property allowed us all to have our privacy without us feeling on top of one other, 9 in total. The grounds of the property were equally beautiful and had the most amazing views, although a car is necessary the peace and tranquillity was perfect and reached all our expectations and more.
