The Heart of England/Peak District

Chester is within easy driving distance of the North Wales countryside and coast. The city also makes a convenient base for exploring the Wirral Peninsular, and visiting Liverpool and Manchester.

Chester

Chester is a beautiful old English city with a unique walled centre. It is situated in the North West of England on a loop in the river Dee.

The city is rich in history from it's days as an ancient Roman port to it's medieval buildings which give the city centre it's uniquely English character. These buildings now house a wealth of shops, cafes and restaurants, making Chester a great place for a weekend city break.

Chester is famous for it's race course, one of the oldest in England, which still holds regular race meetings throughout the season.

Chester is also home to the UK's number one zoo, set in award winning gardens and a short drive or bus ride from the city centre.

Baker's cottage is in a quiet residential area with a wide mix of housing stock as you might expect in an area convenient to a city centre. A short walk brings you to the local shops, pubs and cafes of Handbridge. You can cross the river by the Old Dee bridge or Queen's Park footbridge which bring you to the city walls, just half a mile from the cottage.

The city's pubs, cafes and restaurants begin there and the main shopping area starts around the junction with Pepper Street which is 0.6 miles away. The Cross, which is generally accepted as marking Chester city centre, is 0.8 miles which, at average walking speed is about 15 minutes from the house. Many of our previous guests rate the location of the cottage as one of its most memorable features.

Although it is easily walkable, we appreciate that guests may not want to walk after a long day's shopping or late at night and if that is the case we recommend using one of the reasonably priced and reliable local taxi firms (we provide their phone numbers in the cottage).

It's great to read how much our guests pack into their holidays – there's so much to see in this part of the world (we've been coming here for nearly ten years and we still haven't done everything on our wish list!). We're glad to see they took advantage of the excellent local public transport network which gives everyone a break from driving. We're looking forward to welcoming them back in the future for some more exploring.

"Be Warned an Awful Experience"

The property is not a cottage as described but a two up two down mid terrace in the middlein the centre of an ex local authority housing estate in a less than desirable area of Chester and is not appr… More

This is a very unusual complaint. Over the last nine and a half years of letting we have accommodated over 300 families at Baker's Cottage. In that time no other guests left early because they were unhappy with the house or its location, or indeed for any other reason that we are aware of.
We were astonished to hear from these guests that they had left after one night of their three night stay without even speaking to us first about their concerns. Sadly, it seems that Baker's Cottage didn't suit them; however, we consider their demand for compensation of twice the cost of their holiday to be unreasonable.
We have referred them to the dispute resolution service provided by the English Association of Self Catering Operators (EASCO). As members of EASCO, we are committed to their code of practice and willing to abide by their independent arbitration scheme.
The term 'holiday cottage' is a common description in the UK holiday industry for this type of small house. In the past we have considered and rejected other descriptions as they could lead guests to expect a larger property. Since many of our previous guests also refer to it as a cottage we believe this is a reasonable description.
The assertion that it is located in the centre of an ex local authority housing estate is untrue.
The distance from the cottage to the Cross at the city centre, is 0.8 miles which, at average walking speed, is about 15 minutes away so we find it hard to understand this reviewer's claim that it took them 45 minutes.
Chester is a relatively benign and friendly city but we understand that guests may be apprehensive about walking in an unfamiliar place at night which is why we provide phone numbers for local taxi firms.
We ask our guests to contact us with any questions or concerns regarding the cottage. The cleanliness of the cottage is especially important to us and if there were problems then we would not have hesitated to call the cleaners back straight away to put them right. Unfortunately, the guests undertook to clean the cottage themselves instead of reporting the issues to us and left us with no evidence to verify that it was unsatisfactory.
We love our cottage and are disappointed that these guests seem to have dismissed it out of hand when so many others have found it such a great base for exploring one of the most beautiful cities in England.

It's always gratifying to read that our guests felt at home at the cottage – we want our guests to feel comfortable there and find it a warm and welcoming base to return to after exploring Chester in the winter months.
We look forward to welcoming them back in the future,

"Wonderful stay, warm and friendly perfect for our family"

We had a wonderful stay in Bakers cottage. It had everything we needed and lots more. Close to the city centre which was perfect when we were reliant on walking or buses to get around. The local shops offered all we needed for self catering, and a variety of restaurants, cafes and pubs in close proximity were perfect too. We travelled from Adelaide, Australia to spend time with friends living nearby and they were also very impressed with the quality of the cottage. The communication when booking was excellent and followup when we left my husbands wedding ring behind was really appreciated We highly recommend Bakers Cottage.

"Gorgeous, Cosy, memorable stay in October"

My husband and I stayed at Bakers Cottage for a long weekend with friends. From the moment we emailed the owner, Jo, our experience could not have been better. Jo was quick to get back to us, meticulous in providing us with all the information we needed regarding our stay, and altogether lovely to book through. As far as the cottage goes, I cannot praise it enough. The home is decorated beautifully- lots of lovely little touches that you usually do not get when renting a holiday home. The cottage has absolutely everything you would need from DVD's and games, to books, toys, twinkly lanterns and even a lovely chilled bottle of wine in the fridge! The heart of the cottage is the dining kitchen, which is a wonderfully comfy place to sit, chill out, chat and eat dinner. I imagine that in the summer months, it is lovely to sit with the doors open onto the private yard outside.

The location of the cottage is perfect- a genuine 10 minute stroll into the city centre. However, there are plenty of lovely, local cafes and pubs- The Ship Inn beside the river, and a particular mention to the 'Brown Sugar' cafe, just a 5 minute walk towards town, the owners were welcoming and the food was delicious- we had a lovely sunday morning brunch there. Handbridge has a lovely village type feel to it.

In summary, my husband, friends and I had a really wonderful stay here. Thankyou Jo, we will definately return!

"What an amazing find."

We met my son & his girlfriend at the cottage and had the most relaxing weekend. I agree with all the other reviews - it is well equiped, very cosy, within walking distance from Chester, nicely decorated and free parking.
We have already recommended the cottage to friends and hope to return one day soon.

"Lovely appointed cottage, walking distance to city"

We were a party of 3 adult women and hired the cottage for a week. The cottage is very well appointed and is very close to city of Chester. We hired a car for 3 of our days we were there and did some day trips into North Wales. Very easy to navigate and wondeful scenery in North Snowdonia. Lot of things to do and see. City of Chester is beautiful, very picturesque and historic.
We caught a train back to London.
