Brook Cottage occupies a superb position just above the delightful village of Challacombe in Exmoor National Park, with beautiful countryside views from both the front and back. The cottage sleeps up to 2 guests in one bedroom which has a king-sized, four poster bed.
Brook Cottage in Challacombe was originally built as an agricultural dwelling. Some years ago two bedrooms were made into one spacious double aspect room. The historical village of Challacombe is in a rural location in Exmoor Park, but within easy reach of Barnstaple, Lynton and the market town of South Molton. There are footpaths and bridleways connecting Challacombe to moorland and the surrounding countryside, making it ideal for walking, riding, cycling and sightseeing.
There is an abundance of wildlife in the area, with butterflies, birds, (including our regular visitors, housemartins) and many other species, such as buzzards and barn owls. And if you are very lucky, you may see an inquisitive deer coming up to the gate! On clear nights, the sky is spectacular.
Please note, mobile phone signal is possible but can be erratic on Exmoor. It is possible to get reception if you stop at a lay-by on the way to the A399 (just over a mile from the cottage) so we recommend using the internet provided for making WiFi calls.
Inside the front door is a small entrance porch ideal for drying coats and muddy boots. The kitchen is to your left as you enter, and the open-plan sitting room and dining area to the right. There is a small terrace with garden furniture off the dining area. A sun-room is accessed from the sitting room; it is a lovely spot to sit and relax and has access to the garden. There are also glazed doors from the dining area to the terrace and garden. There is a downstairs cloakroom at the the bottom of the stairs.
Upstairs is the large double aspect bedroom with countryside views. It has a King-sized four-poster bed and there is ample hanging space in the wardrobes and a chest of drawers. The shower room is off the upstairs landing, comprising a shower unit, hand basin and toilet. Water heating is electric and controlled by a switch on the landing.
The house is double glazed and well insulated. The wood-burner is very efficient at heating the cottage. A basket of logs will be provided get you started. Further logs can be purchased in the village shop. There are also plug in electric heaters for instant heat should you require them.
There is a terrace with table and chairs just outside the cottage outside the dining area with large lawned garden beyond, which is enclosed by fencing. There are wonderful views from the garden over the neighbouring fields and down into the combe. There is often livestock in the nearby fields so please ensure that dogs do not escape.
Life on the moor can still be very far removed from the comforts of supermarkets and shopping malls, but Challacombe, though a tiny village, boasts a delightful Post Office and licensed Village Shop that also serves delicious cream teas. A home-cooked takeaway service (bookable in advance) is also available on Tuesday evenings. The Black Venus Inn is very popular with locals and serves very good meals.
There is parking for two cars on the forecourt to the front of the property. We recommend reversing in, to make pulling out easier.
