About this location
The Peak District National Park region
The Peak District National Park was the first National Park to be formed and is the most popular National Park in the UK.
This is not surprising, given that the connurbations of Sheffield, Manchester and Birmingham are all within an hour's drive.
If you like walking there are many footpaths in and around Winster, most notably the Limestone Way. Walks to nearby Birchover, Elton and Robin Hood's Stride are very popular. Cycling along the Tissington Trail and High Peak Trail offer long distance, traffic free cycling with bike hire available all year round.
Close by are the delightful towns of Bakewell, Ashbourne and Matlock which are ideal for groceries and shopping.
Chatsworth House, Haddon Hall Hardwick House and Bolsover Castle are all within a short drive of Winster.
Gulliver's Kingdom theme park in Matlock Bath is a great place to entertain younger children and for older children, Chesterfield contains a 10 screen cinema and bowling alley whilst Alton Towers is only 40 mins drive away.
Winster Village was once a thriving lead mining village that boasted 20 pubs and 2000 residents. Today it is a popular tourist destination which still retains its village community. The age old tradition of the Winster Wakes, complete with Morris dancing, still continue today.
The old part of the village contains some fine historical buildings such as the Market House and the poorhouse. The hillside to the north has many of the old lead mining cottages for which the village is renowned.
The roads of East Bank and West Bank are bi-sected by footpaths, known locally as gennels, that allow walkers to view Winster's beautiful cottage gardens. Each year, Winster opens these gardens to the public when it hosts the Secret Gardens of Winster weekend.
The pubs at Winster include the Miners Standard and the Bowling Green , the latter being the 2009 CAMRA winner for local pubs.
Winster is a great base for exploring the Peak District.

"Lovely cosy cottage equipped to a very high standard"
Really lovely cottage equipped to a very high specification. We stayed when the weather was dank and gloomy and it was lovely to arrive to a warm and cosy cottage. The views from the garden are fantastic and in summer the outdoor space for eating would be lovely.
The stairs are very steep and so is the walk down to the village and this would be a problem for anyone with walking difficulties.

Glad you enjoyed the Croft. it is really nice to here people having a lovely holiday in our cottage. The cottage is over 150 years old so i guess people were not quite so tall in those days. Look forward to welcoming you back in the future.
