Drovers' Cottage
Perfect for Dartmoor and surrounding area

Only able to stay for 2 nights, but wish it could have been for more. Such lovely location, a perfect home layout, and a great place to come and relax for time away from "normality". We love to walk on Dartmoor, so to find a place like 'Drovers Cottage' so near, was ideal and we hope to go back at some point in the future.see more

The Dartmoor Den - perfect location for walking the moors and exploring Devon
Lovely holiday home

Jacky and Ricky were lovely and also their very well equipped holiday let. It was perfect for the two of us and our two dogs with the enclosed secure garden. We used this as our base to explore the South Hams as our dogs love the beach and there were a number of dog friendly beaches within one hours travel. If you prefer long moor or river walks these are right on your doorstep. The nice touches provided by our hosts such as the lovely fresh bread and the welcome pack were very much appreciated and extremely tasty. I would have no problem with returning or recommending this holiday let to anyone looking for a home from home.see more

Farmer Oak's Hut-a romantic hideaway.
Beautiful Shepherd's Hut And Site With All Mod Cons

Everything about Farmer Oak's Hut impressed us, the location, the equipment, the quality, the mixture of small scale luxury and private natural surroundings with practical touches. We took advantage of the opportunity to cook on the Kotlich on the open fire which was fun and easy to do with the useful Kotlich handbook. Manya invited us to help ourselves to the eating and cooking apples that were growing on the surrounding trees. This inspired me to cook a pork, apple and cider casserole on the Kotlich. The maps provided were useful for our exploration of the area. Lydford village, Lydford Gorge and St Michael's Church at Brentor were all beautiful places within very easy driving distance, although many of the roads are narrow. Everything was spotlessly clean. With no internet or mobile signal we enjoyed our isolation. If you walk up the path across the stream and turn left you can soon pick up signal.see more
The Old National School, Dartmoor National Park
Beautiful cottage, stunning locale, a wonderful break away.

We had a really marvellous time staying six nights at the Old National School in October 2020. The first thing to say is that the photos currently shown on this website really don't do it justice. It is a really charming and atmospheric cottage that manages at the same time to be both very cosy and surprisingly roomy. The mezzanine above the dining/breakfast room has a gorgeous antique wooden balcony, and the enormous living room has both a spectacular high vaulted ceiling and beautiful wainscotting around its walls. As an old house (18th century?) it was a little chilly in October but the house is appointed with modern underfloor heating, radiators and woodburners - in spite of near-freezing temperatures outside we were very comfortable inside wearing only a single light layer and barefoot. The kitchen is well-fitted with four electric rings and a good medium-size oven, and plenty of utensils and cooking equipment (including an excellent crock-pot) are available for use. The house also has a wll-maintained garden and several rooms are built around and open onto an interior open-air courtyard; neither of these got much use during our visit given the October chill, but they presumably will be lovely at warmer times of the year. There is wireless internet on one side of the house. Katie the hostess was very helpful both in advance, fielding questions, and during our stay: a selection of treats and basic essentials had been provided, laid out ready for our arrival (enough to last a couple of days). They were also very prompt and helpful dealing with a broken light and in assisting to track down an astray parcel we had delivered to the cottage during our stay. The locale itself is stunning: up on Dartmoor proper, it has wild moorland and some pastoral landscape of the sort one reads about in The Hound of the Baskervilles. Indeed the old manor house next door looks and feels like a building oit of a gothic novel. There is also a beautiful small medieval church with a very evocative graveyard just behind the cottage. Our group spent a very plesant norning exploring it in-depth, examing the architechture, stones and art: just next dooe, it is really worth a visit. We didn't manage to get out to any local pubs, but there are some within a ten-minute drive. Local villages with shops and the edge of Tavistocl itself are within an easy 10-15 minute drive. A special note must be made about the wildlife - if, like me, you weren't familiar with Dartmoor you will be in for a plesant surpise on meeting the wild ponies and free-roaming sheep that wander the lanes and come right up to the house. There is also a kennels next door, and the occasional burst of baying lends further to the atmosphere (although we could not hear the dogs from inside). Overall we found the Old National School an excellent venue and I would recommend it to anyone looking for a characterful locale for a break away.see more
