Description from owner


The church was converted into residential dwellings in 1994 and consists of three houses - the Tower, the Nave and the Chancel. The Chancel still retains the large East window just beyond the alter area, which is now one of the many features adorning this unique house.

Much of the original stained glass has been retained in all the windows, especially the magnificent East window, which overlooks the Purbeck Hills.

We had a lovely time during our stay at the Chancel. It is a very spacious accomodation, with lots of privacy. We had the best weather so enjoyed the garden also.

'The Chancel' is a fantastic hideaway property perfect for exploring beautiful Dorset. The house is tucked off the beaten track away from busy town centres and is a perfect place for getting away from it all. There are several towns within short driving distance with supermarkets and pubs and the beach at Lulworth Cove is less than 10 minutes drive away, Corfe Castle is about 15 minutes away and you can be in the large resort town of Weymouth in about half hour. The Chancel is superbly equipped with all the pots, pans and crockery you would ever need, a dishwasher makes cleaning up a breeze and having young children we found the washing machine invaluable - there was even washing powder in the cupboards! The comfy sitting room has a pair of uber comfy sofas perfect for lounging on and watching the TV or a DVD ( plenty of films to choose from if you had a rainy day or just wanted a day in ) We found the hi fi system particularly useful as I personally like to have music on pretty much constantly! The chancel has 2 lovely clean bath rooms and a pair of power showers - we were very thankful of those as it was 34 degrees outside during our stay. In fact the only thing we can think of that we would have benefited from would have been a couple of electric fans. We will certainly be visiting again next year if not sooner and will be booking The Chancel again for our stay. We must admit it was a little eery walking through the old church yard to get to the house but we're happy to report no spooky goings on! - just adds to the charm of the place and I'm sure it has a fascinating history. ( the neighbours are dead quiet!! - sorry I couldn't resist! )

Our stay at the Chancel was fabulous! The property is picturesque, comfortable and outfitted like our home - not a rental. The gardens, where we spent many afternoons, are both peaceful and beautiful. The interior tastefully incorporates the stained glass windows, carved stone arches and vaulted ceilings of the original 16th century church (moved to its current location in the 19th century). It's conveniently situated within easy driving distance to many interesting towns (Lyme Regis, Swanage, Wareham, Dorchester, Netherbury, etc.) Don't miss breakfast at the schoolhouse in Moreton, fossil hunting along the Jurassic Coast, and touring the ghost town of Tyneham. The sunset from Purbeck Hill is fantastic. And, for military fans, the Bovington Tank Museum is a must. (Have a care, as the Army actually trains its tank drivers on nearby public roads.) We've traveled from the U.S. to visited England and Scotland many times. This was the most charming and relaxing trip yet. We plan to return to savor it again very soon.

Great holiday let. The property has great character and is very well furnished. It is very clean and extremely well equipped. Wonderful location with Corfe Castle, Swanage, Monkey World, Knoll Beach, etc, all 20 minutes away or less. Highly recommended.

'The Chancel' is a conversion of a church which went out of service in the 1980's. You immediately get a sense of what awaits you inside when parking your car ... right next to a beautifuly maintained graveyard! The childrens' imaginations begin working immediately and their excitement is infectious. The interior doesn't disappoint, being very clean, well organised and homely, with original features such as stained glass and inscriptions being retained. There are two other properties in use - 'the Nave' and 'the Tower' - all part of the same building. The location is excellent for the beaches at Studland and Swanage, and medieval Corfe Castle is an easy drive away. There's lots of space for children and it's a great base for exploring Dorset. And you can explore the graveyard after dark...if you dare!
