The England region

Lyme Regis, known as 'The Pearl of Dorset', is located on the beautiful and unspoilt 'Jurassic Coast', a World Heritage Site. An area of outstanding natural beauty nestled between Dorset and Devon on the South West Coast of England.

Breathtaking scenery, historic buildings, picturesque Cobb harbour, sandy beach and unspoilt surrounding countryside make Lyme Regis a popular holiday resort for all seasons .

The town centre has good independent shops, galleries, cafes, restaurants, pubs, cinema, museum and even an aquarium just waiting to be explored. There is a bus service to the main line railway station at Axminster (6 miles). We also have a sailing club, bowls, golf course, and theatre.

Lyme Regis

Lyme Regis is well known for its centuries old harbour and wall, known as "The Cobb", featured in Jane Austen's novel Persuasion, and in The French Lieutenant's Woman, a novel by John Fowles, as well as the 1981 film of the same name, which was partly filmed in Lyme Regis.

The town was also home to Mary Anning, one of the earliest discoverers of dinosaurs and other prehistoric reptile remains. It holds an annual Mary Anning Day and Lyme Regis Fossil Festival. A fossil of the world's largest moth was discovered in 1966 at Lyme Regis.

Lyme has had some famous human visitors too. It is believed that Jane Austen stayed in Hiscott’s Boarding house on the same site as the Three Cups Hotel, in 1804. The hotel has played host to Alfred Lord Tennyson, Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, Hilaire Belloc, G.K. Chesterton and J. R. R. Tolkien, who spent several holidays there. In 1944 General Eisenhower delivered an important briefing before D-Day to senior Allied officers in the first floor lounge.

There are plenty of interesting walks around Lyme and the surrounding countryside. One of the most accessible walks runs along the river Lym and ends up in Uplyme across the border in Devon. Uplyme has a pub and filling station with a shop and post office.

“Beautiful retreat”

Reviewed 28 Dec 2016

We stayed at Sundial House for a family Xmas holiday. The location is perfect for all the pubs & shops, with simply stunning views day & night of the sea & harbour. We all loved watching the sun rise every morning from the kitchen/dining room. We had a mixture of ages with us & our older generation did find the amount of stairs a little challenging but we knew that when booking. There is a bedroom through a bathroom which is a bit awkward but as we were all family it was okay. Overall we had a brilliant time & loved being the envy of all the passers by. Lyme Regis is beautiful & had an excellent choice of pubs & restaurants. We enjoyed great meals at The Royal Standard & The Harbour Inn. We will happily visit again & again!

“Amazing location and fabulous property”

Reviewed 27 Aug 2015

Lyme Regis has a huge family, nostgic meaning to the family so it was wonderful to go back. This house is in the best location - right on the sea front. A great base for beach, pottering and people watching. The house is narrow and tall so be prepared for steep stair climbs and the bedroom configuration will not suit everyone but its such an interesting house - people do stop and stare. The interior is very cosy with plenty of entertaining space. The owner Mark was also incredibly helpful - I cant wait to go back!!
