Others, however, prefer to relax, explore the Garrique woods, or climb the hills behind the cottage or the mountains opposite.

The Scotland region

Stirlingshire lies at the heart of historic Scotland, with royal and romantic Stirling Castle crowning a thriving visitor friendly city. Those interested in history and drama can spend hours wandering around the Castle battlements, state rooms and dungeons, then wander down to Argyll's Lodging, the Church of the Holy Rude and the rest of the Old Town. The landscape west of Stirling encompasses The Trossachs mountain range, the Queen Elizabeth Forest Park, the bonny banks of Loch Lomond and the Lake of Menteith, the only lake in Scotland - which is a favourite with fishermen.
Places to visit around Stirling include the Bannockburn Memorial (historic 1214 victory over England), Wallace Monument (Braveheart!), Dunblane Cathedral, Doune Castle , the Falkirk Wheel ( linking the refurbished Forth/Clyde and Union Canals, with easy walking or cycling along the tow paths), Callander House and Park (a massive Georgian mansion built astride the Antonine Wall, which was the Romans northern frontier), and the Rob Roy Centre at Callander.

Kippen

Garrique Cottage is only 15 minutes drive from Stirling, and less than an hour by car from Edinburgh, Glasgow and Perth, with their many and varied attractions. Nearer to home, Blair Drummond Safari and Adventure Park the Briarlands Childrens Farm Park, and the Deanston Distillery Visitor Centre are all less than five miles away, as are Kippen, Gargunnock and Fintry with their choice of good pubs, cafes and village shops. Gleneagles Hotel, with its spa, championship golf courses, and Michelin starred restaurant, and the Glengoyne Distillery Visitor Centre are around forty minutes away, and Falkland Palace, Scone Palace, and Drummond Castle Gardens are within an hours drive. Many visitors have made day trips to Inverness, St Andrews, Inverary (with its castle and jail), and even Iona.
The ski slopes of Glenshee and GlenCoe can be reached within about two hours, and the Peak Centre in Stirling offers three swimming pools, a climbing wall and an ice rink.

“Fabulous family holiday yet again!”

Reviewed 3 Nov 2016

This was our 3rd visit to Garrique with our three young children (now 8, 5 and 2). The cottage is perfectly located to explore the beautiful Trossachs and Loch Lomond area as well as being close to all the amenities you need when travelling with young ones. We revisited our favourite tearoom- Mhor Bread, in Callander and also managed to climb Ben A'an with the children. This is a steep path but we had fine weather and the view from the top over Loch Katrine is well worth the effort. Bracklinn Falls is a good little outing too- an easy walk to a beautiful spot. We also discovered Dunblane and the Riverside coffee house. We also walked through the forest from Callander to Loch Ruskie, As it was my daughters birthday we spent a day at Blair Drummond safari park- which although seemed quite expensive before hand was well worth the money and we could have stayed longer had the children had more energy. Our only disappointing day was our visit to the Falkirk Wheel which was far too expensive to ride on and we only stayed because of the play area. Maybe on a summers day it would be a bit better. We loved revisiting old haunts and adventuring into the garden and forest at the rear of the property. The cottage is cosy, comfortable and very well equipped- a home away from home: books, games, good dvds, plenty of pillows and blankets for those chilly evenings, ample fridge and freezer space (!) We can't wait to come back. Thank you.

Thank you very much for your lovely review. Come back soon. Fiona

“Peaceful retreat”

Reviewed 19 Oct 2016

We stayed here for a long weekend and it was simply lovely. Despite the traditional dismal Scottish weather, we relaxed by the log burner and chilled out looking at the scenery. We managed a game of Tennis in the fabulous court and a wander around the woods - plenty of acres to explore! The cottage is well equipped with everything you need and although out in the countryside, in a perfect location for accessing local attractions and eateries if you wish. You need a car! Fiona is a perfect host, looking to meet your needs.

Thank you very much for visiting us. It was the worst weekend for weather we have had for a long time, but you always looked as if you were having fun. Great to see the tennis court in use, and to know you explored the woods. Come back soon, Fiona

“Fantastic Family Holiday”

Reviewed 26 Sep 2016

Garrique Cottage sounds too good to be true, Beautiful cottage in a picturesque location, plenty of activities close by, reasonable price, great host and a private tennis court thrown in for good measure. Well, it lives to all expectations, book before you miss your chance to stay here! If you fancy a few excursions, its' only an hour from Edinburgh and Fort William is just a stunning 2 hours drive away. If you want to stay close by then Stirling castle is a fabulous place to visit and is just down the road. Loch Lomond & The Trossachs National Park is half an hour away. For a great day out for the whole family make sure you visit Castle Rednock, we went Pony Trekking and whizzed round on off-road segways, the price was very reasonable too. Fiona was a great host and gave us many ideas for activities, we were a bit spoilt for choice and wish we could of stayed longer. If you want to be really lazy and not drive anywhere, the cottage is surrounded by woods and there are several walks to go on, the kids loved running around and exploring. Or you could just have a bbq while watching the stunning sunsets over the hills. Finally, don't forget to bring a tennis racket even if you don't really play. Its a luxury that we took full advantage of every day at breakfast. You'll love running around breathing the fresh air whilst enjoying the amazing views.

Thank you so much for your review. It was great to see you all having fun on our tennis court and to hear about your adventures further afield. Come back soon. Fiona

“Fabulous holiday destination with great hosts.”

Reviewed 20 May 2013

My teenage daughters and I stayed at Garrique Cottage in January 2013. The farmhouse is beautiful with every amenity you could wish for. The scenery is breathtaking and yet you are only 10 - 15 minutes from Stirling - a good sized town for shopping and also the Wallace Monument. Using this as a base we travelled to Loch Lomond, Loch Ness, Edinburgh, Glasgow and Stirling. All up we enjoyed a week at the farmhouse and LOVED every single minute of our time there. The hosts, Nander and Fiona, are so helpful and generous with their time and knowledge that you cannot go wrong. As a family we voted this the favourite part of our extended holiday that included California, London, Wales and Rome. As there was snow when we were there, we can recommend the farmhouse as a winter or summer destination. You'll love it!!

“Great Cottage - Stunning Setting”

Reviewed 8 Apr 2013

The cottage was great. Accommodation was clean and just as described. Loved the kitchen/dining/living area. The cottage was lovely and warm and the wood burner great to cosy in front of at night. We were a family of 4 adults and 3 children and there was ample space for us and all the stuff we brought as well. The kitchen was well equipped. the owner was friendly and helpful. One of the main features was the stunning views! Wow! The tennis court was particularly great and there can't be many courts with a view like that - the kids loved it and spent lots of time playing on it.. Will definately be back.

“Beautiful cottage”

Reviewed 13 Feb 2013

We have recently returned from a 5 day stay at La Garrique. On arrival the cottage was welcoming and warm with many basic necessities such as tea, coffee etc provided - unusual for self catering. There were also some lovely touches such as toiletries and tissues provided for our use. Our family consisted of Grandparents, parents and children of 1 and 3 years old. The house was more that adequate for this mix: spacious and comfortable, and with two bathrooms at our disposal. The general cleanliness and condition of the cottage was immaculate. The garden was lovely and extended into some beautiful walks into the woods. We also made a longer walk of 4 miles by footpath to Kippen, which although muddy and uneven underfoot, was perfectly possible with the correct footwear. The surrounding area is beautifully scenic and the cottage is a hub for visiting many famous landmarks both historic and modern. Stirling is only 15 minutes drive away and we were fortunate enough to visit on 'Farmer's Market Day'. I would have no hesitation in recommending this cottage to others and would certainly consider returning at some point in the future.

“Fabulous cottage in fabulous location!”

Great cottage, in very peaceful location with a beautiful vista, great size and well appointed. Easy access to Stirling and loch Lomand, with motorway also close by for Glasgow and Edinburgh. Would stay again without hesitation.

“A truly delightful Cottage in a wonderful setting”

Reviewed 26 Sep 2012

We have recently returned from a weeks holiday in this delightful cottage and promptly booked a return visit for next year! A very comfortable and well equipped cottage and kept to a high standard. The views are sensational and in an ideal position for visiting Stirling and the Trossachs, and we also visited Fort William and the surrounding area. Can't wait to return next year!!

“A true home from home in the most fantastic setting!!!!!”

Reviewed 2 Sep 2012

The cottage is in a beautiful location off the beaten track but perfectly position for easy access to Stirling, Edinburgh and Glasgow. The accommodation was clean, spacious and very well equipped with all you could need to feel like you are at home. The beds were very very comfortable. We were a family of 5 (husband, wife, daughter - age 15, son - age 9 and granny). All of us loved the cottage, the tennis court and the free range eggs!! Walkers paradise. We found the information provided very useful and visited many of the suggested sites. Can't wait to be back.

“Lovely family cottage in a secluded spot with lovely views. Great base for exploring Trossachs”

Reviewed 15 Jan 2012

We stayed here in November 2011 for a week. The cottage has fantastic views to the north as it is in an elevated position about 2 miles off the A811. First impressions were excellent - the cottage has a lovely open plan kitchen / dining room with sofa which suited us down to the ground with 2 small children to keep an eye on. The kitchen was really well stocked and had everything you would need. Separate living room with log fire was a real treat and nice to spend the evenings in. The location was everything we hoped for - really secluded, yet with an easy drive to sterling or across to Loch Lomand and the Trossachs. Would definitely recommend this and hope to return in the near future.
