Description

The Mill House is a beautiful detached Georgian farmhouse situated in a quiet country lane. It has spectacular views across fields to the downs and is a ten-minute walk from the sea at Brighstone Bay. Across the lane is a pleasant ten-minute walk beside the stream, which leads to the picturesque village of Brighstone with its village shops, family friendly pub, gift shop, library, children’s play park and National Trust Museum. Set in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, it is a marvellous walking and cycling area and footpaths can be followed from The Mill House to join coastal and inland paths leading to nearby beaches, the Tennyson Trail and the Needles. The sandy bays of Compton, Totland and Colwell are a short drive away as are the small towns of Freshwater and Yarmouth offering a choice of restaurants and shops. Children of all ages are welcome, as are well behaved pets (by arrangement).

The Mill House has been renovated to a very high standard with many original features retained and has been awarded the VisitEngland five star Gold award since 2009. The property is a comfortable, well equipped, spacious home from home for families/friends holidaying or celebrating a special occasion together. The house is centrally heated and has a combination of fitted carpets, rugs, stone and wooden floors and almost all the rooms have open rural views.

The property benefits from a beautiful handmade kitchen with AGA and accommodates up to 12 guests in four double rooms with king sized beds (one with four poster bed) and two twin rooms (one with full sized bunk beds and one ground floor bedroom with two single beds) with three bathrooms (one family bathroom with corner bath and shower cubicle, one bathroom with roll top bath and one downstairs bathroom with shower cubicle). There is an elegant sitting room with an open fireplace, grand piano, stereo system and comfortable seating and a snug sitting room with sofa, chairs and bean bags, a wood burning stove, colour television, DVD player (please bring your own DVDs) and a selection of family games, children’s toys and books. The dining room with views over the garden is furnished with solid oak furniture and also has a wood burning stove.

The Mill House is surrounded by large, private and enclosed gardens with mature shrubs, trees and large lawned areas. There is a patio area with garden furniture and a gas BBQ for guests’ use. There is ample parking to the rear of the property.

Our changeover day is usually a Saturday arriving at 4 pm and departing by 10 am, however, outside the summer months, we are happy to accept short breaks and can be flexible with regards to arrival and departure. A Welcome pack is provided on arrival, there are hairdryers in every bedroom and Wifi is free of charge.

A Welcome Pack is provided on arrival, locally sourced where possible. A wooden cot, highchair, and two stair gates are also available along with children's cutlery, plates, cups and bowls and an array of books, toys, games and bucket and spades.

Children can relax in the snug sitting room complete with games, books, TV and DVD Player whilst adults can unwind in the comfort of the more elegant sitting room with open fireplace, grand piano and stereo system. Both the snug and dining room also benefit from wood burning stoves which add extra warmth during the colder months.The kitchen is fitted with two tall fridge/freezers as well as an AGA, electric fan oven, ceramic hob and built in microwave and dishwasher. A separate utility area houses a washing machine and a tumble dryer with large sink and plenty of storage.

Garden furniture and gas BBQ are provided in the private, mature, enclosed gardens. There is ample parking of several cars at the rear of the property accessed via a five-bar gate.

Getting around

I would recommend bringing your car to the Isle of Wight but if that's not an option, there is a regular bus service from Brighstone and plenty of local taxi firms.

“We couldn't have found a better property on the island”

We were expecting a welcome pack based on the reviews we read before our arrival but it exceeded our expectations - the hot cross buns were great and the selection of Easter chocolate was a lovely surprise. We felt very much at home straight away. The kitchen is very well equipped and the bedrooms are all a very good size with comfortable beds. The bathrooms upstairs are very large and for us the main shower was the one we all wanted to use - excellent water pressure and loads of hot water. Outside the house the garden is large and orchard had masses of room for parking. It was a great place to run the dogs in the morning. The local shop in the centre of Brighstone is a gem. Great selection of fresh veg and other foods and very friendly staff that helped us locate the best walking in the area. The downs are spectacular once you reach the top of the hill. Cycle rides and runs are easy to find on the doorstep. It was a perfect location to celebrate our sons 21st although he did suggest that the piano could do with tuning!

The Mill House was a brilliant house to stay in with 9 adults! The house was warm and clean when we arrived and the added touches of breakfast in the fridge was much appreciated on Saturday morning. I would highly recommend this house if you are looking for a place to rent on the isle of wight. The Three Bishops pub in the village is good for food and the local village shop is a little treasure trove!

Our extended family and 2 dogs spent a wonderful week over Christmas at The Mill House and nobody wanted to leave! The layout of the house is excellent and lends itself perfectly to large groups, with a great lounge with an open fire and a snug/games room to keep the teenagers (& big kids!) in the party duly occupied. The location is great too, within walking distance of a small beach, where some of the braver members of our party took a Christmas Day dip! Within easy reach of local shops too. As well as some great blustery walks along the beach or up to see the Needles, we all spent a lot of time at the house cooking in the superbly equipped kitchen, eating together (there was a lot of eating) and playing games together - cannot recommend the Mill House highly enough as a place to spend quality family time. 10/10 from us all. We had such a great time for a New Year's Eve break at The Mill House. The house is gorgeous - beautifully decorated, well equipped, spacious and warm. There was a nice welcome pack of goodies on arrival and no issues with just having to leave the house in a tidy condition at the end. Two good walks along the coast and a trip to The Needles. Well recommended.

The Mill House is a beautiful property in a lovely setting, in easy reach of walks on the downs, local shops via a pretty footpath, a short drive to the beach, and set in spacious gardens. The rooms are all a good size and very well furnished. The dishwasher, washing machine and drier are all top of the range Miele and work superbly. There is plenty of china and cutlery, and we appreciated the large set of Denby. Two sitting rooms, one having the tv, plus a dining room, meant that our party of twelve were never crowded. There is plenty of room for parking as many cars/trailers as one could need. We ranged from 4 - 80 in ages and the house was perfect for everyone. The downstairs bedroom with shower was ideal for the disabled member of the family. The toys, games and books were much appreciated by the 4-8 year-olds. This is an exceptional house for a memorable holiday, and all our party would strongly recommend it.

I have stayed several times at the Mill House and it never disappoints. Last weekend 8 of us (4 couples) had a fabulous time celebrating our friends 50th. The Mill house is in a stunning location, surrounded by countryside, yet only a few minutes car ride from the various attractions the IOW has to offer in particular the Needles. The property is cleaned and looked after to a very high standard but most importantly it also feels very homely and welcoming. On a previous visit there were a party of 14 of us including adults and children, so the Mill House really does cater for different needs and lengths of stay and is an ideal base to explore the stunning Isle of Wight & somewhere I would not hesitate to recommend. Will be going again soon

We were a large group with ages ranging from 9 to early 80's plus a dog. The house had ample parking, comfy beds, a well equipped kitchen,cotton bed linen, fluffy towels and the two sitting rooms worked well allowing the adults and children to have time out from each other. Baked potatoes cooked in the Aga were so good we did the same again the next day. We stayed for 5 days and found more than enough to do. We would love to return one day.

We had a wonderful week at Mill House and everybody in our group thought the house was marvellous. It has a real 'family home' feel to it with large bedrooms and living rooms. Plenty of space all round and ideal for a large group or multi-generation extended family (as ours was). Lots of crockery and cutlery and other kitchen utensils makes living very easy (trouble is remembering wher everything goes!).. A lovely large garden ideal for toddlers (and older children) to play freely and safely. On the quieter side of the island but nowhere takes very long to get to. The coastline nearby is very picturesque and the beaches there are almost empty, away from the main island resorts.Close to a lovely village with good pub, bistro and very well stocked village shop (good fresh fruit/veg and bread etc). All very relaxing. We had wonderful weather all week, which always helps of course! Highly recommended.
