Loved the cottage, the river wye flowed just a few metres away behind cottage, Elan valley a 10 minute drive and Rhayader was a three minute drive with a lot of pubs and cafes and a few shops! There was an organic cafe we visited that sold 'free from' foods I think it was called wild swan...it was fab with lots of variety for people with different eating and health needs.
Elaine the owner of the Vulcan lodge cottages showed us around our cottage on first night and had a lovely bottle of wine and Welsh cakes waiting for us when we arrived!! Many thanks. We stayed in the Middleton cottage which is very roomy and full of light, three bathrooms with two beds in each room, two of the rooms had doubles and a single and other had two single beds and they were all comfy!
Having taking the kids it was great to have a proper washing facility with a proper laundrette including drying facilities! We took a walk down to the river and drove around mostly using recommendations from the cottage book, shame we forgot to sign guest book!!!!! Great views all around lots to do for kids, pony trekking at the Lion Royal trekking in Rhayader was a great experience for the kids and we had a lovely hearty meal at the Fforest Inn pub which was a half hour drive from the Vulcan lodge cottages, food was real home made and landlords very friendly, outdoor beer garden and saw a few people with pets! The Brecon Beacons national park is worth a visit for walkers and for people with kids too. We also went as far as the Henrhyd waterfalls and loved it! We were lucky enough to visit at a time when the Elan reservoirs had a public viewing day where we were allowed to go inside the dams and have a look plus learn a bit more about this beautiful feature of mid Wales! The wyeside centre for arts in Builth wells is definitely worth a visit as it's partly run by volunteers and has a lovely Cinema we had the cinema all to ourselves! See photos attached.
Sorry for the lengthy review I hope it helps someone.
Thanks Elaine for your hospitality we all loved it! My girls would love to visit again x …
Vulcan Lodge - the Woodman Holiday Cottage
A fabulous place to stay
Very impressed with this property (Woodman). One of the best equipped and presented self catering places we have stayed at. Well thought out conversion and attention to every detail has been made. We were warmly welcomed and nothing was too much trouble to make our stay as pleasant as possible. Definitely recommended in a beautiful part of mid Wales, close to Elan Valley and within easy access of Aberystwyth. Great area for cycling, walking and horse riding. …

Vulcan Lodge - the Faulkner Holiday Cottage
As good as ever...
Have been visiting this area for many years and have discovered something new every time. If you like walking, cycling, motoring, fishing, views, wildlife, food, dark night skies, history - you'll get it all around here.
Have stayed at the Vulcan Lodge ever since it was converted from an abandoned pub some years ago and have always felt it to be a 'home-from-home'. Elaine, the owner, is always available by phone and will do everything she can to ensure a pleasant stay.
Next door is a well-stocked shop/off-licence as well as a cafe serving very good food which can be eaten outside in their lovely garden.
If you want a base from which to explore the Elan Valley and Mid-Wales this is the place to stay. …
