Hartland Forest is set on the Atlantic coast of North Devon which is steeped in a tradition of smuggling and famous for its timeless fishing villages , including Clovelly which is just 5 miles away , renowned the world over for its flower strewn cottages and steep cobbled footpath falling to the 14th century harbour.

Lundy Island can be visited by boat from Clovelly or Bideford quay and is populated by just a few souls, many seals and rare puffins.

Dramatic Hartland Quay at the foot of very steep cliffs where there is a small shipwreck museum and Hartland Point further round the bay are both landmarks on the edge of this lovely village.

For garden and historic house enthusiasts visit Hartland Abbey, Tapeley House and Gardens , National Trust Arlington Court , RHS Rosemoor Gardens , Marwood Gardens and the Eden Project which is just over an hour's drive.

The Atlantic Village on the outskirts of Bideford offers retail therapy and Dartington Crystal at Torrington is worth a visit. There are many local potteries and craft studios to be found in surrounding villages.

Just a short drive along the Cornish coast is Tintagel (King Arthur legend), Port Isaac (Doc Martin is shot here) and Padstow with a lovely harbour, famous for its association with Rick Stein and a former home of Sir Walter Raleigh. Just past Padstow is Watergate Bay , home to Jamie Oliver's Fifteen restaurant, which is worth a visit, but booking is recommended in the peak season.

There are many very good local beaches and sandy too including Sandymouth Bay , Duck Pool , Bucks Mill , Bude , Northcott Mouth , Crooklets , Summerleaze and Widemouth Bay , Westward Ho! , Instow , Braunton and Saunton Sands. Surfing is very popular at many local beaches - British Surfing Association approved tuition is available at many of these including Bude and Widemouth Bay.

At Tamar Lakes there is a water sports centre offering sailing , windsurfing and canoeing . Rowing boats are also available for hire. Sea shore fishing is accessible from many places including Clovelly , Hartland Quay and Appledore and sea fishing trips go out from Clovelly. Wreck diving is available off Lundy.

A number of local stables offer horse riding along the coastal paths or cross country and the Tarka Trail is a wonderful bike riding route and there are many local lanes to explore too .

Golfers are spoilt for choice with other nearby golf courses include Bude , Holsworthy , Royal North Devon , Great Torrington , Libbaton , Highbullen and Saunton and St Mellion to name a few

There are many breathtaking walks including stretches of the Southwest Coastal Path , Tarka Country , Exmoor , Bodmin Moor and Dartmoor together with local country and woodland paths . A few local favourites are Bucks Mills , Broad Parkham , Peppercombe , Clovelly , Mouth Mill , Brownsham , Hartland Quay , Stoke , Hartland Point , Welcombe and Bude's canal and cliffs.

Around an hours drive from the lodge is the Eden Project it recreates the tropics and Mediterranean in domes so huge that one even includes a 75 foot waterfall. Combine this with visiting Lanhydrock, the Lost Gardens of Heligan and Pencarrow and you are in horticultural heaven.

Wildlife enthusiasts will enjoy the many local nature reserves and country parks which include Northam Burrows , Braunton Burrows one of Europe's largest areas of sand dunes with important plants , Kenwith Valley Nature Reserve , Tamar Lakes , Isley Marsh near Instow , Taw estuary , Brownsham near Hartland, Halsdon near Dolton, Welcombe and Marsland , Bucks and Keivills Wood , Lundy Island - 11 miles off the coast , owned by the National Trust accessible by air or sea.

"Peace"

A lot of effort has gone into the details while preserving a functional and comfortable living environment. Specifically, the:
- easy parking,
- lack of clutter/clear floorspaces,
- provision of kitchen/bathroom consumables,
- supply of towels/linen,
- actual functioning internet access,
- new appliances,
- fairly child-safe layout, and
- expansive decking
were appreciated.

There are other cabins on the site, located between forest and a golf course. The cabins are far apart enough so you can sit out and appreciate some open space and views. Then sit on the sofas and watch the evening draw in through floor to ceiling glass all around while savouring some wine.

You need a car; we like this place because it is isolated - you would not walk to a pub or shop. Nice beaches, shops, pubs, chip shops are a 10-15min drive along narrow country roads. So is Clovelly (look it up, worth a visit for families). You can't hear traffic here. Nice woods to walk around.

If you want to get away and feel isolated with your boy/girlfriend, some friends or a young family, we recommend.
