Location description from owner

The England region

There are literally dozens of beautiful walks and cycle rides right from the door within the immediate area.

For cyclists we are just a stone's throw away from The Manifold Cycle trail and the Tissington and High Peak cycle trails. There are several cycle hire shops on each trail or you are welcome to bring your own bikes. There are hundreds of quiet country lanes to cycle along and explore this beautiful part of the world.

Nearby Milldale is the start of the downstream walk to the stepping stones at Dovedale and the village of Ilam. Upstream, a quieter river side walk takes you to Hartington.

Thor's Cave rising 360ft above the river Manifold has a 60ft entrance and stunning views over the valley. It is just a short walk from the Vicarage and is one of many caves and burial mounds in the area, which have yielded ancient bones and artefacts.

Wetton Mill and the Manifold Valley are again just a short distance away. Wetton Mill is now owned by the National Trust, but once ground corn for the local community. It closed down as a mill in the mid 19th century, but there is a tea room on the site and direct access the cycle track along the Manifold Valley.

Half an hours walk will bring you to Ecton Hill, which is dotted with old lead and copper mines. The copper once mined here was so pure that is was used to make the first transatlantic telephone cable. At a small number of times of the year the mines are open to visitors, with booking through the National Trust.

Just 2 minutes stroll is the village pub The Royal Oak and we have a great selection of restaurants and pubs in the local area including The George in Alstonefield and The Devonshire Arms in Hartington - both highy recommened and both serving homemade food and good beer.

A short drive will allow you to visit some of the Peak District's historic gems and market towns such as Ashbourne, Bakewell, Matlock and Buxton.

We are ideally located to visit some of the country's favourite stately homes where many of our recent period dramas and films have been set. Visit nearby Chatsworth House, Haddon Hall, Sudbury Hall, Kedleston Hall, Calke Abbey or Hardwick Hall.

We have a great range of other things to see and do including the many bustling market towns such as Ashbourne, Bakewell and Buxton or even the nearby Alton Towers, the many limestone caves including Pooles Cavern in Buxton, as well as the famous cable car in Matlock Bath. We could go on.....

“Beautiful, comfortable, restful, cosy.”

Reviewed 17 Feb 2015

We have just returned from a very relaxing and comfortable stay at the Little Vicarage Cottage, which is a beautifully crated addition to the main house. We can vouch for the breakfast in the main house which we took advantage of on our first morning; a great start to the day. Being able to walk out in all directions across the fields from the doorstep was a big bonus. There are plenty more walking opportunities and places to visit within short driving distances - Chatsworth House, Ilam Park and Tissington Hall were on our list. There is also a good choice of pubs to eat out at in the surrounding area too, should you wish to avoid cooking - we liked the Coach and Horses at Fenny Bentley. The covering of snow on our arrival made for a very pretty scene, as we drove up the short drive from the village pub. The cottage is very well kitted out, cosy and warm, with everything we needed for our stay. Nicky was a great host - there to meet us on arrival and no "fuss"; the homemade cake and bread waiting for us in the cottage were a real treat. We enjoyed our (too short) stay immensely and would definitely come back again.

Alan & Sue Thanks very much for taking the time to write a review for us - it means a great deal to us to hear that our guests have enjoyed their stay and it was an absolute pleasure to meet you both. I am also glad that you enjoyed having breakfast cooked for you and that you managed to make the most of the many walks straight from the door - that's what holidays are all about. Thanks also for leaving the cottage so lovely and clean! Take care and we look forward to meeting you again sometime in the future. Nicky
