The Isle of Wight region
Shanklin has long been a location for family holidays, with safe sandy, Award winning, beaches and clear waters. Being on the South Eastern side of the Island The bay is sheltered from the prevailing wind by Dunnose Point, which is a stunning backdrop, with the tall cliffs of Luccombe and St. Boniface Downs beyond. Looking out to The English Channel across the bay, views extend around to the White Cliffs of Culver and Bembridge Downs.
The Island itself is designated an area of outstanding natural beauty, there are over 500 miles of well-kept footpaths and bridal ways, some great examples of which can be joined minutes from our driveway. The island boasts 8 golf courses, so plenty to choose from if golf is your thing! If history is more your style there are many Castles, Monuments, Manor Houses, Royal Residence & Ancient Burial Grounds. There is lots to see for the budding paleontologist, the Island Recently was given the title of Dinosaur Island, being one of Europe's finest sites for dinosaur remains, you can even join an organized dinosaur walk and see what you can find! From the Cottages you can explore the local stunning coastal and country walks, stroll down to the beach, or take in the natural beauty of Shanklin Chine. The Old Village is also only minutes away, as are the nearby parks, pubs, gift shops, and thatched tea rooms. The traditional seaside amusements of the esplanade are all within a short walk. Bicycles are easy to hire or maybe try out some of the watersports available on small hope beach, (far end of shanklin beach)
Shanklin has many festivals that go on throughout the year. One of the highlights is Shanklin Regatta which has been running for over 160 years ! This is held usually in mid August and starts with a sand castle competition, many fun things for all ages go on throughout the day and into the evening with an amazing firework display that lights up the whole bay as a grand finale. There is also carnival week in early August, organized walks during the Island walking festival, a Christmas festival, live bands playing in the park and always something to see at Shanklin Theatre.
The Isle of Wight with its relaxed atmosphere and old world charm is a great place to enjoy and unwind so whether its lazy days on the beach, or adventure you crave, the Isle of Wight has it all.
The heart of Shanklin Old Village is only a few minutes walk away from the cottage, with its pretty thatched cottages, tea rooms, restaurants and pubs, a great pit stop on the way back from the beach !. A ten minute walk will take you to the traditional English seaside town of Shanklin with its many amenities. A ten minute walk will also take you onto Appley Beach, the quieter end of Shanklin's beach, with its shallow waters and wide sandy beach. Or you can head out via the Landslip / Under cliff and discover your own secluded bays, some of which were historically used by the Islands notorious smugglers!
