Located on the outskirts of Great Totham near the historic market town of Maldon, our barn offers the perfect place for a family holiday, romantic break, rural retreat and outdoor activities.

Set in open arable farmland to the front and rear, there is ample off road parking, a large shared garden at the front and separate gardens at the rear. There is a play area for children.


The Barley Barn is one of four barns, collectively known as Jepcrack's Barn Self Catering. We have a one bedroom barn, two three bedroom barns and a four bedroom barn, all with en-suite or separate bathrooms.

They be rented separately or collectively for up to 31 guests.

Perfect for romantic getaways, family gatherings and walking holidays, Hen Parties and Weddings. We welcome well behaved animals. Please inquire or see us on We Accept Pets.


We can help to plan your Hen party! From a quiet relaxing break or a mixture of quiet times and fun activities, we have a plan to suit you!

A range of local companies can provide services including: a range of beauty treatments from professional therapists, Belly dancing (or other types) of dancing lessons, an Italian meal with wine tasting and pasta making or a limo to a club in nearby Chelmsford or Brentwood.


We are conveniently situated near the wedding venues of Captains Wood Barns,. Forrester Park, Faulty Manor, Braxted Park, Layer Marney Tower and Five Lakes.



The Barley Barn has an open plan lounge, dining area and kitchen area.

The kitchen has a fridge freezer, dishwasher and washing machine. The long wooden table can comfortably seat eight guests. High chairs are available. The kitchen is well stocked with pots, pans and utensils, a slow cooker and heated buffet server. Dishwasher tablets, washing up liquid supplied.

There are three bedrooms, sleeping 6 guests. The master bedroom is downstairs and is very spacious. There is a large French wardrobe, dressing table, full length mirror and a hairdryer. There is a sofa bed that can be set up as a small double (additional guest fees apply). The sofa bed is suitable for 2 children or 1 large adult.

The marble en - suite has a heated towel rail, jacuzzi bath with shower above.

On the ground floor is also a small bedroom which has two single beds. There is a bathroom opposite which has been recently renovated and has a shower, toilet and vanity unit.

Upstairs the third bedroom is a king size with en-suite, comprising of toilet, hand basin, vanity unit, heated towel rail. A single pull out bed in this room is available in this room at a small additional cost.

The living area has a huge brick fireplace with a wood burning stove and vaulted ceiling. In the cooler months we provide a large basket of logs for the wood burner. There are comfortable leather sofas, with seating for 8 people. There is a small double sofa bed in the lounge (same size as master bedroom) that can be supplied at a small additional cost.


The back barn doors open out onto a garden, patio and BBQ area which overlooks arable farmland. There is a garden table, outdoor seating for 8 and additional sun chairs and a coal BBQ. At the front there is a large lawned area and private off road parking. We have bikes available to explore the area and a climbing frame with swings and slide. The secluded garden area at the rear is perfect for alfresco dining or evening drinks while watching the sun go down. You may be lucky and catch sight of Muntjack deer or owls and it is a great spot for bird watching. There are no street lights, so for those who enjoy star gazing, bring your binoculars or telescope.


There are 4 separate footpaths with public right of way for ramblers and dog walkers. There are numerous minor roads, including the one which runs to the front of the property that are great for jogging or cycling enthusiasts. There is a village store which is convenient for freshly baked bread, groceries, newspapers and general supplies. There are two public houses serving meals in the village within walking distance, and numerous country pubs and restaurants within a short drive.

Maldon and Heybridge Basin are great places to explore and have a meal out. Layer Marney Tower, Colchester Zoo, Colchester Castle, Chigborough Fisheries and Cressing Temple Barns are close by. Chelmsford, Colchester, Brentwood and Braintree's Shopping Outlet are easy to reach. Beaches at Frinton-on-Sea, Clacton and Suffolk can be reached on the A12.

The barns are an ideal place to stay for guests at weddings held at Braxted Park, Vaulty Manor, Prested Hall, Layer Marney Tower, Crabbs Barn and Five Lakes.

Check in is flexible from Monday to Friday. Please enquire for late availability / Saturday check in. Sorry we may not be able to accept bookings starting from Sunday. Weekends are priced as 3 nights.

A rural location that is a pleasant 10 minute walk or a couple of minutes drive to the pubs and shop. Heating is electric central heating and log burning stove. Constant hot water is available however groups should bear in mind that the boiler will need to re-heat between baths / showers.

The internet is reliable in the main living area but due to the rural location can be slow and is unsuitable for gaming and streaming.

The Barley Barn at Jepcrack's comprises of an open plan lounge, dining area and kitchen.

The stunning, ground floor master bedroom has a vaulted ceiling, beams, exposed brickwork, a super king sized antique French bed and dressing table. There is a full length mirror and hairdryer. The en-suite is luxurious with a jacuzzi bath, shower above and vanity unit. For a family of 3 or 4 guests, the sofa bed in this room can be set up for a small additional cost.

There are a further two bedrooms. The spacious upstairs bedroom has a king size bed, ample storage space for clothes and a full length mirror. The en-suite has a bath, shower above, toilet and vanity unit. For one additional guest, a foldaway bed can be set up in this room for a small additional cost. The third bedroom on the ground floor and has views across farmers fields to the rear. This is a small bedroom with two single beds, a wardrobe a cupboarrd. Opposite is a newly refurbished bathroom with large shower, vanity unit, mirror with lights and Bluetooth and toilet We supply bedding, quality linen, towels and bath mats.

For bookings requiring additional guests there is a small additional charge to cover the cost of linen, bedding and towels.

The kitchen, dining area and lounge are open plan, making it great for entertaining. The kitchen is well equipped and has a full size fridge freezer, ceramic hob and fan oven. It

includes a coffee maker, dishwasher, microwave and washing machine. The dining table seats 8 people very comfortably.

The lounge has a fireplace with wood burning stove. In the cooler months the fire is set up ready for your arrival and we provide an initial supply of firewood.

There is a 42 inch television with freeview and a DVD player. Free Wi-fi is available.

From the lounge, barn doors open out onto the patio and garden area at the rear where you will find a patio table, chairs and a coal BBQ. There is a rotary washing line in the garden area.

We have a range of bicycles, a climbing frame, slide and swings. Our guests will be given fresh eggs from our chickens when available.

2 well behaved dogs are welcome for a small charge.

Barley Barn was perfect for our family of 5 adults and 3 children. The play area & bicycles kept both children and adults busy and the location is beautiful , being very quiet but not remote from local facilities. We had a full on week visiting Walton-on -the Naze, Mersea, Heybridge Basin, Colchester Zoo and Promenade Park in Maldon Which offers so much for families. Carmel was most helpful and nearby if we needed anything.

We stayed in Barley Barn, which was spotless and spacious with excellent outdoor space, the children loved the outdoor climbing frame, swings & slide. There are Chickens in a coup and the fresh eggs delivered was an added bonus. The local pub was a thirty minute walk through the country lanes and Heybridge Basin & Mersea Island were a short drive away. The owner Carmel was lovely and helpful, we will definitely be looking to book again next year for a restful break.

We stayed Friday-Monday at the Barley barn and it was a wonderful stay. The barn was spotlessly clean and extremely well equipped. It felt home from home as soon as we walked through the door. Perfectly decorated and just very comfy. The lovely large dinning area meant us 6 adults and 2 toddlers could comfortably fit around together for a nice meal as well as all fitting around the fire and tv in the evening with plenty of room. The dogs loved their surroundings being free to roam without fear of any traffic or danger. There's lots of supermarkets in a short car journeys distance. The promanade is also only a short way by car. Location is perfect. There are even a small supply of books/DVDs incase of a rainy day. We had a wonderful stay and are already thinking about our next trip back. Thank you very much for having us!
