“Excellent base on Orkney in a well appointed, comfortable apartment.” Dounby is well placed on Mainland being a short car journey from all the well known sites. The apartment is spotlessly clean and combines comfort and practicality. Kay made us feel very welcome and the fresh flowers and welcome pack of goodies were much appreciated. We were offered (and accepted) a daily email update about What's On in Orkney which was invaluable and meant we were able to attend an excellent lecture on Sea Eagles which we otherwise wouldn't have known about. It also included details on when the big cruise liners were in so we could avoid the towns on those days.
Thoroughly enjoyed visiting The Tomb of the Eagles; Skara Brae, The Ring of Brodgar and the Stones of Stenness; The Broch of Gurness and The Sands of Evie were a particular favourite; Yesnaby; Cuween chambered cairn; Maes Howe (if you want to visit the interior make sure you book beforehand as they get booked up quickly) and of course Kirkwall and Stromness. The museums in these two towns were very interesting. The bird life was amazing (wish I knew more) and we saw seals at Stenness. The fossil museum is good for wet days and the cinema in Kirkwall has a different film most evenings.
The only downside was that we were prepared for it to be cold and windy...and it was. With plenty of layers on however this really didn't matter. Nine days wasn't enough!
