The Games Barn
About the home
The Games Barn, rated a 3 - star home by Tourism in England, is situated in an extremely quiet location on a 30 acre working farm in the heart of the High Weald Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty in East Sussex . The farm has a small number of animals including horses, sheep, pigs , chickens and ducks and includes a stream with weir and ponds. The peaceful setting is ideal for those wanting to get away from it all in the middle of the countryside, but is just 2km from pubs, restaurants, shops etc. The excellent beaches of the south coast are all easily accessible and Ashdown Forest with its wonderful walks and cycle tracks is just 10 minutes away.
The barn is also very suitable for family holidays with young children who can enjoy looking after the animals, collecting the eggs, feeding the pigs etc - all help gratefully received! Please note however that some areas of the farm are potentially unsafe for young unsupervised children.
The flexible accommodation makes it ideal for family reunions and we are very happy to provide extra bedding so you can invite different friends to stay with you at different times (up to a maximum of 8 on any night).
The barn has full mobility facilities including a wet room with sit down shower and hand rails etc for the toilet area. There is level parking with a ramp up to the bungalow. The main doors (front and back) are double size patio doors which open fully. There is a slight threshold on these doors (approx 2 inches) but otherwise once in the barn everything is on one level with no steps. Please note the kitchen is a standard size and does not have low work tops for wheelchair users. However, we can provide a microwave oven, kettle etc at a low level on request. All power points in all rooms are approx 2 feet from the floor and the furniture is easily rearranged to accommodate specific special needs - please contact us for more information. We can provide an Access Statement containing more specific details including rooom sizes etc on request.
There is ample secure parking space for cars for able bodies users in addition to the disabled space.
Baby sitting and cleaning are available at an extra charge but please note the Barn is thoroughly cleaned prior to your arrival. Farm produce can be bought including eggs , pork and lamb.
A maximum of 2 pets are welcome provided they are well behaved and house trained.
In 2010 and 2011 the Barn proved extremely popular. It was fully occupied (other than the odd day between bookings) from mid June through to mid September and for Christmas and New Year, so to avoid disappointment we would encourage you to book early for any 2012 holidays.

A Big thanks to Fred and Madaline for making our stay enjoyable. It is a lovely place to stay and loads to explore. We were a party of 7 and the age ranged from 94 down to 13, plus 2 dogs and everyone was happy. The disabled facilities are very good. We had a fantastic Christmas morning all sat round the kitchen table preparing the dinner; it was everything we were looking for! You can really relax in the spacious quiet Barn, loads of games to play too. We would highly recommend a visit to the Carpenters Arms in Mayfield, who welcomed us with our 2 dogs, we sat in front of a roaring log fire, it was lovely. We will definitely try to go back for another visit and would recommend it whole heartedly, if you are looking for a quiet break in lovely surroundings. Peter and Sarah Response: Thanks so much for this review - it is great to know that our Barn suits such a wide age range. We hope to see you all again sometime soon. |

We found The Games Barn very easily, Madeleine having provided excellent detailed directions to the property (the Sat Nav doesn't quite get you there) down to every bend and turn in the road. As we drove up to The Games Barn Madeleine was waiting to greet us with smiles and welcomes along with her gorgeous Border Collie Dog, Chewo who was very pleased to see us. She promptly took us into the Games Barn and gave us a tour. it was spotlessly clean, bright and airy. She also gave us directions to the local village and another nearby neighbouring village incase we wanted to go and get something to eat (which we did later that evening). Once we'd unloaded the car we were asked if we'd like to meet the animals and see the rest of the farm. We very eagerly said yes. We were not disappointed. It was breath-taking. The animals were well loved and cared for and have an abundance of space to live in. After we were shown around the farm, Madeleine left us to relax and enjoy ourselves. The following day we walked to Mayfield Village. It's very quaint with various cafes, gift-shops etc, quite surprising and lovely for what is basically 1 road. We chose to return using the public footpath cut through but somehow managed to get ourselves lost but a hasty call to Madeleine soon had us heading in the right direction again. It's a lovely, scenic walk but I wouldn't recommend wearing flip-flops or the like as you walk through long grass and woodland, and it took us approx 20 mins in total (excluding our own detour!). We spent a long weekend here and totally relaxed. I have to admit that we didn't venture out any further but this was because we were more than content to stay at the farm. It was a weekend away to unwind and we did just that. Madeleine and Fred were great hosts and they were often on hand for us should we need anything. Nothing was too much trouble and they could easily be found, even telling us when they were going off-site and another time when they were checking on a ewe in the furthest field. The Games Barn is very well equipped and very comfortable. There is a rather unkind feedback post on here that I have to say, I totally disagree with. The bed linen was crisp and clean, the beds comfortable, the wetrooms were clean (no smell whatsoever) and overall it was very comfortable. Very easy to live in. Home is home and over the years you build up all of what are deemed as your necessities. We found the Games Barn to have all that was needed for our time there, we didn't 'miss' anything. Our expectations were all met perfectly. I have stayed in a number of self catering apartments and this one was by far the best. All places I have stayed in have an arrival and departure time, to expect to deviate from this is unacceptable - a hotel would charge if you didn't vacate by their required time! The property is situated in stunning grounds and is extremely peaceful. We took many photos but when we look at them it just doesn't do it justice. I absolutely loved every minute as did my mum and sister. We didn't want to leave. My recommendation would be to stop off somewhere en-route to the farm to buy food for an evening meal as personally, we were a bit daunted at having to find our way by car in the dark (no street lights) to the nearby village on the first night (it's not walkable in the dark). But this is a city person's opinion and one who has no sense of direction :-) I will definitely be returning again, as will my Mum and sister. It feels like we found a secret paradise and we are very grateful to Madeleine and Fred for allowing us to share their farm and grounds with them. Overall a truely fantastic weekend away with very lovely hosts. Thank-you both. Response: Thank you so much for this lovely review. We are delighted that your stay was so special as we strive to achieve that for all our guests. We greatly enjoyed your company and are very pleased that our farm, as well as the Barn, was such a success for you. We look forward to welcoming you back next year sometime. |

We visited the Games barn as a family of 8 made up of 3 generations. Fred & Madeleine were most welcoming and always on hand when you needed them. We didn't use the place as a base to travel around visiting local attractions as we went there for relaxation and tranquillity which we found plenty of. The younger members of the family had a field day with the animals and plenty of board games which kept them busy. The barn itself was very spacious and with 2 bath/shower rooms made it ideal for a family of 8. We did our own cooking every day and found the kitchen well equipped. We all had a great time and would definately return in the near future . Thank you Fred & Madeleine for having made our stay a pleasant one Response: Thanks for this lovely feedback. We are very pleased that all three generations of your family enjoyed their stay and we would love to see you all here again. |
