The Dorset region

At Springfield House you are minutes away from the sea, the harbour and the beaches of Lyme Regis.

The sea is the focus of a wide range of sporting activities. Swimming and bathing are top of the list, thanks to an award-winning environmental protection scheme ensuring the waters around the town are clean and safe – a fact that also shouldn’t be lost on windsurfers, water-skiers or sailors. Check out the Sailing Club and Power Boat Club for information about becoming a temporary holiday member.

Angling is another popular option, especially down by the Cobb where you’ll see a bevy of posters advertising deep-sea trips for catching cod, conger, skate, etc. Alternatively, a quiet trip around the bay might suit you better; in which case catching mackerel is a more likely outcome. Beach casting and pier fishing are also popular.

Walkers will love to explore the National Nature Reserve at the Undercliff. This seven mile long undeveloped woodland is part of the South West Coastal Path and stretches west towards Axmouth and Seaton. Going east from Lyme, walkers can follow the same path or take the costal footpath, part of the 650 mile South West Coastal Path, towards Charmouth and to Golden Cap. At 629ft, this is the highest point on the south coast. Other dry land activities abound: golfing, bowling, pony trekking and biking are just a few of the options available.

As well as being a great place to swim and sunbathe in the summer, Lyme is a paradise for visitors all year round and many tourists come in the winter during a storm just to watch the waves crashing over The Cobb.

If you prefer a less active holiday, there are a wide range of shops, tourist attractions and restaurants to enjoy.

Lyme Regis

Easily accessible, and only three hours from London and the Midlands, Lyme Regis is away from it all, nestling in the unspoilt West Dorset countryside. Part of the Jurassic Coast World Heritage site, and surrounded by areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty, Lyme Regis, the “Pearl of Dorset”, is famous for its fossils, its historic old town, its Cobb and its beaches. And now it's a destination for food lovers, with Hix Oyster and Fish House in the town, and River Cottage HQ and Axminster Canteen both close by.

The old town, dating back to the 14th century, is an ideal place to walk and explore the local shops, art galleries, newly replanted gardens with myriad places to stop to eat and drink. Built around the River Lym, Lyme has its own working Water Mill, recently refurbished to include an electricity generator. Lyme Regis is very special in that it is probably the smallest town in the country to boast its own cinema, theatre, and museum.

The Cobb attracts visitors – not just for its visual splendour and its magnificent naval architecture, but also for its connections with great literature. Indeed, people come from all over the world to see the steps where Louisa Musgrove fell in Jane Austen’s Persuasion; or to see where Meryl Streep stood, looking forlornly out to sea, in the film adaptation of John Fowles’ The French Lieutenant’s Woman. And art lovers are drawn to Lyme for both its beautiful scenery and for its wide range of art galleries.

Holiday makers will enjoy a family-friendly, sandy beach and an often-surprising micro-climate in the shelter of Lyme Bay. Marine Parade is a great place to walk, sit, enjoy the views and visit its small shops and eating places. Here the seafront facilities will soon benefit from restoration of the Marine Parade Shelters, ready for summer 2011. The town and surrounding area have many attractions and host a range of family-centred events, including a Jazz Festival, a Fossil Festival, Life Boat Week and a Regatta & Carnival Week.

For visitors who have had enough of the hurly-burly, and need to escape, there are many delightful places to stay to suit all budgets. You will be able to enjoy walks in the surrounding countryside and there are many opportunities to go out on a boat to view the glorious coastline from the sea or to fish in the clear waters of Lyme Bay.

Whether you are into sunbathing, walking, fossils or even jazz – Lyme Regis has something for everyone.

"Exactly as it was described on the internet"

Fantastic house, everything provided and the kitchen was amazingly equipped. The location of the house was great as all amenities were close by. Would definately like a return trip with family.

"Three generations together for a fab weekend"

I booked the house to celebrate my in laws birthdays. We had 3 generations together with ages ranging from mid 70's down to 3. The decor is stunning and there was plenty of room for everyone. Easy access to the high street and the beach made life even easier. I would thoroughly recommend Springfield House for a special occasion. It is not a cheap option but gives more flexibility than staying in a hotel.

"A gorgeous and beautifully presented house with the wow factor!"

We spent a fantastic weekend at springfield house for a 40th birthday celebration. The house is beautifully decorated and furnished to very high standards, and very well equipped. The bedrooms are lovely, with really comfortable beds and some wonderful sea views. Unfortunately, a weekend in Feb meant we didn't make use of the outside space, but I imagine it would be great in the summer. We did however spend lots of time in the beautiful drawing room, either relaxing by the log fire, reading one of the many magazines on offer or playing games. On the Saturday evening, James from Lyme Bay Field Kitchen came in to cater for us, with the lovely Jess, who served champagne and canapes in the drawing room, which worked brilliantly, followed by supper in the dining room......delicious food - can highly recommend them as they did a grand job! Springfield is ideal for a gathering like ours, or for families holidaying together, but wanting somewhere really special to stay, that's like a boutique hotel. It's in a great location, a lovely walk into the town centre and seafront. There are many places to eat, and we can highly recommend the Hix oyster bar. All in all a truly great weekend, one to remember with absolutely no faults, and the owners were a pleasure to deal with and exremely helpful.

"Look no further - Springfield rocks"

My family and friends stayed at Springfield to celebrate my 40th birthday. It was an unqualified success and will be remembered for a very long time. The house has been fantastically renovated with a great balance of modern and traditional features. It is supremely located with views out over the sea, yet a short walk into the centre of the town. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend Springfield and look forward to returning in the near future.

"This house is fantastic, beautiful decor, well located and to die for"

I booked Springfield House for my husbands 50th Birthday celebration with a group of 14 family and friends. The webiste images looked good but were surpased by the house itself. Springfield somehow managed to be homely and wonderfully equiped and comfortable yet still be beautifully decorated, chic and fantatcically located. The car park was great for all the cars (room for 8 spaces) and the teenage kids and some of the 50 year old ones too loved the snooker and games rooms. The view from the windows accross the Jurassic Coast in the morning where breath taking and just a stroll out the side gate and you were either right next to the Mariners Hotel, where they serve a great steak, or a short wander down the hill to the town and the Cobb. On Saturday we all went to Hix Oyster and Fish House again a short 10 miniute walk and were not disappointed. We also decided to arrange a caterer for both Friday night and Sunday lunch as we were such a large group and The Lyme Bay Field Kitchen cannot be praised highly enough. Book this house if you don't, you will miss, what for us, was simply the best long weekend ever.

"Delightful house, beautifully furnished and in a central location"

My family of 11 including 4 children under six stayed at Springfield House for 3 days to celebrate our daughter's 40th birthday. The house is very well equipped including a games room. The owners have thought of everything, including buckets, spades, fishing nets, etc so rain or shine there was something to occupy all ages. We stayed in December so never got to enjoy the outside space but the real log fire in the drawing room made it very cosy at this time of year.
