The Gatehouse is a stone-built two-storey cottage in the quiet and peaceful village of Challacombe within the beautiful Exmoor National Park. The Gatehouse is full of charm and character. There is a large living room with exposed beams, a lovely log/coal stove, 32" Freeview TV and French doors out to a private enclosed garden which also has a large decked area and picnic table. The fully-equipped kitchen has an electric oven & hob, fridge (freezer box), microwave and dishwasher. Upstairs are two bedrooms, a double bedroom and a triple (with a single bed and large bunks) and a bathroom with a bath (shower over), hand-basin & WC.

Beside the Gatehouse are three acres of wildlife grounds, ideal for families and dogs. There are wild-flower meadows, several lawned and wooded areas, a fruit and vegetable garden, a wildlife pond, lots of birds and butterflies, and a delightful walk up and around Humphrey's Hill.

The cottages and grounds are very child friendly. We can provide a cot, high chair, fire guard and stair gate (if required) and within the grounds is a large children's play area comprising two towers linked with a bridge, a swing, slide, climbing board, climbing net, fireman's pole, ladder, periscope and driving wheel. Beside the play area is a sheltered arbour seat with lovely views for the grown-ups.

Within 300 yards of the Gatehouse is an excellent pub with award-winning food and real ales, and a handy shop and Post Office, with delicious cream teas and home-made cakes.

The village of Challacombe is very friendly towards visitors, has excellent local walks and is in an ideal central location from which to explore the heart of Exmoor, the sandy beaches of Woolacombe and Croyde, and the rocky coves of the North Devon & Somerset coast.

The Gatehouse is one of five holiday cottages at Exmoor Cottage Holidays and has recently been completely renovated, including new kitchen & bathroom and insulation to the outside walls. There are four other cottages, also listed in this website, with one to three bedrooms, surrounding a peaceful courtyard. John and Melanie look forward to welcoming you to Exmoor.

Challacombe

With so little light pollution at night, Exmoor National Park is the first Dark Skies Reserve in Europe.

"Peaceful respite in a lovely valley"

Stayed at the gatehouse in February , when most of the country and Devon was flooded..! Lovelŷ welcoming clean cottage . And our 2 dogs loved lying in front of the fire. Cottage is well equipped , very clean, .local pub up the road and another one at Parracombe , which we preferred. Had some some lovely walks , watched the sheep out of the longue window, listened to the birds tweeting, had all the seasons of snow, rain and sun. wonderful.... Owners supply wood for the fire so easy to put on. Will be returning , esp as we only live in East Devon, so not far to travel...

Thank you for your great review. We are glad that you and your dogs enjoyed your stay - the weather certainly has been interesting! We are sorry that your cottage was a bit chilly on your first night - we try to have all the heaters on for at least one day before guests arrive but sometimes previous guests turn the night storage off. We are glad that you soon got the fire going. We look forward to welcoming you back.
