The Argyll and Bute region
During its course from Ardrishaig northwards to Crinan Loch, the Crinan canal passes through some of Argyll's most outstanding countryside, and its 15 locks and 7 swing bridges provide added interest for visitors. For the sporting guest, golf is available at the nearby Lochgilphead Golf Club.
The excellent fishing includes facilities for sea angling and salmon fishing. Many attractive hill forest walks are to be found in the vicinity of the hotel and walking or cycling along the Crinan Canal is a popular pursuit. Crinan Canal Cottage is an easy drive from the nearby village of Tayvallich. There are opportunities for sailing, and yachts are available for charter.
For those wanting a more relaxed holiday, local places of interest include Inveraray Castle, home of the Duke and Duchess of Argyll, where some of the finest treasures in Scotland are on exhibition. Dunadd Fort where the ancient Kings of Scotland were crowned and ancient cairns and standing stones. Inveraray Jail is an unusual holiday attraction. Guides dressed in the uniforms of prisoners and warders re-enact its 19th century past.
At Kilmartin House Museum, Argyll's ancient past comes alive. The Highland Wildlife Park at Kincraig features herds of red deer, Highland cattle and many species now extinct in the wild.
Crinan Canal Cottage is situated in the much sought-after hamlet of Cairnbaan, a charming area of unspoilt natural beauty approximately halfway along the Crinan Canal. The canal itself is picturesque and beautifully landscaped, and provides plenty of interest with the daytime passage of boats to and fro.
Cairnbaan is very conveniently located within 3 miles of the shopping and leisure facilities of the small town of Lochgilphead, and within 2 hours' drive of Glasgow. Lochgilphead is the main centre for mid-Argyll and its amenities include shops, schools, businesses, sports facilities, a swimming pool, a hospital and council offices.
Cairnbaan is also situated approximately 30 miles south of Oban, known as 'The Gateway to the Isles'. In addition to offering a full range of amenities and travel links by rail, bus, sea and air, Oban also offers ferry access to the Inner and some of the Outer Hebrides.
The rural location of the property offers unlimited potential for country life and outdoor pursuits. It is within easy reach of several marinas and is in the heart of the renowned west coast sailing area with the coastline and islands to the west offering superb sailing.
The cottage is located in an area of great historical and archaeological interest, with visitor attractions such as Inverary Castle and Kilmartin museum within easy driving distance. The location of the cottage is such that it gives the holiday maker the opportunity for peace and quiet, whilst at the same time sitting in a central location with easy access to all amenities.

"shhhh, don't tell anyone about this little gem!"
A cosy cottage with everything you could need with a very helpful owner who provided email suggestions of places to visit before and during the trip particularly when the weather wasn't perfect. Great location - so peaceful yet so accessible to many beautiful locations. Enjoyed watching the world go by on the canal and through the canal locks. House and garden was perfect for our young dog. We will definitely return.
Thank you so much for your response. I am glad that you enjoyed your stay at Crinan Canal Cottage and I look forward to welcoming you back. Maybe the weather may be better this time.

A comfortable cottage in a great location. The cottage is very well equipped with everything you could ask for and more, and spotlessly clean. The owner was very helpful with suggestions for places to go and things to do. The wood-burning stove was lovely and cosy in the evenings. Weather wasn't great but still a lovely, relaxing week.

"Peace and tranquility along Britain's most beautiful canal."
The cottage was just perfect for our week's holiday exploring this stunning part of Argyll. Pauline has thought of everything one might need. The kitchen is superbly equipped! The sitting room is so cosy with its woodburner. Bedrooms are compact but very comfortable beds. The front double is sunny and has lovely views over the canal. Outside sit and watch as the yachts drift by on their way to beautiful Crinan Harbour. Listen to the Cuckoo's in the nearby woods. Stroll down to the Cairnbaan Hotel for a coffee, or tasty food. Its bliss to cycle or walk the whole canal. We found it to be centrally situated to visit so many places- Mull of Kintyre and Islands of Gigha, Islay etc., Wildlife abounds- we spotted deer behind the cottage! Fabulous!
Thank you for taking the time to review Crinan Canal Cottage, it is always appreciated and I am very happy that you enjoyed your stay and look forward to welcoming you back.

"What terrible weather but what a delightful stay!"
The cottage is cosy AND stylish and has everything that you could possibly need. Don't think about bringing hairdryer, tea towels, soap, kitchen towel etc etc. Lots of games and books provided by the owner. It is beautifully situated beside the Crinan Canal with so much to do round and about and the Crinan Hotel nearby has food and views to die for. The weather was bleak to say the least, but we enjoyed the holiday simply because the cottage was so lovely, and the owner was so helpful, both before and during the visit The log burning stove was a delight. We will be back for sure.
Many thanks for taking the time to review the cottage, which is always appreciated. I am glad that you enjoyed your stay especially in the really bad weather and that the log burner kept you warm.

"Did not want to leave"
Just loved my stay here. What a lovely part of the country and not too touristy. The cottage is in a great location..on the canal with an easy flat walk right to the Crinan Hotel. Our accommodation was tastefully decorated with absolutely everything that we required. I am a person who likes 'my monies worth' and have' nothing' negative to say about my whole experience in this lovely wee cottage and the beauty of Cairnbaan, Kilmartin, Tayvallich and surrounding countryside. Please go visit.
Many thanks for taking the time to leave feedback about the Crinan Canal Cottage and your recent visit. This is very much appreciated and I do hope you will visit again in the warmer weather.

"Lovely cottage in great location"
We had a fantastic week at Cairnbaan. Pauline was very helpful and friendly with directions and advice prior to our arrival. The cottage is cosy and well-equipped for 4 people and a dog. You can step straight out onto the canal paths with no traffic or watch the boats going through the locks. We walked along the canal (great hot chocolate at Crinan), visited the chapels at Kiellmore and Kilmory (and saw 3 wild otters), did the beaver walk, cairn hopped at Kilmartin (excellent cafe) and explored the wider area including Oban, Seil Island, Inverary Jail and Cruachan Power Station - there was so much more we could have done if we'd been there longer. Autumn is a spectacular time to visit with the trees changing colour and the coastline is amazing. Would recommend this cottage as a great base to explore the area.
Many thanks for your kind remarks which are really appreciated and I look forward to welcoming you all back to the cottage again.

"Really comfortable well equipped cottage in a a beautiful and interesting location."
This cottage is an excellent base for a family holiday or for a quiet getaway for a couple. We stayed with our 9 year old grandson and our spaniel - we all had a great time. The cottage is very well equipped and comfortable - Pauline has thought of everything and the little stove makes for cosy evenings whatever the weather. Our grandson really enjoyed cycling along the towpath and helping boat crews at the locks - with our supervision of course! We had some interesting trips out to the local area - beaver hunting in Knapdale -(we didn't see any!), the slate quarries at Easedale wth a trip round the islands and through the sound of Corryvreckan with Seafari and an afternoon at Arduaine Garden. Lovely places to eat within easy driving or walking distance at Tayvallich, Crinan and Crobh Haven - and of course the 'local' at Cairn Baan Hotel, but good shops in Lochgilphead and a well equipped kitchen mean it's no bother to cook if you want to. Lovely walks along the canal and in Kilmartin Glen and a lovely beach at Crinan Ferry mean you don't have to travel far if you don't want to. The setting for the cottage at the canal side is idyllic with plenty of space for the boy and his dog to play safely. We'll definitely be paying another visit soon!
Many thanks for taking the time to review my property - it is really appreciated and I am pleased that you, your grandson and of course the dog enjoyed your stay and look forward to seeing you again at Crinan Canal Cottage.
