The Cumbria/Lake District
The Lake District conjures up images of magnificent mountains and shimmering lakes and that is exactly what visitors find here. In fact the whole county of Cumbria is home to some of Britain's most beautiful scenery.
This region has been a favourite all year round holiday destination for years and apart from its natural beauty it's also packed with lots of attractions and activities that cater for every kind of holidaymaker, from family holidays to romantic breaks for couples and from those who are looking for lots of activities and sports to those that prefer more gentle country pursuits.
The Lake District National Park lies at the heart of Cumbria and contains well known and much loved holiday destinations such as Windermere, Bowness, Ambleside, Coniston and Grasmere, here there are lots of charming Lakeland villages to discover and visitor attractions for all the family.
The northern and western lakes have miles of untouched natural rugged beauty and rural villages as well as being home to the historic northern lakes town of Keswick with its many shops, pubs and restaurants; providing a great holiday base.
Other areas to discover include the Eden Valley, Cartmel peninsula, south east Cumbria and the Carlisle and Hadrian's Wall area; all equally beautiful and very handy for day trips into the lakes.
Well stocked village shop. Brambles cafe serving lovely cakes and coffee. Wainwrights Inn 200m away serving wide range of local food and real ale. Gothic 14th century church. Riverside walk - 200m. Fellside walks - 200m

"I can't rate this booking highly enough!"
I travelled with my Husband, Son, Daughter, Son in law and Grandchildren aged 2 and 9. The cottage was suitable for everyone. It was comfortable, clean and in a lovely position in the village. The a… More
Great to hear you had a good time and the weather was kind. Apologies for the damaged games and missing batteries - alas I didn't know but thanks for the feedback. It's difficult to stock check on everything especially when we have back to back bookings - it's been a busy summer! But now it's getting quieter I'll get up there next week and do a full check and replace where necessary. Hope to see you again soon. Thank you, Warren

"Fantastic house and surroundings."
We had a very wet week - but thanks to this wonderful house - we still had an amazing holiday. The house was warm and spacious and had everything we could need. The children loved the games room and w… More
Many thanks for your kind review. Apologies for the unseasonal wetness - I normally order the rain to be delivered inbetween guests but there was some mix up with the delivery (even the weather gods can get it wrong!). I've had suggestions that I could turn the games room into an extra bedroom or en-suite for one of the adjacent bedrooms, but I've found with my own experience that it's good to have some internal entertainment when the rare rain turns up. And I've tried to stock the games room to keep children (and adults) of all ages occupied. Hope to see you again next year, when I'll make sure the sun coincides with your stay. Thanks again. Warren

This is a great house in the heart of the Langdales.. well equipped kitchen, wifi, games room with pool table, comfy beds, nice lounge, pub only 100 yards a way. We had an extended family gathering t… More
Many thanks for your kind review Stephen - the back-to-work-blues has obviously not kicked in yet! I think you had some great weather too - Sept is a very undervalued month I feel - but I like to keep the Games room well stocked so there's something to keep children (and adults) occupied if the rare rain makes an appearance. And yes, the Langdales are stunningly beautiful - I never tire of the vista you get of the 'Pikes' as you drive over the cattle grid at the entrance to Elterwater Common. Hope to see you down again next year - the sofa-bed in the games room will definitely be in place then!! Cheers, W

Wow - great review Rachel. Many thanks indeed and very grateful for the constructive feedback. Summer duvets (in lieu of the winter duvets) now ordered and should be in place for next week. But, the downstairs loo might take a little longer! Of course, the mobile signal is beyond my control, but as you say, it can be a relief to be disconnected from the world every now and then! Hope to see you back. Warren

Thanks for your review and glad you enjoyed your stay. Obviously can't do much about the mobile phone coverage but the payphone is good for emergencies and of course guests can use the Wifi to call out via Skype or Viber on their phones etc. Hope to see see you and your Lab back again next year. Thanks again, Warren

Glad you enjoyed your stay and yes, I'm always trying to improve things whether it's in small (bought some kitchen scales this week) or big ways (the wood burning stove that I had installed last year). Actually, the cottage is better stocked than my permanent home!!

"Spacious, clean, well-stocked, and perfectly located!"
We had a wonderful stay in the Old Postmaster's Cottage. Warren gave us thorough instructions and was extremely helpful and responsive to my questions in the weeks leading up to our stay. The cot… More
Many thanks for your review and I'm really pleased you had a good time. And yes, Chapel Stile is a great village location for a Lakes holiday. When I was looking to buy a cottage somewhere in the Lakes, I spent about 18 months and viewed about 20 properties before I bought The Old Postmasters Cottage. It's virtually bang in the middle of the Lakes National Park, near to the larger towns of Ambleside, Windermere & Grasmere but in a much quieter village location - those towns get very (too?) busy at weekends and in summer. But, Chapel Stile still has the 'essential' facilities of a village shop, pubs & church within walking distance. Hope to see you back next year where you'll find the WiFi network much easier to log on to!! Thanks for the feedback. Warren

"Awesome spot awesome accomodation."
I have no hesitation recommending The Old Post Office. There were 7 of us and we had a great time. It is ideally situated in a small valley and great for trekking around the Lake District. Accomodatio… More
Thanks for your kind reviews Colin and glad you enjoyed your stay at The Old Postmasters Cottage. You refer to the Old Post Office which is next door - did you tunnel through!! No worries, others have made the same mistake - maybe I should change the name to something completely different?? The 2 cottages were originally internally joined - next door being the Post Office & shop (they once had petrol pumps outside!) and my cottage being the living quarters of the Postmaster/mistress. And yes, having just 1 bathroom if you have a big party is not ideal, but the second and separate toilet at least allows for 'emergencies'. Hope you had a safe journey back to Oz - hope to see you back next time you're over. Hooroo, Warren

Thanks a lot for your kind review. And thanks for looking after the cottage. I must admit I'm always a little nervous with dogs staying (unfortunate incident last year) but with every doggy guest, my confidence is being re-built that most dog owners are responsible and respectful people. Oh yes, and my cleaner passes on her thanks too - she's never had an easier clean!! Warren

Many thanks and great to hear you enjoyed your stay. The Langdales are wonderful even in February but sublime in summer. And I do keep adding little things to try and make it more a home from home - it's actually better equipped than my main home! Hope to see you back soon. Warren
