Make your mother’s day

It’s Mother’s Day in the USA tomorrow, but if you’re based in the UK along with the flowers and card, why not treat Mum to a mini-break? We have got great ideas for activities and places to stay, all guaranteed to make this Mothering Sunday one your Mum will remember.

Shop till she drops

Few countries do shopping quite like the UK and you’re spoilt for choice when it comes to giant shopping malls where Mum can shop to her heart’s content. One of the country’s biggest is at Bluewater in Kent, home to a massive 330 shops and over 50 eateries. Not to mention the surrounding lakes and parkland, perfect for a relaxing stroll after some hard shopping.

Where to stay: Home-from-home comforts come standard at this traditional Kent lapboard cottage in the middle of lovely countryside yet just half an hour from Bluewater. And as its B&B accommodation Mum doesn’t have to think about breakfast.

Because she’s worth it

Most Mums are busy, busy and rarely get a moment to themselves. How about taking your Mum away for a weekend where she can relax and enjoy some time out from the daily hamster wheel? Steamy hot water works wonders on everyone so spas are a great choice. Add a gourmet dinner to the spa and Mothering Sunday weekend couldn’t be more relaxing.

Where to stay: Just outside Liverpool and a walk from the beach, this modern mansion comes with heated indoor pool, sauna and hot tub, plus cinema and games rooms for après-spa entertainment. And you can get the in-house chef to prepare dinner.

Tea like Mother makes it

Or doesn’t make it – because she won’t have to if you take her out to one of the UK’s top tearooms for a traditional afternoon tea spread. Think dainty sandwiches – cucumber, smoked salmon, ham and mustard, egg and cress…, clotted cream and jam with scones, buns, homemade cakes, all washed down with cups of tea and on this special occasion, a glass of bubbly.

Where to stay: One of the UK’s best venues for afternoon tea is Betty’s in Harrogate and this designer apartment with all mod cons has the tearooms right on its doorstep. Its comfy fittings make it perfect for a relaxing Mothering Sunday weekend.

Take her away from it all

Whisk your Mum away to a country retreat and treat her to a weekend surrounded by some of the UK’s best natural scenery. Make the getting away from it all extra special by choosing a location with some great views and staying in a traditional cottage (but make sure it comes with a few luxury touches too!).

Where to stay: New Abbey, just south of Dumfries, is one of Scotland’s best small villages and this historic cottage (recently totally refurbished) brings you a perfect Mother’s Day in the country – mountain views, golden beaches and loads of fresh air.

Treat her to a tent

But one with a difference – forget dripping canvas, nylon sleeping bags and hard ground, and instead imagine cosy woodburners, comfy beds and relaxing candlelight. All under the decorative and spacious surroundings of a yurt (a traditional Mongolian tent but much nearer to home). A great idea for a Mothering Sunday weekend – with a twist of adventure.

Where to stay: This yurt sits in the heart of Dartmoor on its own small lake and comes with comforts that are all eco-friendly so you and Mum can really get back to nature. The Eastern décor and alpacas next-door bring an exotic touch to a great English destination.
