The property was formerly a Forestry Commission Office and has been tastefully converted to a very attractive, cosy two double bed-roomed holiday home. This high standard innovative convertion was completed in August 2008. The main bedroom has en-suite bathroom with king size bed and the efficient underfloor heating throughout the property provides all year round comfort. The property is extremely light and airy as it benifits from south and west facing patio doors, with feature light shafts in the kitchen and living room. There is a modern well fitted kitchen with slate floor, where you can sit at the breakfast bar enjoying a wonderful view through the trees to the Galloway Hills or maybe spot a red squirrel leaping from tree to tree. As well as Red Squirrels there is Roe Deer and an abundance of bird life surrounding The Shack. In february the woods surrounding the Shack are covered with a carpet of snowdrops, making this a particular beautiful time of year to visit.

We have just returned this week, the snowdrops are wonderful and the wildlife is extremely busy. I have downloaded 2 short videos one of a woodpecker feeding with finches flying around behind and a red squirrel running down the tree next to the feeding table. These include riding, archery, clay pigeon shooting, fishing, sailing and you are on the doorstep of the 7stanes cycle routes. Or if you enjoy a more gentle ride or walk you can go the 2-3 miles past the Cally Palace Hotel to Sandgreen with its wonderful beach, or continue to Carrick Bay and along to Ardwell Island.
There are some pleasant signed walks in the forest adjacent to the Shack. In february the woods are carpeted with snow drops and in May with bluebells. The area has some beautiful cycle routes. Route 7 runs through the forest.

In a city you might see only a few dozen of the brightest stars, in Galloway Forest Dark Sky Park, on a clear night, you will be dazzled by thousands of stars.
Why not book a winter break and explore the heavens as few see them. We will provide you with the Stargazers Welcome pack telling what to see and the best places to see them.

“Beautiful area & lovely home away from home”

Reviewed 20 Mar 2014

We spent February half term at the Shack & are so very glad we did. Communication throughout the booking and stay was excellent. Directions were very easy to follow. The Shack was fully equipped & a joy to base ourselves in. We had wondered whether it would be warm enough without a log burner to centre ourselves around in Feb but needn't have worried - the under floor heating was toasty warm. The Shack was a perfect sized holiday home for our family of 4 and the kids (age 9 & 11) thoroughly enjoyed it. We didn't take bikes due to the time of year but I think it would be an ideal site for cycling trips. We went on a few walks and particularly enjoyed shell collecting at Moss yard and Sandgreen. We had daily visits from the local red squirrels which was a wonderful sight. Local attractions we visited other than the beaches included watching Red Kites feeding, Laggans Outdoor Centre and horse riding at Lochill Equestrian Centre & we enjoyed fish & chips from an award winning chippy. Yummy. We would definitely recommend staying at the Shack. When we were considering where to stay for our holiday we short-listed 2 cottages and the Shack won out due to, amongst other things, the glowing reviews that we read. We are so very pleased we chose the Shack over other places and happy to add our voice to those reviews. Thank you Brian & Helen for a thoroughly relaxing vacation.

“amazing . . . .”

Brian and Helen have found the perfect place to be in all weathers. My family and I first stayed here in June 2011 and loved it so much we had to come back, it feels like a home from home. Gatehouse is a fresh of breath air, from the smell of the trees, the tweet of the birds to daily wildlife visitors, this is the place to be. We travelled with our daughter who was 3 at the time and thoroughly enjoyed herself from walks, the seaside and feeding our new friends. You have to visit here to believe it. We tried to book here again recently but left it to late - our loss!!!

“Excellent House & Wonderful Location”

Reviewed 21 Feb 2012

My husband and I and our 3 young boys stayed at The Shack for the half term break in February. Brian & Helen were very friendly when we booked and helpful via email. Brian was there to greet us when we arrived to show us around. The Shack is done up to a very high standard. We loved the kitchen and the under floor heating, not to mention The Shack's beautiful location! It is lovely to be nestled in the woods with all the lovely scenery. There are many windows in The Shack, all with beautiful views and we really enjoyed watching all the wildlife, with the squirrels being our children's favourite. Every morning, we would leave nuts out and sit and watch the squirrels come to visit. It was one of the highlights of our stay. The Shack provided us all with a very relaxing stay, after all of the places we've stayed The Shack is definitely one of our new favourites. The owners are lovely and it is clear they put a lot of effort into making sure the guests have a good stay. When we arrived, they even left a welcome pack with nuts for the squirrels, shortbread, fresh bread, butter and wine. Really lovely! I just can't say enough as to what a great place this is and what a great time we all had. It's definitely great to families and children with all the wildlife and scenic views. Only one thing would make it better which would be if they had wi-fi as it would have been helpful to have internet access to research local sites, amenities, etc. however this would just be an added luxury. I would not hesitate to book again. We can't wait to go back!

“silence, squirrels, scenery”

Reviewed 1 Jan 2012

If you want a quiet peacefull clean tidy and very well stocked place to stay then this is for you, where the only noise comes from the visits of many species of birds and the amazing family of Red Squirrels who tend to visit early morning to make breakfast a pleasure. The Shack is surrounded by awesome scenery and the local towns have all the amenities you could ask for. This was our 2nd stay at the Shack and out 5th or 6th to the area and its only our second stay because we only found it 2 years ago
