Description

Unusual romantic retreats for 2 people - offering peace, tranquility and beautiful elevated views across the River Tamar. Ideal for honeymoons, wedding anniversaries (especially 10th which is Tin!), birthdays or just as a cosy hideaway to get away from it all. You will feel like you are miles away from anywhere, yet the village of Calstock is only a short 10/15 minute walk along the river bank - this quaint Cornish village has a shop open from 8am to 8pm, two pubs which serve food, an art gallery, and branch line railway station with regular services to Plymouth. The National Trust's enchanting Cotehele House is also within walking distance and the Tamar Valley Discovery Trail actually passes through Okel Tor. Dartmoor, Bodmin Moor and the sandy beaches at Whitsand Bay on the south coast are just a short drive away.

Okel Tor is acknowledged by English Heritage to be one of the best surviving 19th century tin mines nationally. It is a Scheduled Ancient Monument and World Heritage

Perched high up on a meander of the river, and cloaked in natural woodland, there are 2 cottages which are about 15 metres apart and screened from each other with vegetation, both are Grade II Listed and situated within approximately 16 acres of natural woodland on the tidal reaches of the River Tamar with beautiful views of Devon. There are a number of interesting ruins and an abundance of flora and fauna - there is some lowland heath with heather and gorse, marshland with wild garlic and irises, reed beds and about 400 metres of river frontage on The Tamar. There are numerous picturesque romantic ruins in the woodland - an evocative reminder of the region's industrial past.

The Smithy offers central heating and a log burning stove, 1 double bedroom, and 1 shower room, open-plan living room with sofa-bed, flat screen TV, music system with iPod dock, kitchen and dining areas and a south facing covered verandah with elevated views across the river.

Please note there is a £25 charge for pets per week or part of. All bookings include cancellation and curtailment insurance.

Location description from owner

The England region

Cornwall has some of the most stunning scenery and rich variety of landscapes in the British Isles: dramatic rugged cliffs, coves, sandy beaches, exposed moorland and rias with woodland spilling down to the water's edge. The region is famous for it's quaint fishing villages, food, art and heritage. Cornwall is also internationally important for it's contribution to mining - ruined engine houses and chimneys, some covered with ivy and cloaked in woodland, others in more exposed sites, provide atmospheric reminders of the region's industrial past... Several areas of the county and parts of West Devon have World Heritage Site Status and these archaeological remains are arguably as important as the Taj Mahal and the pyramids of Egypt. The Tamar Valley is at the heart of one of these areas, and is very much an undiscovered and un-commercialised part of the county - enjoying peace and tranquility, away from the hustle and bustle of the more well known crowded resorts. It is an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty with it's own micro-climate, being remarkably mild throughout the year - locally grown strawberries, cherries, apples and flowers used to be some of the first in the country to be sent to the Covent Garden market...

Calstock

Okel Tor Mine lies within the Tamar Valley Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, it is also within the Cornish Mining World Heritage Site. Calstock is a small village on the tidal reaches of the Tamar, with a village store open from 8pm to 8pm 7 days a week, stocking virtually everything you might need, there are also an art gallery, a pub which serves food and branch line railway station with regular services along this scenic Tamar Valley line to Plymouth. The National Trust's enchanting Cotehele House with its working corn mill and quay-side restaurant is within walking distance, as is Morewellham Quay historic port and copper mine - a living museum where you can journey underground on a narrow gauge railway into the workings of The George & Charlotte Mine - as featured on the BBC TV series The Edwardian Farm. The attractive market town Tavistock and Dartmoor are approximately 20 minutes drive from the Mine. The Michelin star Country House Hotel and Restaurant The Horn of Plenty is about 10 minutes drive and St Mellion Golf & Country Club is about 15 mins away.

What a delightful piece of the country side! Perfect location to recharge our batteries! Wonderful scenery and peaceful vibe all round! We will definitely be returning! My dog loved it too!

“A truly relaxing location”

Reviewed 22 Feb 2016

A relaxing location, wonderful unspoilt views across that Tamar valley. Navigating the final approach and departure is a little tortuous but that only adds to the charm.

“Relaxing break in stunning location”

Reviewed 23 Sep 2015

The Smithy is an absolutely perfect spot to enjoy stunning views, gentle walks and a sense of seclusion. The property is very comfortable, well-furnished, quiet and ideal for a couple wishing to get away from it all (possibly with an energetic dog to exercise). We stayed with our two young kids which put indoor space at a bit of a premium, but we spent so much time outdoors enjoying fascinating local walks (some of which led direct from the property) that this wasn't a problem. It also has the bonus of being a 15-minute stroll from Calstock allowing the opportunity for a star/torchlit amble home after an evening in the pub.

Owner's reply: Thank you for your Trip Advisor review. It's good to know that guests find the cottage very comfortable and the area fascinating - we're delighted you enjoyed your stay and your star-lit walks home from the pub!

“Amazing Location”

Reviewed 14 Sep 2015

We had a fantastic stay at The Smithy. The view is simply amazing, looking over the River Tamar. Even though The Smithy is small has everything you need and was furnished lovely. Nick was very helpful, and the remains of Okel Tor Mine were very interesting and easily accessible. We enjoying sitting on the veranda just enjoying the silence and the changing landscape.

Owner's reply: Thank you for your recent review of The Smithy. We're pleased that you appreciated the cottage furnishings, the views, tranquility and mine ruins, and had everything that you needed. We hope to see you again!

“Wonderful peaceful hideaway”

Reviewed 31 Aug 2015

The Smithy is a wonderful get-away-from-it-all place but with pubs, shops and amenities only a short walk away in Calstock. The views are simply stunning and despite the (relative) proximity of the other cottage and owner's house, The Smithy feels very private and secluded. The verandah offers great shade when it's sunny and shelter when it rains (both of which it did when we were there!). There are some lovely walks right from your door and it's great for dogs. There's lots to do around the Tamar Valley and further afield. We will definitely return.

Owner's reply: Thank you for your review of The Smithy. We're delighted to hear that you appreciated the views, feeling of seclusion and proximity of the village. We're also pleased that the verandah came in useful! We look forward to welcoming you back!

“Stunning cottage and location”

Reviewed 5 Aug 2015

Tucked away down a bridle path is this lovely cottage, set in a stunning location. Ideal for both the north or south coasts. Never short of places to see! Breakfast outside taking in the wonderful views, very relaxing.

Owner's reply: Thank you for your review. We're pleased to hear you loved the cottage and location, and enjoyed having breakfast on the verandah whilst taking in the views! We hope to see you again.

“Relaxing and Peaceful Holiday”

Reviewed 4 Aug 2015

A quirky holiday hideaway, but with everything you need. The interior is clean and tastefully decorated with those added extras that make all the difference. Its in beautiful secluded surroundings but within a 10 minute stroll of the local village and pubs, both of which serve lovely food. There are plenty of lovely walks nearby. Easily drivable to both north and south coast beaches or nearby country homes or gardens. Had a lovely time and will go back.

Owner's reply: Thank you for your recent review of The Smithy. We're pleased you had a relaxing and peaceful holiday, appreciated the cottage decor and enjoyed the local walks and pubs. We look forward to welcoming you back!

“A beautiful peaceful hideaway overlooking the River Tamar”

Reviewed 18 Feb 2015

A magical location on the wooded banks of the Tamar. It's a beautiful spot, and with only the owner Nick, and the small Count House for neighbours, it is a peaceful place to be. Well organised, clear and prompt communication when booking. The Smithy was furnished to a high spec, with everything you need from logs for the burner, to a local books, to a fully equipped kitchen. Would certainly recommend a visit.

Owner's reply: Thank you for your review and kind recommendation. We're pleased to hear that you had everything you needed for an enjoyable and peaceful stay.

“Perfect venue in a beautiful, peacfull location.”

Reviewed 19 Jan 2015

We'd really been looking forward to our week away for some time and could not have been more delighted when we arrived at The Smithy. It was stylish and comfortable with real thought having been put into creating the perfect getaway for anyone staying. Arriving in the dark meant that waking up the next morning to discover the wonderful views was an added bonus. Lots of great walks with our dog Eric and only a 10min stroll from the local village with shops and 2 pubs meant not using the car for a few days was perfectly do-able. The friendly relaxed atmosphere created by the owner Nick makes you feel completely at ease and we really look forward to returning again hopefully this year.

Owner's reply: Thank you for your Trip Advisor review and lovely comments about The Smithy. We're delighted that you enjoyed your stay with your dog Eric and we look forward to welcoming you back!

Owner's reply: A belated thank you for your review. We're delighted to hear that your friends enjoyed their stay too, and we look forward to seeing you again in November!
