Location description from owner

The Scotland region

Covering about eighteen hundred square miles, the Scottish Borders stretches from the rolling hills and moorland in the west, through gentler valleys to the high agricultural plains of the east, and on to the rocky Berwickshire coastline with its secluded coves and picturesque fishing villages.

In the bright spring months, fresh new growth fills the valleys and forests of the Scottish Borders. Enjoy time to spare with the lure of lighter longer summer days or relax in more mellow shades of autumn when mauves and purples tint the moors. Crunch through the crisp frosts of winter, when early morning mist floats over the lowlands, and the snow capped hills sparkle in the distance. Land and sea, hills and moorland all sit happily side by side. Rivers and paths wind their way through untouched natural beauty whilst the more gentle pace of life subtly relaxes and revives you. Seasonal changes await to delight, every day at every turn.

“A Perfect Birthday Weekend”

Reviewed 2 Jan 2013

I stayed at the mansion house to celebrate my 30th birthday along with 22 other people. Everything was perfect, the communication from Clare from start to end was helpful, patient, clear and concise. With a large number of people we had lots of requests and questions, Clare was brilliant and provided us with everything we needed. The house has a real 'wow' factor, far more beautiful than the website conveys, that was a lovely surprise. Each room is classy, spacious, cosy and well equipt! A rather clever combination to achieve. I was introducing people that hadn't previously met so it was great to have enough space so not to 'step on each others toes' and cuddle up on the sofa if we wanted. Yet we had all the grandeur of a table that seats 23, with candelabras and beautiful silverware to throw a lovely dinner party with caterers recommended by the owners. Biggar town is a beautiful short walk away and has all you would expect, Fish and Chips on Friday comes highly recommended. It's just a shame we had to leave, everything was perfect, we just need to try it out for a week in the summer with the children now!

“50th birthday celebration”

Reviewed 23 Sep 2012

On celebrating my 50th birthday Toftcombs gave us all 23 guest a very unique experience that made us all feel very special. Phil and Claire (proprietors) made us feel very welcome showing us around before leaving us to explore the nooks and crannies of their stately mansion, their knowledge of elegance and fine standards were obvious for all to see with attention to detail priority. I would sincerely recommend Toftcombs for any kind of function or family gathering. Set in the most beautiful countryside with every window having picture perfect views and all the rooms oozing comfortable character, everything we needed was available. The only downside was leaving.Toftcombs gave us all a great 50th birthday celebration memory. J Brown

“Gracious Scotland Living”

Reviewed 26 Apr 2012

We traveled with three generations of four families and Toftcombs was the perfect home for our two week stay in Scotland. The grounds are lovely and the house is magnificent. Situated in a beautiful location, Toftcombs is the epitome of a gracious Scottish manor with enough bedrooms and bathrooms to satisfy thirteen people with room to spare. The house is set up for easy living which was good because we were too late to secure a butler. (Advise doing this as soon as you make your reservation.) Even so, making meals was no problem because of a well appointed kitchen and local shopping. It wasn't until we arrived for the Fringe Festival that we discovered how much more there is to do and see outside of Edinborough. Biggar, itself, is a lovely town with good restaurants and transportation into Edinborough, a city that everyone should experience at least once. August is an ideal time because that is when theTheatre Festival and Military Tattoo events are held. Tickets to festival events are available for the same day but Tattoo tickets should be ordered in advance. We rented three cars for sightseeing locally but hired a private bus for a day trip to the Highlands and the Harry Potter steam train. As with everyone else we met, the driver shared his knowledge of history and pride of heritage with a great sense of humor. Diana met us when we arrived and gave us a tour of the house. We didn't get to meet Claire in person, but were able to speak by phone. She was responsive to all our requests and with so many people, there were several. The house was set up with plugs, linens and every necessary amenity to make sure even the fussiest guest was cared for. Janice was on site to help us with what we needed to be comfortable and give us advice on where to go and what to see. Our entire family has great memories of Scotland and Toftcombs thanks to Claire, Diana and Janice.
