“Cosey Country Cottage Feel in North London” My wife and I visit London from Australia often to see our family and always stay in self catering accommodation, usually in East London (Docklands). This time we decided to try something different, out of the central area. We also thought it would be good to experience an area we were not familiar with, adding to the "adventure" while getting to know another part of London. We scanned all the usual ads on line and came up with a short list which fitted our criteria and chose The Stables at the Old Bakery, Winchmore Hill, primarily because the owner (Nina) replied to our enquiry almost straight away and was very positive and helpful (some of the others never replied at all). What also won us over was that we could book The Stables starting any day of the week which suited us as we arrived in London on a Wednesday (other places would only book Saturday to Saturday).
We found The Stables to be very much as advertised - a warm, friendly cosy country cottage feel in a genuine old, "heritage" type setting of the Old Bakery. While small inside (as expected and described), there was plenty of room for my wife and I to sit around or cook our meals in the more than adequately equipped kitchen. The shower in the bathroom was certainly "above average" from an Australian’s perspective of English hotel shower facilities. We loved the loft bedroom, lots of character although you had to be careful of the steep, narrow access stairs (bit like those on a ship) and careful not to bump your head on the sloping roof (we are tall).
The Stables is located just off the main village square of Winchmore Hill which really does live up to the "villiage" tag with the consideration that it is basically still an urban area of greater London. There are nice coffee shops and a well stocked small supermarket (a Sainsburys is a 15 minute walk away), a couple of good pubs and restaurants (we tried the Turkish one which was very good). There are some very nice walks, e.g. you can walk down the Broad Walk (which starts of the square and gape at the magnificent homes or go the nearby park which offers a pleasant walk through woods and around a lake.
Overall w were very impressed with The Stables and the Winchmore Hill region. We certainly achieved our aim of staying somewhere refreshingly different and getting to know another part of London. We couldn’t fault the quality of the accommodation itself and the friendless and helpful attitude of our hosts who conveniently live nearby and were always available but were never intrusive.
“Quiet, clean, spacious with good transport conncections to central London” We had a wonderful stay at the Old Bakery with our two children aged 12 and 16. This spacious appartment dating from late 1500's, is beautifully restored. Nina was a wonderful host and provided us with all sorts of information about London excursions and about the history of the Old Bakery itself. The price was reasonable (for London) and the travel connections to the downtown core worked well. A pleasant surprise are the three excellent restaurants (traditional, Greek-Cypriot Deli and Indian) less than 5 minutes walk from the flat with take-out possibilities (after a long day in the city!). I highly recommend this appartment.
“Living with Seb and Judy is a lovely experience in itself!!” Living with Seb and Judy is an experience in itself!
Great apartment, beautiful area, 5 minutes to the Tube, but the best is Seb and Judy
and their helpfulness in all areas, for example. Tips for hiking, traveling times or spices for dinner or a cup of tea together.
Next time will also be at Seb and Judy!
We very much enjoyed our stay at the Old Bakery. This is a perfectly restored cottage that is very comfortable in a terrific neighborhood. There are several pubs and restaurants in the area that were delicious and it was very close to the train station. I would recommend the Old Bakery for anyone looking for a quiet comfortable place to relax away from all the chaos of the city. …

The owners really made sure we got the most out of our stay and we enjoyed the comfort and spaciousness of the property with lots of attention to detail. …
MODERN 2 BED HOUSE NEXT TO FINCHLEY CENTRAL TUBE!
Comfortable, homely, clean and tidy property
We had a very good time in your property which we found conveniently located, near the tube station, bus stops and shops. We did appreciate your hospitality and your generosity in providing us with fresh fruit, coffee, tea, milk and everything we needed for breakfast and also in arranging a wide-range of toiletries in the bathroom. We found the property comfortable, homely, clean and tidy which we would highly recommend. The kitchen is well equipped and we had everything we needed. My son and his girl friend came to visit us one evening and we had no difficulty in preparing a meal. We really felt like being at home. My friends who did'nt know London enjoyed themselves very much. We did a lot of sightseeing in Central London, even when the weather was bad!. Unfortunately, because of the weather we couldn't take advantage of your beautiful garden and barbecue ! …
The Stables at The Old Bakery
We read the reviews first which were excellent so had no hesitation booking the place. Arrived for our 5 day break - what can we say about this place. Absolutely perfect, such a gorgeous hidden gem, a wonderful cosy retreat with everything available inside for our stay. Nina was a truly lovely lady, everything explained to us and nothing at all a trouble to her. She was just so lovely and we cannot thank her enough. Again, the place was a true delight, wish we had booked longer just to have longer here. Oh and not forgetting the gorgeous garden, so gorgeous. Coming home in evening, it was just so stunning, all lit up with twinkly lights. Shame weather wasn't too great, it would have been wonderful to sit outside in the garden having breakfast or a pre dinner evening drink. Thank you again Nina, if I could award 100000 stars for this gem of a place, I would. …
