The Blackdown Hills are a range of hills along the Somerset-Devon border in south-western England, which were designated an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB) in 1991. They cover an area of 145 square miles and the highest point is at Staple Hill, about a mile from the Old Pigsty at 1033ft. The hills in the southern part of the Balckdowns are more gentle.
The Blackdown Hills are a very quiet and rural part of the country. Much of the land is used for farming. There are many different types of habitat in the area, from woodland, grassland, heathland and mire. This means that the area supports a really diverse wildlife population. This includes bats, otters, lizards, dormice, kingfishers, barn owls and nightjars.
Despite the rural setting, The Old Pigsty is in a very good location to access Taunton and Wellington (10 and 15 mins drive respectively). There are also some very good local pubs. The walking, cycling and horse riding in the area is outstanding. There are many footpaths and bridlepaths, but also the lanes are very quiet indeed.
