The Heart of England/Peak District

Alton is in the Staffordshire Moorlands, overlooking the beautiful Churnet Valley, at the foot of the Weaver Hills. Within 20 minutes drive of iconic Dovedale, the property provides ideal accommodation for those wishing to access both Alton Towers, and the moors and dales of the Peak District National Park.

Nearby towns include Cheadle (4m) with it's unique Pugin church, Uttoxeter (7m) home of the Midlands Grand National, and Ashbourne (8m) home of the historic, annual Shrovetide football match. Leek (12m) provides numerous antique emporia and the William Morris trail, whereas Stoke-on-Trent (14m) is home to potteries museums, premiership football, and a major canal network. The area has fantastic cycle pathways along the Tissington Trail, Manifold Way and disused Churnet Valley railway line.

Stoke-on-Trent

Alton has an impressive Saxon Church, Pugin-designed buildings and it's own Castle. With several pubs, a park with children's play area, woodland and river walks, a post office, mini-mart, restaurant and conservation area, the village is both historic and attractive. Two summer shows in the village, situated in the castle and school grounds, play host to live music, tug-o-war and traditional games.

Well-dressing celebrations take place across the Peak, the only Highland Games in England features each July in Ashbourne, and the famous Alton Towers firework display rounds off the autumn. Alton Towers theme park, and Splas Landings Water Park are only 5 minutes by bus or car.

"Excellent house for visit to Alton with large group"

Great locationf for Alton Towers. Plenty of room and toys in house for our 3 families of 2 adults and 2 young children. Great pub across the road, great food. They allowed us to carry the food on plates over to the house so us Adults could enjoy nice evening meal all together once children in bed. Had chinese delivery on second night which pub recommended. Loved the open fire, and kitchen was very well equipped! The accommodation offered everything we needed for our families to get together and enjoy each others company. Would definately stay again :-)

"Great location for a weekend break near Alton Towers"

Good service from the owner. Quick response to booking enquiry, timely receipt of house details and very helpful during our stay. We had a problem with the heating on arrival and the owner was quick to respond by text and phone which meant the problem was sorted within an hour.
Property was well suited to a large party of 10 people. 5 decent sized bedrooms over 2 floors. Although none of the bedrooms had an en-suites, this was not a problem as there was a bathroom on each floor. House was well equipped and we liked the unusual character of the place. Location in the village of Alton was great. Good local pub across the road and Alton Towers is within walking distance (30 m inutes). Only draw back was that, even with the heating working, the house was a bit cold for our stay in April.

"Great spot for a gathering of friends"

Spatious accommodation at a very competitive price in a lovely village location. The owners were very helpful and friendly, as were the villagers. We were there during a cold spell in winter, and had to get additional firewood - this can be obtained either from the village store or post office. There is no off-street parking, but this was not really a problem for us. There are two decent-looking pubs very close to hand. We'd like to come back in the summer.

"Very good for accomodating large number in large property"

Overall I found this property to be very good for a short stay in the locale of Alton Towers. The property was extensive with plenty of room for kids to play without getting on top of each other. The dining room and living rooms were large and comfortable with the kitchen well stocked. A few problems with kitchen appliances but these were sorted during the time of visit, which is a plus point. Plenty of games, jigsaws and books available which was a massive bonus to keep kids occupied. Lots of nice pieces of classic and quirky furniture all contributing to make it comfortable and a relaxing place for a break.
Excellent pub across the road with very good food. Another couple within a few minutes' walk. Some nice walks in the village too. A lot of effort has gone into making the place welcoming which was appreciated.

We booked this house for a group break away and to visit Alton towers! It was everything the owner said it would be and more, the house is beautiful with big open fire and and amazing looking dinning table!the house seemed to go on forever with enough room to sleep 12 in beds, there was a lovely pub across the road serving food and another pub a few doors up with a lovely beer garden!

"Great family home in the Peak District."

We had a great short break in this beautiful family home which has all amenities. We loved the way the house is decorated and the beautiful furniture. It was a delight to stay somewhere that felt so user friendly and welcoming. We enjoyed having an open fire in the sitting room which we managed to light with ease. The house is situated almost opposite the local pub but there is no noise. It serves good hearty meals. We were fortunate to be there the night there was a local band playing. All the villagers we met were extremely helpful and friendly. There are some lovely walks locally - in particular Dimingsdale but suggest you take the car down the hill and avoid the very steep climb back up to the house as after 6 miles it is a killer. We plan to return again in the warmer weather to explore more on foot and by car.

"Big, beautiful house in fabulous location - highly recommended"

We stayed at this house for our daughter's 10th birthday with friends. The house is huge - very comfortable for our party of 12, the 6 children loved having the attic to themselves with playstation, DVDs and own bathroom, in fact even they had to drag themselves away to Alton Towers (just a mile or two down the road).
The garden was lovely, we all sat around the table for a party tea out there, and the evenings were delightful with all the fairy lights and the log fire. Beautiful furniture, lots of toys and games this is clearly a much loved home.
The village of Alton is very pretty with interesting walks to take our dog on. Before we left, on the Sunday, we went to the pub opposite for their carvery, which I can honestly say was the best we have ever had!
Thank you Gabrielle - next time we will stay longer and explore the area further.

"Perfect for our girly weekend"

My friends and I used this as a base for Alton towers and then as a pamper pad the following day - local restaurants and pubs were fab and very close - absolutely gorgeous, quirky property with more than enough space, inside and out.
