The Heart of England/Peak District

The City of Hereford lies at the geographical heart of Herefordshire and boasts a wonderful Catherdral which is home to the world famous and historic Mappa Mundi and Chained Library Exhibition. A foot friendly city with museums and rivers walks and busy but still quaint shopping. You will find weekly farmers markets here as well and the daily indoor market in the traffic free high town. The Three Choirs and The Festival of Herefordshire are just two of the annual events held in the heart of the city.

An easily accessible train station provides the transport to visit towns and cities further afield. The historic market towns of Ledbury, Leominster and Church Stretton are nearby as is the famous 'book capital' of Hey on Wye.

Ross on Wye

Ross on Wye is at the heart of the Wye Valley in An Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. As a popular tourist venue and part of the famous 'Wye Tour' visitors have been coming here for centuries. The stunning River Wye meandering its way through the town is undoubtedly one of it hightlights.

Within a very short walk from the streets of town you can sit on the river bank to picnic or walk and explore the vast amount of bird and wildlife here. The river is very popular with many canoeists and families who gently pass along on their way to the next rest or watering hole! There are of course the ones who like to take the challenge of the rapids which provides much entertainment for the viewer on the riverbank! Or discover the beauty of the river from the river cruiser tours at Symonds Yat. A spectacular place to visit and home to the perigrine falcons breeding area and only 15 mins drive from this holiday home.

In and around town, Ross has many places to eat and drink from cafes and coffee shops showcasing local home made produce to traditional English pubs, hotel restaurants, and individual Indian, Thai, Chinese cuisines.

It has two supermarkets, weekly and farmers markets to very good local craft shops as well has high street names. The remowned 'Labels' shopping outlet is 5 mins out of town and is a weekly attraction for many coach loads of visitors. Antique shops abound and it has won the Britain in Bloom Award. The Visitors Centre is a hive of information and second to none.

In the pretty little award winning village of BISHOPSWOOD, 15 mins drive from the town of Ross is where you will find The Roost at Vine Tree. Although in the postal area of Herefordshire, the village lies to the northern edge of The Forest of Dean and is on the Welsh Borders making it the perfect base from which to explore the Forest of Dean, The Malvern Hills, The Black Mountains, Chelthenham, Gloucestershire, Chepstow, Monmouthshire and Abergavenny. The pretty town of Newent with its heritage museum and birds of prey visitors centre is also close by.

Within Bishopswood village itself, and a lovely walk from The Roost, you will find our local shop/off licence providing newspapers, freshly baked bread, daily essentials and hot/cold take away food. There is a canoe launch centre and access to to fishing on the river (permits from the local shop). All Saints Church is nestled within the trees and has a very warm welcome for visitors. The Village Hall is a hub of activity and has various classes you could attend from Swing Jive and Lindy Hop to Zumba/Dance Fit, Yoga and Pilates! There are often many events organised by the village to which visitors are always welcome to attend.

"A great base for our short break"

This was an ideal base for us to explore the Wye Valley. It is close to Symonds Yat and Goodrich Castle. Everything we needed was in the apartment and we were able to relax and enjoy our few days. Carol and Barry were there to greet us and were on hand to answer any questions we had about the area. Carol was kind enough to book us a table at a nearby restaurant on our first evening.

"A very quiet, clean retreat with more than everything you'll need! Excellent"

We wanted a quiet spot to relax and unwind. We found it. Carol & Barry could not have been more welcoming and their local knowledge was great to have. The wine was very good too! If you are looking for a base for superb walking, canoeing and access to the Forrest of Dean (to name a few attractions) you get it here. The accommodation is very quiet, very well equipped and above all immaculately clean, you will not be disappointed. Value for money, you can get better than this.

"The best"

The Roost at Old Vine is simply the best self catering accommodation we have ever stayed at. The location is idyllic, wonderful views of the surrounding countryside, so peaceful, and beautiful sunsets if, like us, you are lucky enough to see them. One of the best things about the apartment is the owners Carol and Barry who are so warm and welcoming, always available to help but never intrusive. They have the balance just right. And thanks for the wine Barry! The apartment itself is spacious, well designed and equipped, beautifully decorated and immaculately clean. What more could you ask? It is well situated for visiting so many places, a week is not enough and we hope to return to this delightful apartment.
