The West Country region
Somerset's beautiful countryside has attracted many famous individuals throughout history; including Sir William Wordsworth, an English poet laureate of the 19th Century. Somerset has great historical significance, and has played a part in every period including the Roman Conquest, the Norman invasion, the War of the Roses, and even right up till the present day!
Along with the rest of South West England, we have a temperate climate which is generally wetter and milder than the rest of England. The average annual sunshine totals between 1,400 and 1,600 hours.
There are many tourist attractions within easy driving distance, such as Stonehenge, Longleat House and Safari Park, Cheddar Gorge and Wookey Hole…
Grove Lodge is set within the grounds of Grove Farm, a 40 acre smallholding in the Cotswolds, a designated Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. The surrounding area is also a Site of Special Scientific Interest. We are officially part of Wiltshire but are right on the boundary of Bath and North East Somerset.
A superb local pub, The Quarryman's Arms, is only a few minutes walk from Grove Lodge and is well known for its great food and fabulous views. Enthusiastic walkers will enjoy the nearby public footpaths. Only a few yards from Grove Lodge's doorstep, it is possible to join the route of one of Geoff Mullett's favourite walks (author of Walk West) - a picturesque and typically English walk that will take you through sunny meadows and shady woodland high above the valley floor to give amazing views, passing the impressive Hazelbury Manor house along the way.
For those interested in caves and potholing, Box also has a labyrinth of caves and tunnels to explore. Box is the location of Brunel's world famous Box Tunnel, and the impressive portal is at the boundary of Grove Farm's land and can be admired from a a viewing platform.
The village of Box is a very short drive away from Grove Lodge (or a healthy hill walk!) and has a post office/newsagent, coffee house, cafe, butchers and mini-supermarket. Box also has a pop-up cinema, the Panache Picture House, which shows at the village hall. Neston Farm shop is a ten minute drive away and has an artisan bakery, delicatessen, organic meat, coffee shop and a play area for children with animals to feed. The pretty medieval town of Corsham is 3 miles away and offers more shopping, places to eat and drink, as well as more to see. The unspoiled National Trust village of Lacock (where Harry Potter, Emma and Pride and Prejudice were filmed, among others) is 8 miles away and an idyllic place to visit with its beautiful Abbey and charming tearooms. A day trip to Castle Combe is also strongly recommended - it was voted the prettiest village in England was also where Spielberg recently filmed 'Warhorse'.
Bath is 5 miles away. A designated World Heritage Site, Bath is one of Britain's most beautiful and historically significant cities with breathtaking Roman, Medieval, Georgian and Victorian architecture - all within walking distance of its imposing cathedral and romantic riverside park.
Bath's appeal is guaranteed to impress the most discerning of visitors; indeed the Royal Crescent, the Circus, Pulteney Bridge and the Pump Room are noted among Britain's finest architectural treasures. The city also offers an incredible range of museums, award winning restaurants, galleries, gardens, theatre and cinema within the city limits.
If you're a golfer, Kingsdown Golf Club, the oldest club in Wiltshire, is only three miles from Grove Lodge - a downland course measuring 6,501 yards and renowned for its beautiful scenery. Green fees are £40.
Bath Golf Club, established in 1880, has one of England's oldest and finest inland courses - green fees are also £40.

On our first trip to England to visit the family of my son-in-law, we were able to book Grove Lodge for our stay shortly after it opened. It was everything we hoped for, and then some. Plenty of room, unbelievable sights of the British countryside, looking down the valley all the way to Bath. No nicer people to deal with than Giles and Fiona; before, during, and after our stay, communication was excellent. Would give my unconditional recommendation to anyone thinking of staying at Grove Lodge; and most certainly will be our first choice to stay if we (hopefully,) make a return trip to the area.

"An amazing place!!"
The Grove Lodge is an amazing property. I stayed there with my husband and my parents. The four of us were very comfortable in the Lodge. It is very spacious, and yet has a wonderfully cozy feeling. The decor is great - very much traditional English countryside charm, combined with modern appliances.
The property, inside and out, is simply beautiful. The view from the private garden/patio is AMAZING! My husband's family lives only a short distance away, but they loved visiting the Lodge so much that it ended up being the "hang out" for most of the week! It was wonderful.
The service we received from the owners, both before and during our stay, was exceptional. They even delivered more wood for the fireplace once we ran out. I travel quite often, and I've never encountered such great service.
I have absolutely zero complaints, though I would say that it would be nice to have another chair or two in the living room area.
We are already talking about going back! Whenever we plan to visit my husband's family in Corsham, we plan to stay at the Grove Lodge if it's available.
We also received a tour of the larger Grove Barn next door, and that place is amazing as well. That could be used for a larger group.
Thank you very much for your kind comments. It was a real pleasure to have such a nice family stay in Grove Lodge. Hope you had a great onward trip to France and we hope to see you all again very soon! G and F.

"Peaceful, comfortable, clean & with magnificent views of Bath"
My partner and young son had a brilliant stay at Grove Lodge, using it as a base to explore Bath, the Bristol coast and nearby villages like Lacock (of "Harry Potter" film fame). The uninterrupted views over rolling fields to Bath are quite magnificent. The lodge is child-friendly, with lots of space inside (and toys/DVDs provided) and out. Luxury bathrooms/showers. Comfy beds. All the mod-cons you'd need in the kitchen. You're surrounded by nature, so it is very quiet. We can't wait to go back next year.
Thank you very much for your kind comments. Hope to see you again very soon! G and F.
