The County Durham region
The Durham Dales is a peaceful and tranquil landscape of moors and hills, valleys and meandering rivers, dotted with picturesque villages and market towns. Part of the North Pennines Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty the Durham Dales truly is a special place and the perfect choice for your next holiday of exploration.
If you would like to look slightly further afield and things to see and do then the historic city of Durham is only 30 minutes away and The Lake District only slightly further at 45 minutes.
Attractions include: Beamish Open Air Museum, Newcastle, Gateshead Metro Centre, Hamsterley Forest., Bowes Museum and too many others to mention.
Swallows Nest is ideally situated to explore all of Barnard Castle and Bishop Auckland. It is situated close to the picturesque village of Cockfield and right on the verge of Cockfield Fell, Britain's largest protected common land area. It was once home to hundreds of miners but is now full of wildlife with curlews, buzzards and the occasional kestrel.
Located close to Hamsterley Forest, part of the Dark Skies initiative, the farm is also cloaked in darkness during the winter evenings. This makes it ideal for stargazing.

Thank you very much for your glowing review of Swallows Nest. We try very hard to make each guest's stay here on the farm as personal and individual as we can and we are thrilled to know that we have achieved this. We agree that your stay here was too short this time as we too would have liked more time to get to know you all better, maybe next time? Thank you once again and good luck to you and your lovely family in the future.

Bless you so much. Keith and I can't thank you enough for coming here and sharing in what we do.
To know that we impart even a small portion of our love for farming and animal husbandry is enough but to find equally minded people is a blessing.
We hope to see you all again soon.
Good luck with the Lego and art projects :-)

"Great play to stay."
Another great stay - as a permanent wheelchair user it is often difficult to find suitable accommodation - Swallows Nest hits the spot and has everything I need for a comfortable stay. Nothing is too much trouble for Alison to sort out if any problem occurs. Lovely farmhouse accommodation in a great area (lots to see and do). Added bonus of being on a working farm.
Thanks so much for your lovely review. We try very hard to ensure that all guests including those with a disability have a super holiday here on the farm. We are very much looking forward to seeing you again very soon. Thanks again. Alison
