The Heart of England/Peak District

Come and take in the breathtaking landscape of the Peak District. You can take a spectacular walk over some of the 500 sq. miles of countryside and National Park, enjoy the rich cultural history of the area in the wonderful Chatsworth House (where Pride and Prejudice was filmed) and the wealth of other stately homes. There are also bustling, bright towns, cosy country pubs and great shopping all around. It is a trip that will be truly magical and compelling with so much to do in this glorious area of the English countryside.

Milldale, is the first welcoming view and entrance to Dovedale looking down the wooded ravine, cross over Viators Bridge to walk down through Dovedale to the stepping stones or north along the quieter stretches of Dovedale. All along the route watch out for dippers, kingfisher or even herons who will be looking for food in the clear waters of the River Dove.

Dovedale is one of the finest examples of a limestone and ash woodland habitat to be found in Europe. What makes the Dovedale landscape truly special is the incredible relationship which sees grassland changing into scrub/woodland and vise versa, creating a rare semi-natural and ancient ash woodland containing remnant true ancient woodland around the crags.

The steppng stones which join the two banks of the River Dove at the Southern end of Dovedale, were originally built by the Victorians due to the ever increasing popularity of the area, to find an easy way to cross the river. They have become one of the most iconic features of Dovedale in this area of outstanding natural beauty.

Fun for adults and children alike, hop from one stone to the next to continue exploring the rest of Dovedale. A little further up from stepping stones are a flight of steps, that were built during the Second World War by Italian prisoners of war, they lead to Lover’s Leap. Climbing this hill is the only way to continue your journey north through Dovedale.

When the river is low the stepping stones can easily be crossed, however after heavy rainfall the stepping stones become difficult to cross. Steep slopes and undulating terrain make this area difficult for visitors with disabilities, however we are constantly upgrading accessibility to ensure that more visitors can enjoy the natural beauty of Dovedale. Accessible parking can be found at Stepping-Stones end of Dovedale..

Ashbourne

The Ashbourne / Alstonefield area

Alstonefield has won the best village award many times in the past. It is a stunning village with a close knit community who are always friendly and willing to help. Alstonefield is actually built on a limestone plateau, which is 900 feet above sea level, making for lovely views. There is a popular old coaching inn just in front of the old wool market, and shops that used to thrive on the silk industry, making silk buttons! It is a wonderful village, with craft shops and galleries to potter about in as well as being the link to the wonderful countryside all around.

A quaint English Hamlet today, Milldale, used to be a bustling and busy hamlet with a Camomile mill that closed in the late 1870’s. The remaining mill buildings have now been converted into our information barn. The ancient packhorse bridge is the most famous of all in the Peak District. It is known as the Viator’s Bridge, and was made famous in the English classic ‘The Compleat Angler’ by Izaak Walton. .

This is a beautiful place to visit with some of the most beautiful British landscape all around you with fine views, walks, cycling and other leisure pursuits to enjoy. The well renowned beauty spots of the “Stepping Stones” and Thorpe Cloud are approached over the viator bridge and then a lovely walk down Dovedale. Nearer to home a bracing walk up the hill to Alstonefield will find the highly rated George Public House and farm shop.

Alton Towers is less than 45 minutes drive.

Milldale is about 7 miles from Ashbourne, 17 miles to Matlock and 20 miles to Derby where there are fast (about 11⁄2 hours) trains to St Pancras International.

"Beautiful cottage!"

We had a wonderful 4 nights in this gorgeous cottage. Vicki was a fantastic hostess and we were delighted to find a welcome hamper with lots of goodies on arrival. The cottage is comfortable, as beautiful as it looks in the photos, lovely and quiet and has everything you could need. The location is amazing - right on the River Dove and beautiful walks from the front door. It was easy to explore the Peak from here with lots of easy drives. Thank you Vicki for such a memorable experience!

"A lovely cottage, comfortable and well equipped in an ideal location"

Just returned from a long weekend at Bankside Cottage – the owners have gone to considerable effort to make this a relaxing and enjoyable venue. The property is very clean and cosy and the fittings and equipment are in good order. Location is in a lovely position in Dovedale providing easy access to the Tissington trail and southern end of the Peak district. We will be going back.

Thank you for your lovely review. Very glad you had a great relaxing weekend. Look forward to you booking again soon.

"Beautiful and relaxing long weekend"

We stayed at Bankside for 3 nights from a Thursday. Bankside is in the heart of the beautiful Milldale, with access to amazing and endless walks on your door step.

The cottage is a great size and perfect for a small families and very dog friendly. My wife and I stayed with our Labrador. The stairs have a gate on to stop any unwanted visits from the dog upstairs. The cottage is packed full of everything you need for a at least a weeks stay.

The owner of the property was very accommodating and was very helpful to make our stay as perfect as possible.

We would definitely stay there again and would recommend Bankside Cottage to anyone.

Great review thank you and come again soon.
