Location description from owner

The Scotland region

This part of the region is the sunniest and the driest area of Scotland, and the mild climate in this sheltered corner of the country makes it a popular year-round holiday destination.

The coastline is punctuated with places of interest, including castles at Tantallon and Dirleton dating back to the 13th century. The area's many other attractions include beaches, historic homes and ancient monuments, good walking and cycling routes, and the best collection of golf courses to be found anywhere.

North Berwick (historically the Biarritz of the North) remains an evolving and popular area for golfers, beach and sea lovers and visitors to Edinburgh. This apartment benefits from being in a simply superb central location.

For those who like exploring our past, the Iron Age sites at Chester's Hill Fort and Traprain Law are worth a visit, and the county's interior is dotted with delightful villages where you can stop for refreshment at the many pubs and coffee shops.

The Bass Rock, 2 km offshore, is home to one of the world's largest gannet colonies and dominates the sea view from North Berwick, whilst Aberlady Bay (the UK's first local nature reserve) hosts thousands of migrating birds each autumn.

Edinburgh is just half an hour away by train. Scotland's capital city offers many attractions, but is at it's busiest for three weeks every August during the Edinburgh International Festival.

Macdonalds Marine Hotel, a popular place for weddings is a mere 10 minute walk away.

North Berwick

The North Berwick area
North Berwick is a thriving coastal town with a long and colourful history. The growth of the 'Royal Burgh' is closely linked to the establishment of the railway line in the late 19th century, a time when North Berwick was a fashionable destination for the well to do in society, and became known as the 'Biarritz of the north'.

These days the town is home to a population of around 7,000 and is one of six main towns in East Lothian. Local infrastructure includes a high school, sports centre and swimming pool, health centre, shops, banks, pubs, restaurants, etc. There are golf, rugby, sailing and tennis clubs, and many other tourist attractions. Excellent transport links mean Edinburgh is easily accessible by road or rail.

Local attractions include Tantallon and Dirleton Castles, the Museum of Flight, Glenkinchie Disitillery, and the Scottish Seabird Centre. Boat trips to the Bass Rock and other islands are available from the old harbour in summer months.

At the heart of Edinburgh's golf coast, North Berwick is home to the West Links, the oldest piece of golfing land outside St Andrews and one of the finest courses to be found anywhere. Muirfield, Gullane, Dunbar, and the new courses at Archerfield and Renaissance are all just a short drive away.

For those who simply want to relax and unwind, there are miles of beautiful sandy beaches, good places to walk or cycle, and friendly pubs Frequent Golf, Tennis and Sailing championships

“Ideal for long weekend and very comfortable”

Reviewed 31 Mar 2016

My wife and I stayed for a long weekend along with her parents. Both bedrooms are spacious with very comfortable super-king beds. Although bathrooms are not en suite to the bedrooms, they are close by and with there being two we had "one each". The couches in the lounge are all comfortable enough to sit around for several hours if the weather is not at its best, as was the case for our stay. Central heating performs very well making the house cosy, but putting the woodburning stove on creates a good atmosphere. We only ate in for breakfast - there are plenty places to eat out within a few minutes walk - so the kitchen didn't get a full test, but it did what we needed it to do. Would happily book again if visiting North Berwick.

Owner's reply: Great to hear this family of 4 people had a lovely stay and enjoyed the space and comfort provided by the apartment. Highlighted were the comfortable beds and spacious sitting room and bathrooms. We look forward to their indicated return and welcoming them back.

“Great apartment in perfect location - fantastic holiday”

Reviewed 1 Jan 2016

We spent Christmas 2015 at Marine Lodge, North Berwick. Having never spent Christmas in a holiday home, we were certainly apprehensive! We could not have been happier. From the great communication and information before our arrival, to the fantastic festive decorations in the house and the generous and thoughtful welcome pack (the kids LOVED their flashing noses!). The house itself is set back from the main shopping street in North Berwick, however it is quiet and has a beautiful entrance. Only one street from the beach it is the perfect location for eveything. The house is grand and spacious, whilst being warm and comfortable. It is decorated and finished to a high spec and the towels and bedding were of a high quality. The kitchen is equipped with everything you need - dishwasher, washing machine etc. and really benefits from a large fridge freezer! Everything was clean and well cared for and we thought it was very good value for the quality and area. We genuinely didn't want to come home. Our after 'sales' service has been great too - returning lost property and making sure we'd had a great holiday. Highly recommend for adults and children alike and would love to return.

Owner's reply: So pleased this family enjoyed a great Christmas holiday at the apartment at Marine Lodge. We try to give enough useful information to all potential customers without being overbearing. So pleased the family enjoyed the Christmas "decorative" touches and children's fun presents ! They highlight :- - the great location - we know this really makes a significant difference. - the space and comfort - the facilities and amenities - the quality furnishings and bedding - the kitchen equipment In short we are so pleased this family had such a great time and enjoyed the accommodation and support and service they received. Always appreciated to hear that they would not only recommend to others but wish to return themselves also.

“Marine Lodge, an outstanding apartment”

Reviewed 13 Dec 2015

This apartment is well appointed and well positioned with regard to the beach, shops and golf course. I have just re-booked for my 3rd stay within two years at this wonderfully spacious apartment, that is how good I think this property is. The owner and the local manager ensure that the property remains in top condition and that guests are well catered for. Book this property and you will not be disappointed.

Owner's reply: Lovely to receive this excellent review. It emphasises:- - the great location - the space - the maintenance What pleases us most is that this customer has rebooked for next year for a third time in two years. Always great to receive guest recommendations to others also.

Marine Lodge is stunning property in a fantastic location. The property offers a warm welcoming and cosy feel. It's extremely well appointed and very clean. North Berwick is a fantastic place for walking, golfing and boasts many eating establishments suiting all pallets. We will definitely return to this property and highly recommend as place to stay.

Owner's reply: Delighted with this review. It highlights the warm & welcoming feeling you wioll enjoy. In addition it emphasises the cleanliness, the amenities and the fantastic location the apartment enjoys, near the sea and town and transport and shops. Always lovely to hear a guest wishing to return.

“Fabulous place in North Berwick”

Reviewed 31 May 2015

Andrew and his team have a wonderful spot at Marine Lodge nestled in the East Lothian hamlet of North Berwick. Two bedrooms and a great room with updated bathrooms and full kitchen, it offers all the amenities needed for a vacation place. Located just a simple 30 min train ride from Edinburgh so you can do the big city and still come home to a restful place. Views of the Firth of Forth from the front offer the relaxing views of the waterfront. Everything in North Berwick is within walking distance from the famous West Links for golfers to the variety of dining (most want reservations so check it out and book early especially if you are eating at Osteria). We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Marine Lodge and highly recommend it to others.

Owner's reply: So grateful of this glowing review from a lovely Taxan family. We appreciate the remarks on our team here to welcome all guests and they highlight the comfort, size and great location for all pursuits and interests. Most grateful that they mention the size of the very sociable sitting room and the appeal of the upgraded modern bathrooms / wet room.

“Superb home from home retreat”

Reviewed 14 May 2015

Great property, perfectly located for beach, golf and local shops and dog friendly. Sea view rooms, spacious bedrooms, great wet-room. Would recommend The Herringbone for lunch and Archerfield Walled Garden a short drive away. This is the second time we have stayed in 7 months. Will definitely be returning later in the year. The worst thing about this property is having to leave :o)

Owner's reply: Great to receive such a glowing review. So pleased this couple wish to return and find it perfect.

“Superior property in an ideal location”

Reviewed 24 Mar 2015

Stunning property in central location with parking. Everything has been thought about to ensure that this an ideal home from home. Quality fixtures and fittings give the apartment a real wow factor.

Owner's reply: We are so pleased that these "relatively local" Scottish visitors had a great time and appreciated the thought and attention given to their comfort and surroundings whilst staying in the apartment. To say the apartment gave them a "wow" factor is always lovely to know. We greatly appreciate their remarks. Thank you.

“Comfortable and relaxing week in North Berwick”

Reviewed 7 Mar 2015

The apartment was very convenient for North Berwick shops, beaches and train to Edinburgh. Good views, parking, very clean, comfortable and relaxing. Log fire. Thanks to Gordon for welcoming us and to Andrew for being so helpful with recommendations etc., and thoughtful - loved the daffodils and the shortbread. Wouldn't hesitate to recommend to family or friends. Lots of good walking locally, both short and long. Dirleton and Tantallon Castle very interesting and Scottish Seabird Centre also worth a visit. Tour of Royal Yacht Brittania in Edinburgh (Leith) was very good, including delicious tea and scones. Would also recommend a visit to see The Kelpies and Falkirk wheel (about 1h 20 min drive).

Owner's reply: We are delighted this guest liked the apartment so much and in particular found it:- - clean and comfortable - great location - enjoyed the welcome and facilities. - the proximity to train routes - the views - the fire - the parking facility. We would be so pleased to welcome them again and appreciate their recommending it to friends.

“Just what I was looking for.”

Reviewed 15 Jan 2015

We saw this house online and thought it looked ideal. It was perfect! The decor was wonderful and the house was clean, comfortable and very welcoming. We were met by Gordon who had heated the house for our arrival. He was very informative about our surroundings and recommended good places to eat and drink. Despite the freezing cold weather we spent a lovely weekend in North Berwick. We would love to come back sometime.

Owner's reply: A lovely review for the start of 2015 for which we are most grateful. We maintain and reinvest regularly and we are so pleased this family found the apartment ideal, well decorated and comfortable with all the facilities they needed. We are so pleased they successfully lit the fire ! We look forward to the opportunity of welcoming them again in future.
